Ferrari LaFerrari Specs & Review

Ferrari once again produces an iconic, praise-worthy automobile that beckons any enthusiast its way. Not only is the LaFerrari one of the highest performance road cars Ferrari has ever produced, but it couples its 6.3-liter V12 with a 161 horsepower hybrid system. With a combined 949 horsepower and over 663 pound-feet of torque, the 2016 Ferrari LaFerrari combines its cutting-edge engineering with efficiency, power, and stunning design. Driving a LaFerrari is an experience unto itself. If the high-voltage battery is charged, it will shut down the V12 under light load. Manually shifting the 7-speed transmission offers instant gratification, but shifting isn’t really necessary. That’s because this car makes power in any gear at any rpm. A machine designed to take the tarmac wherever it goes and at whatever particular pace, the batteries even recharge under braking, making track day all the more tempting. Innovation, engineering, and ingenuity are all packed into the LaFerrari in incredible concentrations and one of the most important things about the LaFerrari is the fact that it heralded a future for supercars and the entire automotive industry that is faster, more efficient, better for the environment, and more exciting for drivers.

Ferrari LaFerrari Engine

To build an efficient hypercar, the Ferrari LaFerrari utilizes a battery and two electric motor/generators. No less than 120 individual battery cells are packed into 8 modules. This allows them to be as close as possible to the center of gravity. Instead of alternating current, Ferrari chose the more advanced path of DC-DC. Each motor is pulse width modulated so it doesn’t require a heavy inverter. It offers 161 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque at any speed, and under light acceleration, it borrows some of the V12 power to keep itself charged. When you need to make an exit, the LaFerrari horsepower combining the V12 and electric motor system is 949, not to mention you have 663 lb-ft of torque to go with it. The technology used in the LaFerrari engine is straight out of Formula 1, and it is known as Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

Ferrari LaFerrari Brakes

I wouldn’t trust my life to anything less than Brembo brakes. That is because the Ferrari LaFerrari demands the world’s best stopping system. Carbon-ceramic rotors should probably last the life of the car. Fronts measure in at 15.6″ with 14.9 on the rear. They have the ability to stop a freight train, but in normal driving, the electric motors instantly turn into generators by clamping down on the engine and transmission. Regenerative braking transforms the car’s kinetic energy into voltage and sends it to the batteries. Sure hybrids are good for the environment, but none has ever done it so gracefully before.

Ferrari LaFerrari Interior

Every aspect of the Ferrari LaFerrari might be optimized for performance, but the interior is actually quite comfortable. Down to the very last detail, it has been carefully sculpted. If it was not obvious from the exterior, the interior has an immense amount of F1 influence, including the steering wheel shape, the locations of controls and pedal design. There is even a toggle between tachometer visuals for either a relaxed or a more competitive display. The LaFerrari is genius, unique and timeless. A central spine of carbon fiber divides the seats, and rear visibility is better than other hypercars. Controls are well thought out, and the seating position is optimal.

Ferrari LaFerrari Transmission

Because it has such a unique drivetrain, the Ferrari LaFerrari needs a potent transmission. The unique gearbox is based on their 7-speed F1 dual-clutch automatic. It has the 6.3 liter V12 on one side, and the primary motor/generator on the others. A common input shaft allows each to work together with the axles placed near the center of the case. Anyone who is still whining about a stick shift should realize that a manual transmission can’t handle this level of power. Mounted atop the gearbox are the high-voltage controllers. They distribute power between the batteries and both electric motors, so they are placed to get maximum cooling.

Ferrari LaFerrari Price – How much is a LaFerrari?

The LaFerrari MSRP is a complicated question to answer. That’s because Ferrari doesn’t sell an exquisite flagship hypercar like the LaFerrari to just anybody, and instead chooses to reserve it for exclusive clients that they deem fit for it. In order to be eligible to buy a new LaFerrari, you have to plead your case to Maranello. Those who were on the list were happy to transfer the $1.5 Million price to their dealer. That was for a base model because you know Ferrari loves optional content. Many examples were delivered with telemetry, carbon fiber mirrors, sports exhaust, and Daytona seats. The issue in the pre-owned market is that the options seem to be irrelevant. USA prices for all LaFerraris have nearly tripled and the market shows no signs of slowing. If your heart is truly set on a LaFerrari, prepare to shell out millions for your dream car.

Ferrari LaFerrari Standout Features

The result is performance levels unmatched by any other Ferrari as confirmed by a lap time at Fiorano of one minute and 20 seconds. That’s five seconds faster than the Enzo and three seconds faster than the F12 Berlinetta, making the Ferrari LaFerrari specs the fastest road car in the Italian brand’s history. Other notable performance statistics include the LaFerrari 0-60 that takes under two seconds to achieve, 0-124 in fewer than seven seconds and the LaFerrari top speed is in excess of 217 mph. The LaFerrari is a true flagship car for Ferrari, and like the Enzo, F50, and F40 of decades past, the LaFerrari represents the absolute best that the brand has to offer in terms of stunning design, captivating driving ability, and shocking performance. The LaFerrari is an incredibly unique car among Ferrari’s lineup, let alone among the other cars on the road today.
