Nobody really expected them to stuff a twin turbo V12 into the G Wagen, so the world embraced the monster SUV. It’s not the price of fuel that makes them hard to build. It’s the ever-tightening taxes and emissions laws. Many countries tax their citizens based on engine size, and our own CAFE standards are aimed at killing the fun for everyone.
So the G550 will live on with the same 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 shared with the other AMG products, and the G65 will become a hot ticket for Mercedes fans. They better act fast, because only 65 examples of the Final Edition are planned. They will be easily identified by unique 21″ bronze wheels, and bronze trim details inside and out. The G65 is going out on top, with 621 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque.
