The successor to the legendary LaFerrari is finally here.
The Ferrari LaFerrari, part of the incredible early 2010s hybrid hypercar “Holy Trinity,” is part of Ferrari’s time-honored “Big Five” and one of the greatest pioneering supercars the manufacturer has ever made. Now, it has a successor: the new Ferrari F80. The new hybrid hypercar is Ferrari’s new ultra-exclusive flagship, poised to be another milestone in the manufacturer’s rich history of over 75 years creating race cars and high-performance machines.
The new Ferrari F80 is a bold evolution of Ferrari’s approach to performance, taking after the pioneering 296 GTB by adopting a V6 hybrid powertrain. The engine is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6, which is paired with an electric front axle and an electric motor, as well as electric motors assisting the turbochargers. The engine itself produces an incredible 900 horsepower, with an incredible 300 horsepower per liter, thanks to components and solutions derived directly from Ferrari’s two-time Le Mans-winning 499P hypercar.
The electric motor in the new Ferrari F80 is the first to be entirely developed, tested, and manufactured by Ferrari itself, and along with the engine, the Ferrari F80 boasts a total of 1,200 horsepower, which makes it the most powerful roadgoing Ferrari ever. With up to more than a ton of total downforce, that power gets put down in the most optimized way possible. Thanks to its V6 hybrid powertrain sending power to all four wheels and painstaking motorsport-inspired engineering, the F80 manages to tip the scales at just 3362 pounds dry.
With completely independent suspension, a bespoke braking system designed in collaboration with Brembo, and painfully innovative active aero, with technologies derived from Formula 1 and the WEC, including a rear wing that changes its height and angle continuously to optimize performance at all times, the F80 is at the cutting edge of performance engineering. It will reach a top speed of 217 mph, getting from 0-60 in a blistering 2.15 seconds.
The design of the F80 is the most futuristic interpretation of Ferrari’s new design language yet, with features inspired by the car’s historic predecessor, the F40, and a two-tone look achieved with the use of exposed carbon fiber throughout. The dramatic differences in the appearance of the rear wing give the car radically different looks when it is stowed compared to when it is deployed, as well.
Meanwhile, the interior adopts a “1+” configuration, centering everything important around the driver and adopting a minimalistic approach for passenger accommodations. The seats are two different colors, making the passenger seat virtually invisible when it’s not in use. The seats are set at a slight bias, as well, with the passenger seat slightly rearward from the driver, allowing for a narrower interior space without compromising comfort and ergonomics.
The steering wheel was developed specifically for the new F80, forgoing Ferrari’s haptic controls for easier-to-use buttons for on-track precision. With its captivating new design, innovations at the bleeding edge of performance and a new V6 hybrid powertrain brought straight from the pinnacle of motorsport, the new Ferrari F80 is the latest ultimate expression of Ferrari performance.
