McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. BRABUS Reveals 900 SUPERBLACK and 900 MINT as First Lamborghini-Based Builds

BRABUS has just closed out a memorable first appearance at the FAT Ice Race 2026 in Austria, this past weekend. The German performance tuner brand arrived in Zell am See with two 900-horsepower luxury SUVs. Held at Zell am See Airport, the FAT Ice Race combines competition, heritage cars, and modern performance in an alpine environment where conditions often change by the minute. It served as the ideal dynamic setting for a milestone vehicle for the brand, because this is the first time that a BRABUS supercar is based on a Lamborghini. At Zell am See, two interpretations were presented: the BRABUS 900 Superblack and the BRABUS 900 Mint, both based on Lamborghini’s Urus SE. <- Gallery -> The Superblack, as the name implies, is the stealthier of the two, featuring exposed carbon fiber bodywork, a widened stance, and 24-inch BRABUS Monoblock Z forged wheels, wrapped in 295-section front and 345-section rear tires. A SportXtra suspension module drops ride height by up to 0.8 inches, which helps the vehicle maintain composure during demonstration runs on snow. Inside, black leather and Alcantara defined a focused, motorsport-inspired cabin. The Mint variant took the opposite approach and proved just as effective. Finished in a vibrant BRABUS Mint, the exterior followed a strict monochromatic discipline. Carbon fiber aero components and bodywork all shared coordinated finishes that stood out sharply against snow and the white alpine backdrop. Like SUPERBLACK, MINT also runs on the same 24-inch Monoblock Z wheels, identical tire sizing, and the same lowered suspension setup. Inside, Stone Mint leather covered seats, door panels, and cockpit surfaces. Both share the same hybrid system output, delivering 900 horsepower and 774 pound-feet of torque, with a 0-60 mph time of around 3.2 seconds and a top speed limited to 194 mph. On ice, those figures become a test of balance and control rather than headline statistics. The G-Class remains foundational to the BRABUS story. For years, it defined what a BRABUS supercar SUV looked and felt like, with boxy proportions, towering stance, and brute-force presence that aligned naturally with the brand’s identity. When BRABUS builds something wearing the “Rocket” badge, it is never subtle. The new Rocket GTC Deep Red, revealed at Pebble Beach during the 2025 Monterey Car Week, is the latest in a lineage that began with the blacked-out low-slung 211 mph Rocket CLS back in ‘06, a sedan that once held the title of world’s fastest four-door. Over the years, the Rocket family has evolved from ultra-high-speed Autobahn weapons into hyper-exclusive, coachbuilt flagships like the one we see here. Today, the Rocket series sits at the very top of BRABUS’ lineup, above the brand’s G-Class configurations and even the Rocket GTS Shooting Brake. The GTC Deep Red takes the performance of the GTS, removes the roof, and turns up the drama with a body made entirely from red-tinted exposed carbon fiber. Power comes from BRABUS’ in-house 4.5-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a 204-horsepower rear-axle electric motor. Combined, you get 1,000 horsepower and 1,342 pound-feet of torque, capped at 1,195 pound-feet for drivetrain safety. The dash to 60 mph sprint in 2.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 197 mph, making it one of the fastest open-top hybrids in the world. For those who care, that hybrid system’s electric range is just 7.5 miles, and fuel economy is 18.2 mpg combined. But BRABUS’s approach is so much more than just power; it is full-scale reengineering. The all-carbon bodywork is wider, lower, and aerodynamically honed in a wind tunnel. Forged Monoblock P wheels with integrated carbon aero blades are not available on any standard SL (sans the Maybach variants), and the GTC’s bespoke “Masterpiece” interior, with quilted Shell-pattern leather and matte Shadow Gray switchgear, is crafted entirely to order. In the metal, the Rocket GTC is a coachbuilt, limited-production halo car designed for a clientele who already own multiple supercars and want something no one else will have. At roughly $800,000 (€697,800) before taxes, the Rocket GTC Deep Red is by far the most extroverted expression yet of what the Rocket badge stands for. While BRABUS has not officially announced exact production numbers for the Rocket GTC Deep Red, its closely related siblings provide a strong clue. The AMG-GT-based Rocket 1000 coupe and Rocket GTS Shooting Brake, which share the same hybrid powertrain and core engineering, are each limited to 25 units worldwide. BRABUS Reveals New 900 Peetch & 600 Peetch

BRABUS ventures towards bright color. Known for its over-the-top customizations and performance enhancements of luxury vehicles, BRABUS has become one of the biggest household names in the realm of automotive customization. While it has been mainly known for its customizations of Mercedes-Benz models, recent years have seen BRABUS expand its reach to include other manufacturers’ vehicles, imparting the same signature style, comprehensive customization, and high-performance engineering to vehicles from Rolls-Royce, Porsche, and Range Rover. BRABUS Unveils New BIG BOY 1200 Motorhome

