A century has passed since the introduction of one of Bugatti’s most iconic creations.
Bugatti is known for having a rich and long history of exemplifying the highest degree of automotive excellence, both in the modern era and over a century in the past. In fact, one of Bugatti’s most well-known automotive masterpieces is celebrating its centenary this year: the Type 35. Even 100 years ago, the Type 35 did many of the same things that Bugatti’s modern cars do today: pushing boundaries, breaking rules, and setting new standards.
100 years ago in 1924, the Type 35 debuted, showcasing the genius of Ettore Bugatti, an untrained engineer, as the world’s first purpose-built race car. It featured alloy wheels unlike the wire wheels of its contemporaries, along with a rear suspension that remained within the body rather than being exposed. The design was aerodynamic and lightweight, and with an 89-horsepower 2.3-liter supercharged inline-8 engine, it was quick, delivering a driving experience that no other car at the time was capable of delivering.
After a century, the Type 35 remains one of the most important cars in Bugatti’s long and incredible story, along with legendary cars like the Atlantic and the Royale. Today, Bugatti’s futuristic hypercars continue to change the automotive world, and are inspired by the century-old creations that did the same in their time, like the Type 35 and many other masterpieces from Bugatti.
