McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. One-Off Breadvan-Inspired Ferrari 599 Shooting Brake Heads to Auction

A one-off Ferrari shooting brake built by Dutch coachbuilder Niels van Roij Design will be offered at the upcoming Broad Arrow's Zoute Concours Auction on October 9, 2026, carrying a pre-sale estimate of 450,000 to 650,000 euros, or roughly $520,000 to $750,000. The car debuted at Woodcote Park in July and was built as a tribute to a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona shooting brake commissioned through Chinetti Motors. The 1972 car was created for client Bob Gittleman by Luigi "Coco" Chinetti Jr. and designer Gene Garfinkle, using 365 GTB/4 Daytona chassis 15275. Panther Westwinds of Surrey was responsible for the stunning aluminum bodywork, retaining the windscreen, A-pillars and doors. Two glass wings hinged at the roof replaced the conventional tailgate, and the instruments were relocated to the center of the dashboard. The design draws on the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan, built in 1962 by engineer Giotto Bizzarrini for Count Giovanni Volpi after Enzo Ferrari canceled Volpi's order for two 250 GTOs. Niels van Roij Design has produced coachbuilt vehicles since 2018, including a Tesla Model S shooting brake, the Rolls-Royce Silver Spectre, now owned by three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti, and a Breadvan Hommage based on a Ferrari 550 Maranello. Under the hood, the naturally aspirated V12 remains largely standard in its original specification. The project required approximately 15,000 hours, with every exterior panel except the doors newly hand-formed in aluminum. Electrically operated butterfly side windows open the luggage compartment while the rear glass remains fixed. Full-width front lighting reinterprets the amber graphic of the 1972 car, and four exhaust outlets sit within a carbon-fiber diffuser. The cabin and luggage bay are trimmed in cognac leather, with carbon fiber in place of the original's walnut, and the instrument binnacle is centrally mounted. Broad Arrow | The Quail Auction 2026: Top 10 Results and Highlights

Broad Arrow’s two-day Quail Lodge Auction during Monterey Car Week 2026 generated $97 million in total sales at an 85 percent sell-through rate, making it Broad Arrow’s highest-grossing Monterey Car Week to date. 189 lots were presented between August 13 and 14, with the docket spanning modern hypercars, limited-production supercars, historic European icons and more. The inaugural sale as the official auction partner of The Quail by The Peninsula, A Motorsports Gathering, drew more than 1,400 registered bidders and produced nine world-record auction results. Two models, a Ferrari Enzo and a Bugatti W16 Mistral, simultaneously crossed the block at Broad Arrow’s Quail Lodge Auction and subsequently at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction, creating one of the clearest cross-platform pricing comparisons Monterey 2026 has produced. A 2003 Ferrari Enzo led Broad Arrow’s sale at $10,675,000 including Buyer’s premium, closing in line with its pre-auction estimate of $9,000,000 to $11,000,000. As previewed by duPont REGISTRY ahead of the auction in 10 Collector Cars Set to Headline Monterey Car Week 2026 Auctions, this example stood out with its Nero D.S. over Rosso leather specification, Ferrari Classiche certification completed in 2026, and documented single-family ownership history since delivery. Just hours later, another Rosso Corsa Enzo appeared at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction, where it sold for $9,410,000 including Buyer’s Premium. We will bring you more details about that sale in our RM recap, but the Broad Arrow result exceeds it by $1,265,000, or 13.4 percent. The result builds on the momentum highlighted in our Ferrari Enzo market spotlight, where we’ve examined the model’s transition into the eight-figure segment. We also got two data points for the Bugatti Mistral, the open-top roadster that represents the swan song for the French marque’s quad-turbo 8.0 W16-Piech era. A 2025 Bugatti W16 Mistral finished in Matt Argent/Black Carbon over a Beluga Black and Tangerine interior and with 652 miles achieved $8,805,000. One of 99 examples produced and originally priced at approximately $5.3 million, the Broad Arrow result represents a 1.66x multiple over the original sticker. RM Sotheby’s also offered a Mistral from The Driver’s Philosophy Collection, with that example selling for $8,310,000. Taking third spot was a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400 S from the Apex Collection, which crossed the block at $4,075,000, closing above its high estimate of $3,600,000. Finished in Azzurro Mexico Metallizzato and showing just 48,70 miles, the result reinforces the continued strength of Lamborghini’s first true supercar, a model celebrating 60 years in 2026. The S specification, with improved carburetion, a strengthened gearbox and increased power over the original P400, remains one of the most desirable versions within the Miura hierarchy, with just 338 units produced. Back to modern exotics and a 2017 Ferrari F12tdf followed at $3,635,000. One of just 799 examples made, this two-owner example shows 1,060 miles from new and is finished in Bianco Italia over white leather/Nero Alcantara interior. A 2011 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, one of just 150 examples produced and finished in White over a saddle brown Nappa leather interior, achieved $3,305,000, followed by a German market 1988 Porsche 959 Komfort, one of only 34 examples finished in Graphite Metallic at $2,865,000. Both models remain among the most significant supercars of their respective generations, combining technological innovation with strong collector recognition. American hypercars also performed strongly, with two Hennessey Venom F5 variants placing among the auction’s top results. A 2023 Venom F5 Revolution Coupe achieved $2,837,500, while a 2023 Venom F5 Roadster finished in Banner Green with 681 miles from the Collector’s Reserve and the fifth of 30 F5 Roadsters produced reached $2,425,000, demonstrating increasing acceptance of low-production American hypercars among collectors competing at the highest levels. A 2015 Ferrari 458 Speciale A also achieved $2,425,000. One of just 499 units made, this U.S. market example finished in Bianco Avus with Nero and Argento racing stripes reflects continued interest in Ferrari’s final naturally aspirated V8 convertible special series model. Broad Arrow’s finalized Top 10 also includes a 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, which was sold after the auction for an undisclosed amount, replacing the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster that appeared in our preliminary results. Broad Arrow Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este Auction 2026: Top 10 Results and Highlights

