Dutch-born Arthur Benjamins carefully built up his unique automotive art reputation in the 1980’s UK where he lived for many years and from where his foray into motoring and aviation art began. Using photo-realism which had not been used by previous motoring artists, within a few years his name became synonymous with his unique style. Flatteringly, to this day it continues to spawn many imitative painters.
His first one-man 1979 London show created an immediate interest and helped to introduce Benjamins to audiences in his newly adopted country. It was especially challenging, as opposed to the art education of the majority of eminent artists, Benjamins is one of the few who have broken the mold by being self-taught which allowed him undiluted and raw access to the self-discovery of his talents and directions in which to travel. Helping him on that path were countless articles in European motoring and boating publications, and British television. During that time, he met the many subjects of his Formula-1 paintings, the drivers, sponsors, team managers, and team owners of many became commissioning clients.
His powerfully colorful work mirrors the technicolor brutality of modern automobile racing, his deep love for engineering ensuring that all technical and visual details are uncompromisingly correct which is also one of the main factors of his work’s value.
His range of works embraces portraits of musicians, actors, politicians, artists, and racing drivers.
In the 10+ years he has lived in the USA, his automotive work especially, is moving quickly into the hearts, minds, and collections of a great many Americans.
Benjamins is the instigator of a new movement, “Abstract Iconography” and has revived “Neoplasticism” – a movement which has lain dormant since 1944.
