In a groundbreaking collaboration with Wykes Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has set the wheels in motion on an exciting new venture in renewable energy. Using second-life Jaguar I-PACE batteries, the company plans to develop one of the largest energy storage systems in the UK, capable of harnessing both solar and wind power.

JLR’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will utilize 30 second-life I-PACE batteries, storing up to 2.5MWh of energy at full capacity. Enough to power around 250 homes for a day, the initiative is a step towards decarbonizing the National Grid and managing peaks in energy demand.

One of the standout features of the project is the second-life use of I-PACE batteries, taken from prototype and engineering test vehicles. By the end of 2023, JLR aims to store a total of 7.5MWh of energy, sufficient to power 750 homes for a day. What’s more, the plan includes the creation of additional containers for second-life batteries removed from used production vehicles in the future.

The BESS, linked to an advanced inverter for optimal efficiency and energy management, will provide power directly to the National Grid during peak hours. Conversely, it can draw power from the grid during off-peak hours, storing it for future use.

This innovative approach to energy storage is key to advancing the UK’s green energy goals. By dealing with rapid peaks in demand and maximizing the use of renewable energy sources, JLR’s initiative contributes significantly to reducing the carbon footprint of the National Grid.

In collaboration with Wykes Engineering, JLR has achieved seamless integration, with no additional manufacturing steps or removal of battery modules required. This ensures that the sustainability of the project is kept at the forefront.

The collaboration also represents a vital progression in JLR’s commitment to the circular economy principles. By focusing on the “Use Less, Use Longer, Use Again” philosophy, the partnership supports JLR’s drive to achieve carbon net zero by 2039 across its supply chain, products, and operations under its Reimagine strategy.

Looking towards the future, second-life battery supply for stationary applications like renewable energy storage could surpass 200 gigawatt-hours per year by 2030, creating a global value over $30 billion. As part of this trend, JLR’s batteries, engineered to the highest standards, are ideally suited for deployment in low-energy situations. Once the batteries fall below the required level for these second-life uses, JLR will recycle them, ensuring that raw materials can be recovered for reuse in a true circular economy model.

By repurposing second-life I-PACE batteries, JLR is not only driving innovation in renewable energy storage but also demonstrating an exemplary commitment to the circular economy and environmental stewardship. This partnership is sure to set a precedent for future collaboration and innovation within the automotive and renewable energy sectors.