Broad Arrow's second annual Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este Auction ran May 16 and 17 at Villa Erba on the glistening shores of Lago di Como in Northern Italy, presenting a diverse docket with 78 lots comprising everything from classics to modern exotics, across two sessions. The sale achieved 40.8 million euros ($47.4 million) in total sales at an 87 percent sell-through rate, with more than 12,000 collectors watching remotely. The weekend itself was one of the collector car calendar's most charged, with BMW AG being the official auction partner of the prestigious event. The catalog included more than 20 Ferrari models spanning 1956 to 2024, alongside some truly exquisite automobiles from Pagani, Lamborghini, Porsche, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, and a five-car collection of Nissan Skyline R34 GT-Rs offered to European collectors for the first time at this level of competition. As seen at Mecum INDY this past weekend, it was Ferrari that was the top-seller at Villa d'Este as well, more specifically, a low-mileage 2023 Ferrari Daytona SP3 from the Italian marque's famed limited-run Icona Series, settled at 6,250,000 euros ($7.27 million), against a pre-sale estimate of 6,500,000 to 8,500,000 euros ($7.55 million to $9.87 million). Yet another example from the Icona Series, a 2020 Ferrari Monza SP2, estimated at 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 euros ($2.90 million to $3.48 million), sold before the auction at an undisclosed price per Broad Arrow's official results. Taking third spot was Saturday evening's standout sale, which was a 1990 Ferrari F40. This European-specification non-cat example with matching numbers throughout realized 2,931,250 euros ($3.40 million) against a pre-sale estimate of 2,300,000 to 2,500,000 euros ($2.67 million to $2.90 million). It was the only lot in the top five to exceed its pre-auction estimate and drove the most competitive bidding of the weekend. The result is consistent with the upward trajectory of 2026 F40 pricing against a median of $2,150,000 and a duPont REGISTRY Index (dRi) value of $3,141,012. The Holy-Trinity hybrid hypercars are truly on the uptick, as seen with the record-setting sale of the LaFerrari $8,580,000 at Mecum Indy last week. Against that result, the Porsche 918 Spyder market is following a similar path. A 2015 918 Spyder Weissach fetched €2,256,250 ($2.62 million) close to the model’s dRi of $2,782,500. A 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS delivered the sale's cleanest result relative to its estimated range of 1,500,000 to 1,700,000 euros, realizing 1,918,750 euros ($2.23 million) at the top of that range. A 2022 Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4, one of five in Luci del Bosco and estimated at 1,750,000 to 2,000,000 euros, realized 1,581,250 euros ($1.84 million), just below the low estimate. The sharpest shortfall came from the 1929 Bugatti Type 43 Roadster by Eugene Matthys, which carried a pre-auction estimate of 2,500,000 to 3,500,000 euros ($2.90 million to $4.06 million), and realized 1,007,500 euros ($1.17 million), less than a third of the low estimate. Rounding out the top 10 was a 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Boano Alloy Coupe at €911,875 ($1.06 million). The aforementioned five-car Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R collection, all offered without reserve, confirmed a growing interest in JDM cars among European collectors. The rarest of the five, a 2002 GT-R CRS by Nismo, one of fewer than 20 to receive the full Club Sport Race-spec conversion at Nismo's Omori factory, led the group at 467,500 euros ($543,000). The headline lot, a 2018 Pagani Zonda 760 Unica Roadster, estimated at 9,500,000 to 12,000,000 euros ($11.03 million to $13.94 million), drew bidding to 7,975,000 euros ($9.25 million) before the lot passed. The gap between the highest bid and the low estimate tells the story clearly. Broad Arrow The Porsche Air|Water Auction 2026: Top 10 Results and Highlights

