A true Porsche racing expert tries his hand at the electric racing future.
Klaus Bachler is more than familiar with Porsche race cars, racing 25 weekends each year behind the wheel of a Porsche. However, a slight departure from his usual racing experience is his role as a development driver for the Porsche GT4 e-Performance, Porsche’s bold foray into electric race cars, and his review thus far of the pioneering racing machine is glowing.
With 1,073 horsepower, the GT4 e-Performance is able to sprint from 0-60 in under 2.3 seconds, getting to 120 mph in less than 5.6 seconds. In addition, courtesy of being electric, torque delivery is near instantaneous and the car is incredibly responsive. With all-wheel drive, it’s a truly formidable performance machine.
The GT4 e-Performance is versatile, allowing the driver to decide between going all-out with max power for a timed lap, or modulating the power to conserve battery capacity for a longer race. The question, however, remains as to how these cars will be raced. The prototype hasn’t had the chance to race against another one, but when more are made, hopefully the car can eventually be part of something like a one-make series, or participate in hill climb events.
Whatever the future of the Porsche GT4 e-Performance, and electric race cars in general is, the incredibly futuristic and innovative race car is bound to change the motorsport world. And Klaus Bachler has been behind the wheel to attest to exactly that.
