When we set out to create our first Formula One car, the RA271, our engineers designed something that could only have been brought to life by dreamers. Constructed entirely by Honda, the car housed a revolutionary 1.5-liter V-12 engine. At the time, this was surprising, as V-8s dominated the paddock. The V-12 would be one of many things that led us to victory during the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix.
After a series of challenges with the RA271, our upgraded car, the RA272, paved the way to a new era of F1 racing. With Richie Ginther behind the wheel, our 1965 Mexican GP victory marked the first win by a Japanese team and automobile. The win would also mark the first of many victories to date for Honda.
