For the First Time Ever, BMW Brings All Art Cars Together

All 20 BMW Art Cars come together in Munich, marking 50 years of art, racing, and design in one rare, full-circle exhibition.

For more than five decades, BMW has seen its sports cars not just as German-engineered machines for roads and tracks, but as blank canvases for artistic vision, an idea that began in 1975 with the first “Art Car,” a BMW 3.0 CSL painted by American sculptor Alexander Calder and commissioned by French racing driver Hervé Poulain. Now, for the first time ever, the entire BMW Art Car Collection is coming back to where it all started in Munich.

Hosted at BMW Welt, the exhibit brings together all 20 Art Cars under one roof, marking a first-ever, must-see moment for BMW enthusiasts and anyone with a love for automotive design and contemporary art. The special showcase will be displayed from July 29th through August 31st, 2026.

That first collaboration with Alexander Calder resulted in a painted BMW 3.0 CSL that actually competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, instantly becoming a fan favorite. From there, the concept snowballed into something much bigger, with artists like Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons all leaving their mark, quite literally, on BMW’s iconic lineup, from the 1979 BMW M1 to the latest BMW M Hybrid V8. Every car mirrors the artist’s style and the era it came from, bridging motorsport and art in a way no other automaker has really matched.

This 2026 exhibition is different in scale as every single Art Car is being shown together for the first time. One of the most significant pieces is Olafur Eliasson’s BMW H2R project, a hydrogen-powered concept that’s rarely been displayed publicly. It’s a reminder that this collection isn’t just about paint jobs but also about pushing ideas forward, whether through materials, technology, or storytelling.

The Munich showcase also serves as the grand finale of the BMW Art Car World Tour, which has taken these cars to major events and museums across five continents. But bringing them all back home is a full-circle moment, 50 years of art, racing history, and design all in one place.
