At the heart of Munich, Mercedes-Benz Group AG CEO Ola Källenius pulled the curtain back on the future of automotive innovation at the Mercedes-Benz Pavilion during IAA Mobility 2023. Highlighting the event was the debut of the Concept CLA Class, an EV that sets the standard for the company’s electric ambitions with a staggering 466-mile range, new operating system MB.OS, and revolutionary sustainability features. Built on the new Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), this concept car is the forerunner to an entirely new family of electric models.
From advancements in electric drivetrain technology to the introduction of the all-new MB.OS operating system, the Concept CLA Class positions itself as a game-changer. Remarkably, it boasts an energy consumption rate of around 12 kWh/62 miles, making it a “one-liter car” for the electric era. Aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s Ambition 2039, the MMA platform represents a sustainable future.
The automaker also showcased the world premiere of the E-Class All-Terrain, a versatile variant featuring 4MATIC all-wheel drive and air suspension as standard. Engineered for diverse terrains, it’s an emblem of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to combining aesthetics and functionality. Also debuting was the all-electric EQB, reflecting the brand’s evolving luxury strategy with enhanced design details and intelligent driver-assistance systems. Further amplifying their tech credentials, Mercedes-Benz announced an extensive package of over-the-air (OTA) updates. These will include features like Dolby Atmos and NewsFlash voice features, among others, set to roll out in September 2023.
Stepping into the realm of infrastructure, the automaker is doubling down on its global charging network. The first hubs are expected to launch in Atlanta, Chengdu, and Mannheim in fall 2023, with plans to expand to over 2,000 high-power charging points by 2024 and more than 10,000 by the end of the decade. Mercedes-Benz’s multi-faceted approach at IAA Mobility 2023 clearly demonstrates its intent to define luxury in the electric age.
