Monterey Car Week may now be over, but thanks to an announcement from Mecum Auctions during the event, we now have something to look forward to in the near future. That announcement was the fact that Mecum will be auctioning off the iconic and legendary 1970 Porsche 917K hero car from the movie Le Mans. Yes, the same one that the man himself, Steve McQueen, drove.
This 917K was originally purchased by McQueen, who used it in the movie he produced. Additionally, McQueen went on to race the car for real and scored multiple victories behind the wheel. The purchase of this vehicle comes with a complete and known ownership history that is unlike any other vehicle out there. This is a true one-of-a-kind vehicle that will undoubtedly fetch a hammer price that signifies that.
For this auction to happen, the 917K came out of a meticulous restoration that brought it back to the 1970 specifications featured in the Le Mans movie.
