The sale reunited members of the original Cars team who created both the car in the Disney and Pixar film and the life-size Sally Carrera.
As we conclude Monterey Car Week 2022 and all of its happenings, the auction stage seemed to be the highlight of the week for luxury auction houses like RM Sotheby’s. Drawing attention as one of the main attractions was The Porsche 911 Sally Special, a commemorative one-of-one build in honor of the 20th anniversary of the motion picture Cars. The Disney and Pixar series began in 2022 with the first appearance of Sally Carrera, originally based on the 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera. Today, the life-size Sally Carrera replica takes shape as a 992 generation Porsche 911 Carrera with subtle hints that direct its design to the automotive-inspired film.
Along with the one-off Porsche 911 example, the auction listing came with a custom Porsche Design Chronograph made specifically to match the configuration of the Sally Carrera spec. An array of smaller items also accompanied the car and watch, including a second set of wheels presented in a bespoke rack, a fitted “Sally Special” car cover, and a book charting the creation of the car from beginning to end. The book itself holds the original sketches from both Porsche and Pixar. The exciting RM Sotheby’s auction for the Porsche 911 Sally Special ended on Saturday evening with the winning bid of $3.6 million (auction hammer price) coming from a telephone bidder. The price was a record for a new Porsche sold at auction, according to the auction house. The entire proceeds of the sale go on to benefit Girls Inc. and USA for UNHCR, helping to inspire all girls and to provide urgent help to nearly 6.2 million refugees.
