Bavarian engineers are faced with a dilemma: How to offer consistent acceleration when there are no speed limits. What it comes down to is making the differential gears taller, or spacing the transmission’s gear ratios further apart. Both these changes hurt acceleration down low, trading it for passing power above 100 mph. With the release of the M3 and M4 xDrive, we see that BMW M does it the old-fashioned way.
The one consistent cure for sluggish launches is more power. Because the BMW straight six gives three cylinders their own turbo, turning up the boost is easy. Lesser cars like the Corvette and Porsche simply added a 7th gear, but BMW’s 6-speed gearbox is indestructible, and it easily handles 510 horsepower.