BRABUS luxury goes bigger than ever. BRABUS is known for its unique customizations of luxury and performance cars, which all feature an unmistakable style executed through incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail, as well as heightened performance that sets BRABUS creations apart from standard counterparts. However, BRABUS has recently expanded its scope of expertise, customizing more vehicles like boats, and offering various lifestyle products, as well. However, revealed at its 2024 Signature Night event, BRABUS unveiled one of its largest creations yet: a motorhome. Appropriately named the BRABUS BIG BOY 1200, the new luxury motorhome is a luxury RV finished with BRABUS’s unmistakable signature style, sporting an all-black exterior with exposed carbon fiber treatments throughout. In addition, BRABUS has given its signature style to the motorhome’s BRABUS MASTERPIECE interior. The motorhome sports an elegant monochromatic grayscale theme, with luxurious materials like marble and black finishes throughout, along with BRABUS's celebrated craftsmanship. It boasts an impressive length of nearly 40 feet, with 323 square feet of living space, with slide-out sections for extra space, high-tech features, and eight solar panels to help power the luxury motorhome. Powering the vehicle itself, however, is a 12.8-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel engine, capable of producing a robust 530 horsepower and an immense 1,928 lb/ft of torque. Being a massive luxury motorhome, the BRABUS BIG BOY 1200 is limited to a top speed of 56 mph. BRABUS Unveils New Documentary Series About Signature Nig...

Take a look behind the scenes of BRABUS’s biggest night. Last year, BRABUS put on an incredible show called Signature Night, where every facet of its unmistakable yet diverse brand was showcased, from fashion to watches, cars, and motorbikes. Now, nearly a year after the iconic event took place, BRABUS is looking back at its grandeur and pioneering nature in a new documentary series that details how Signature Night came together. The first episode is finally here, with the six-episode documentary releasing episodes on April 11, April 12, April 13, April 14, April 20, and April 21. The first episode is out now, and it discusses the unbridled ambition of the bold idea to put together a fashion show that showcases custom cars alongside fashion and even more. The idea to do Signature Night was one that Constantin Buschmann, CEO of BRABUS, had for as long as 7 years, and the idea came from looking outside the automotive industry for inspiration to elevate BRABUS’s presence. In an industry where typically, new products are displayed at large shows in a static form where it is difficult to command the attention of attendees among the many brands that are presenting. Instead, BRABUS would create an entirely new kind of show, displaying incredible custom cars among its other products on a moving runway in a Fashion Week-like spectacle. One of the biggest challenges was finding a venue, with BRABUS deciding to use a large warehouse space near its headquarters, which was not only practical but provided a beautiful blank canvas to create a bespoke and captivating display. However, putting together something so immense doesn’t come without some form of setback, and the episode captures the moment after the BRABUS headquarters was unfortunately broken into. While nothing of note was stolen, the show had to go on, and the episode ends with Buschmann seeing what the final invitation to the show would look like being surprised with his own. Shmee150 sees where BRABUS makes magic in Bottrop, Germany. BRABUS is known all over the world for creating some of the most exciting custom creations in automotive history. In order to see where it all happens, prolific car enthusiast and YouTube personality Shmee150 went to Bottrop, Germany to tour their incredible headquarters facility. He starts in the showroom, which shows off some of BRABUS’s latest models, including the 850, based on the V12-powered Mercedes-Maybach S 680, and the Rocket 900 R, an incredible supercar based on the Porsche 911 Turbo S, as well as a Range Rover-based creation, which are marking BRABUS’s expansion beyond customizing only Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Shmee’s tour continues throughout the massive facility, showing the servicing facilities and where the cars are made into unique masterpieces, including getting an up close and personal look at the materials, innovations and engineering solutions that are crucial to making the masterpieces that wear the BRABUS name. One of the most interesting parts is the look at the interior workshop, where BRABUS shows off its ability to create custom, bespoke interiors with a broad spectrum of colors, beautiful contrast stitching, and sumptuous, supple hides. Continuing to show off its bespoke abilities, BRABUS also showed off the advanced configurator that the 25 BRABUS Rocket 900 R clients use to spec their cars, with virtually limitless viewing angles and a library of options and choices to make the car nothing short of perfect. The facility also boasts a certified testing facility for cars, which helps BRABUS achieve its dedication to incredibly-crafted custom machines. BRABUS also showed off the production of some of its most iconic and exclusive creations: the XLP and 6x6 conversions of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, as well as the rare Crawler, which turn the legendary off-roading SUV into a head-turning truck and a zany off-roading racer, with exclusivity and unmatched presence. With the tour continuing to BRABUS’s Classic department, the iconic brand showed off its dedication to preserving the legacy of historic cars, as well.
