The New Audi Nuvolari Supercar Is The R8’s Successor

The new hybrid supercar, the first since the V10-powered R8, resembles Audi’s recent Concept C.

Audi is celebrated for its decades-long legacy of performance cars, but a void was left when the manufacturer discontinued the R8, its iconic supercar that dominated the high-performance automotive landscape for nearly two decades. A possible successor to the R8 was previewed when Audi unveiled its recent Concept C, a sports car concept that emphasized a clean, minimalist design language and driver-focused simplicity, with nods to the R8 and the original TT.

Now, a production model inspired by the Concept C has emerged: the new Audi Nuvolari supercar, and it is not only the successor to the R8 as Audi’s new supercar, but it also features the first hybrid powertrain to be at the heart of an Audi supercar. Unveiled in the midst of Audi’s first season on the prestigious Formula 1 grid, Audi CTO Rouven Mohr says, “Formula 1 is a key impulse to bring innovations to the road quickly and with precision,” about the new Nuvolari.

A 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 800 horsepower sits mid-mounted at the heart of the new Nuvolari, and it teams up with three axial flux motors to develop a total system output of 987 horsepower. With that amount of power on tap, the Nuvolari is capable of a 0-60 time of just 2.6 seconds, with a top speed of over 217 mph.

The Nuvolari’s striking design features much of the Concept C’s elegant minimalism. However, its active aerodynamics are reportedly derived from Formula 1, as are features like the energy recovery-based Launch control, the brake discs, the carbon fiber components, and more. Audi’s space frame technology has been combined with a carbon exterior in an Audi first, offering lightweight construction and torsional rigidity simultaneously.

The Titanium color that the Concept C debuted with is present on the Nuvolari, which also features an exposed carbon fiber “blade” like the R8 notoriously did. Meanwhile, the interior features a pared-back design that caters to the driver, with colors that nod to the Auto Union Type C race car of the 1930s and a two-tone color scheme in the cabin that sets a curated atmosphere. Anodized aluminum elements add elegant materiality, while carbon fiber seats combine support and comfort with lightweight construction and a focus on performance.

For the Nuvolari, Audi has introduced quattro predictive ride, a system that uses an immense amount of information about the state of the car to act proactively in situations like the potential loss of grip in a corner, for example. The drive units, brakes, and active aerodynamics all work in unison to keep the car stable, with the electric motors at the front being especially important in torque vectoring for agile cornering and high-speed confidence. Four driving modes give the quattro predictive ride system dynamic character: E-Hybrid, Balanced, Dynamic, and Dynamic+.

Inspired by motorsport, the brake-by-wire system in the new Audi Nuvolari offers variable distribution between recuperation and hydraulic braking, with a consistent and precise pedal feel. The new Audi Ceramic Pro braking system works along with electric deceleration to provide consistent braking force in high-demand, intense track use over time, and also improves the vehicle’s efficiency.

Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari is the namesake for the new Audi supercar, who raced in the 1930s for Auto Union and was known for his ambition for success. Only 499 units of the new Audi Nuvolari supercar will be made, and deliveries are set to begin in the first half of 2027. With hybrid power and engineering derived from the intensity of Formula 1 racing, the new Audi Nuvolari is poised to be the fastest and most powerful Audi production model yet.
