The Italian brand synonymous with luxury and high performance, Maserati, recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of its iconic GranTurismo at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca during the revered Monterey Car Week. In collaboration with Sotheby’s, the historic parade lap at the famous track became a reflection point, focusing not just on Maserati’s glorious past but also showcasing its exciting present and promising future.
Marking its inception in 1947 with the Maserati A6 1500, the GranTurismo quickly turned into an icon that epitomized a blend of racing engine power with the opulence of a hand-crafted luxury car. The very concept of GranTurismo was birthed from this marriage of high performance and luxury, laying the foundation for all subsequent models under the Trident brand.
This celebration was more than just a nostalgic look back; it was also the stage for the triumphant unveiling of the all-new 2024 Maserati GranTurismo. The latest iteration carries forward the legacy of its predecessors by marrying high performance typical of a Maserati supercar with features engineered for comfort on long-distance journeys. What sets this generation apart is its inclusion of a plethora of innovative technologies and comfort-driven solutions to keep drivers in touch and engaged during any trip.
The 2024 GranTurismo comes in two distinct internal combustion variants. Both are powered by the revolutionary MC20-derived V6 Nettuno engine. The Modena features a 490-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 Twin Turbo, while the high-performance Trofeo version boasts a power output of 550 horsepower. In a progressive step forward, the GranTurismo Folgore model takes the innovation to the next level, adopting a 100% battery electric-based powertrain. This variant marks Maserati’s first fully electric production vehicle under the “Folgore” sub-brand and features an 800-volt technology system, utilizing technical solutions derived from Maserati’s Formula E racing pursuits.
Among those honoring GranTurismo’s return at Laguna Seca were Maserati’s leadership, including Maserati Americas CEO Bill Peffer, and Andy Goldberg, SVP, head of collectible cars at Sotheby’s Financial Services. Attendees had the unique opportunity to mingle with fellow Maserati enthusiasts, experience some of the brand’s rarest vehicles, and get an up-close glimpse of the latest models.
Bill Peffer aptly summed up the sentiment of the event, stating, “MC20 may be our Halo, but GranTurismo has been and will remain our Icon. Our 75th Anniversary Celebration Event greatly exceeded our expectations. We were moved to see such enthusiastic participation from owners, loyalists, and enthusiasts.” He further emphasized the brand’s forward momentum with the all-new 2024 GranTurismo, calling it a testament to Maserati’s enduring legacy.
The event concluded with a memorable time-capsule moment, captured in a group photo lineup on the raceway’s famous Corkscrew. The celebration was more than a historical milestone; it was a symbol of Maserati’s continuous drive towards innovation, performance, and luxury, encapsulating 75 years of excellence in a single, unforgettable day.
