RM Sotheby’s, the world’s largest collector car auction house for investment-quality automobiles, is set to take New York City by storm next month with their creatively-styled Driven by Disruption auction, December 10.
The upcoming event follows in the footsteps of the company’s blockbuster 2013 New York sale, the first major collector car auction to hit the city in over a decade. Held at Sotheby’s Manhattan headquarters, that event set a new standard for the industry in terms of its quality and presentation, generating an outstanding $63 million in sales during just two hours of bidding. The upcoming 2015 event, which will again be held at Sotheby’s New York, is set to amplify those results and from a quick look at the catalog, is certainly shaping up as the star auction of the holiday season, if not 2015.
As with all RM events, the emphasis is very much on quality over quantity; the catalog features just 31 motor cars, each carefully handpicked by RM specialists to showcase the extremes of motoring history and the molds that were broken by engineers and designers in pushing the automotive envelope. The cars perfectly fit the sale’s theme, each ‘disruptive’ in their own way, whether for their genre, styling or engineering.
“Whether it be a stunningly beautiful coachbuilt automobile, a wild, untraditional design, or a marvel of high performance engineering, the auction features cars that break with the conventional morals of car design and production,” describes Ian Kelleher, Managing Director, RM Sotheby’s West Coast Division. In linking to the event’s December date, Kelleher adds, “We are delighted to showcase this exhibit during a time in New York that is truly magical.”
The motor car offering spans more than 70 years of innovative styling and engineering. Among key attractions are the cutting-edge 2006 Lamborghini Concept S (Estimate: $2.4-3 million); the incredibly rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Sportabteilung’ Gullwing, driven by Sir Stirling Moss to an impressive second overall at the 1956 Tour de France (Estimate: $5-7 million); and the ex-works 1956 Ferrari 290 MM, built for and piloted by the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio. The latter, estimated by RM to bring more than $28 million, is one of the most desirable and valuable cars to ever come to auction.

The automobiles will be complemented by a select range of memorabilia. From pint-sized children’s cars to automotive paintings, posters, sculptures and intricate engine models, this group also keeps with the event’s creative theme, with many of the collectibles on offer representing significant disruptions to automotive history in scale form.
Combined, the vehicles and memorabilia will no doubt create an automotive display the likes of which New York City has never before seen.