Broad Arrow's third annual Porsche Air|Water Auction concluded on Saturday at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa, California. Auctioneer Thomas Forester ran more than 60 Porsches from both the air-cooled and water-cooled eras. The docket included an eclectic mix of automobiles ranging from highly original classics to restomods and more. The headline sale: the only paint-to-sample Riviera Blue 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder Weissach Package delivered to North America, sold for $4,680,000, settling just above the catalog's $4.5 million low estimate. For some context, the duPont REGISTRY Index (dRi) for a 918 Spyder equipped with the Weissach Package currently sits at $2,700,000. Part of the Holy Trinity, the 887-horsepower hybrid hypercar, was offered fresh from a major service at Porsche Woodland Hills, showing 1,267 miles at cataloging. We spotlighted several cars from the catalog, leading up to the auction, including this exquisite 2025 RUF SCR finished in paint-to-sample Türkisblau, which eventually settled at $2,095,000. Singer commissions did what Singer commissions do. The "Rio Commission," a 1992 Targa painted bespoke green with burgundy and sunset orange leather, 18-karat gold detailing that was offered not too long ago on duPont REGISTRY Live, fetching $1,160,000. The Light Ivory "Lindsey Commission" 1990 Coupe, formerly the Auburn Commission, followed at $1,022,500. Modern collectibles held their ground, too. The mezger-powered 2011 GT3 RS 4.0 with just over 5,000 miles at $995,000, a 192-mile 2016 911 R from its original owner at $747,500, a 120-mile 2023 911 Sport Classic at $714,500, a 1998 993 Turbo S WLS2 in Vesuvio metallic at $681,500, a 2018 GT2 RS in paint-to-sample Mexico Blue at $555,000, and a paint-to-sample Ultraviolet 2025 GT3 RS Weissach at $483,500. Two catalog headliners moved on without sales. Bruce Canepa joined Forester at the rostrum to introduce his Viper Green 1988 959 SC reimagined, carrying a $3.2 million low estimate, a car we first saw back in 2022. Mr.Canepa added that his company has been involved with the 959 since 1987 and has actually sold over 130 examples in the United States. Canepa said. The car did not sell on the floor; however, Mr.Canepa emphasised the importance of the 959 as being Porsche’s first supercar, and they could be worth between 10 and 15 million dollars in the future. Beyond the 959 SC, a 2007 RUF RT12, and a Kramer CK5 Group C racer all moved on without sales. Overall, Broad Arrow's 2026 Porsche Air|Water auction realized $20 million with an 84 percent sell-through rate. Broad Arrow Named Official Auction Partner of The Quail for Monterey Car Week 2026

As Monterey Car Week continues to evolve into the most important week on the global collector-car calendar, one of its most anticipated events has just gained a powerful new partner. Broad Arrow, driven by Hagerty, has been named the official auction partner of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, setting the stage for a new chapter in high-end automotive sales during the industry’s most prestigious gathering. Beginning in 2026, Broad Arrow will host a two-day auction at The Quail Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California, on August 13 and 14, aligning its gavel with the 23rd edition of The Quail. The move marks a significant milestone for the rapidly growing auction house, which, after four successful years at the Monterey Jet Center, is stepping into what many consider a crown jewel of Monterey Car Week. Broad Arrow replaces Bonhams|Cars at The Quail, which previously announced a multi-year agreement with WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for its relocated auction to take place on August 13, coinciding with the Pre-Reunion race weekend that launches Monterey Car Week. The 2026 Broad Arrow Quail Auction is expected to feature approximately 175 highly sought-after collector cars spanning pre- and post-war classics, motorsport icons, rare supercars, and emerging modern collectibles. The 2026 event will include more than a dozen vehicle debuts from top OEMs and designers, alongside a curated display of hundreds of rare and significant automobiles. Four celebrated classes will headline the lawn: the 100th Anniversary of Route 66, The Lamborghini Diablo, The Legacy of Japanese GTs, and The Ferrari F40. Beyond the concours field, The Quail is equally defined by its atmosphere.
