With more documentation than any other Dino that we have encountered, this is the standard to which all others are judged. Winning two preservation awards from Ferrari Club of America, this 246 GTS is still wearing its original paint. Enzo wanted a less expensive brand that did not cheapen the image of Ferrari, so the Dino was envisioned as a nimble rear engined V6 for buyers who couldn’t afford their twelve-cylinder models. Finding a decent example is becoming hard to do, because many were daily driven and abused on the track.

The first production cars were powered by a 2.0L V6, known as the 206. But for the discerning buyer who needed more performance, it was redesigned for 1969. With a longer wheelbase and a larger engine, the 246 GT offered better handling and more horsepower than its predecessor. The rarest versions of these were the Targa roof (Spider) 246 GTS. Only 1,274 examples were produced, and this one has been cared for by the same family since new. Regarded as a time capsule by Dino enthusiasts it was used as a reference for the book Dino Compendium by Mattias Barth.
Originally purchased by Dr. John Kenny of Green Bay, it has only amassed 13,600 miles since new. The original tools, spare tire, and jack are included along with a history report by Marcel Massini. It states that aside from normal service in 1974 and again in ’76, it was last registered in 1984. The owner’s manual and a rare factory service manual along are included with all records.
Recently serviced, this is your opportunity to own a well preserved 1972 GTS. Built in May of ’72, it is one of the earliest examples to be produced. The past 44 years have been kind to this car, and it deserves to be the centerpiece of your collection. It will be offered as lot S98 at Mecum’s Monterey Auction next weekend. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by, as you will never find another GTS in this condition.
