McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Bugatti Reveals W16 Mistral “Le Retour du Jeune Prince”, Its Latest Sur Mesure One-Off

As Bugatti closes out the chapter on its glorious VW era, the French marque continues turning the W16 Mistral into a rolling canvas for some of its most personal Sur Mesure commissions yet. Following standout creations like “La Perle Rare” and the aviation-inspired “Fly Bug,” both of which were revealed earlier this year, this latest one-off from Molsheim may be the most unique interpretation of the roadster so far. Dubbed the Bugatti W16 Mistral “Le Retour du Jeune Prince,” this bespoke open-top hypercar draws inspiration from literature, moonlight, and the owner’s own imagination. The commission centers around a continuation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s iconic “The Little Prince,” written by the collector himself and translated by Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division into an automotive work of art. The project began in October 2023, when the collector met with Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, in Molsheim to shape the car’s creative direction. Together with Bugatti’s CMF team in Berlin, the concept evolved into a deeply detailed specification built around earthy metallic tones, celestial imagery, and handcrafted storytelling elements. “The W16 Mistral 'Le Retour du Jeune Prince' is a beautiful example of what Sur Mesure can achieve when a customer’s personal story is placed at the heart of the creative process,” - Jascha Straub, Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, Bugatti. Finished in a bespoke copper-and-bronze colorway, this W16 Mistral reflects light with a warm metallic glow that dramatically shifts across the car’s sculpted surfaces. The signature horseshoe grille was redesigned with lines that visually flow upward with the hood, while gold accents surrounding the Bugatti Macaron, copper brake calipers, and matching “EB” wheel emblems reinforce the theme throughout the exterior. Silver stars hand-painted into the rear bodywork form constellations across the roadster’s surface through an intricate layering process performed by Bugatti artisans. Hidden beneath the active rear air brake sits a tribute to Saint-Exupéry’s original story, revealing an illustration inspired by the famous prince-and-fox scene whenever the wing deploys. <- Gallery -> Inside, Terre d’Or and Driftwood leather upholster the cabin, joined by embroidered moon imagery stitched directly into the door panels and headrests. Brown carbon fiber trim carries constellation-inspired detailing, while the centerpiece remains the gear selector’s sculpted silver rose, created from a 3D scan of a real flower before being transformed into miniature jewelry-like artwork. Beyond its craftsmanship, the W16 Mistral remains one of the greatest Bugattis ever made. The open-top hypercar serves as the final road-going expression of Bugatti’s W16 platform that began with the Veryon under Ferdinand Piëch, while subsequently also doing duty on the Chiron family, which includes the Mistral, limited to just 99 examples. Bugatti EB110 Super Sport Listed For Sale

Bugatti is known today for its hypercars that have defined the genre with their unparalleled performance, unfathomable engineering, sumptuous luxury, and opulent exclusivity. However, before Bugatti reshaped the hypercar landscape with the Veyron in the early 2000s, it had a revival in the ‘90s with the EB110. Like the Veyron, the EB110 featured a quad-turbocharged engine. However, rather than being a W16, the EB110’s engine was a V12. Today, the EB110 is a collector masterpiece of ‘90s supercar excess, and each of the two variants of the EB110 has a unique appeal to enthusiasts. The inaugural version of the EB110 was the EB110 GT, and it was created as the more luxurious, comfortable version of the supercar. However, alongside it is the EB110 SS, or Super Sport. Compared to the GT, the Super Sport has 50 more horsepower at 603, along with a fixed wing in comparison to the GT’s active wing. Only a handful of Bugatti EB110s were made. The EB110 GT is already exceedingly rare, with 80 examples made, but the Super Sport is even rarer. The Unique Story Of The Bugatti Veyron Chassis 5.1

Old and new alike, any Bugatti is right at home at a concours event. Throughout the manufacturer’s long and rich history, its cars have always been known for impressive performance, historical significance, opulent luxury, and, of course, timeless beauty. Bugatti’s 21st-century revival came in the form of the Veyron, and it didn’t just shape Bugatti’s legacy but the trajectory of the entire supercar world. Its unprecedented power and performance are largely thanks to the quad-turbocharged W16 engine, which set new standards in the automotive industry, and was the work of laborious years of development and engineering. Before the series production Bugatti Veyron broke cover, a handful of pre-series cars were a crucial part of the development process, helping shape the engineering that would eventually make the Veyron a transformative masterpiece. One is Bugatti Veyron Chassis 5.1, and it was recently showcased at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as a part of Bugatti’s La Maison Pur Sang program. Dedicated to the historical preservation and authentication of Bugatti’s masterpieces, La Maison Pur Sang puts together records, service documentation, photographs, and other archived documents to tell the story of cars like Veyron Chassis 5.1. <- Gallery -> For the car’s new custodian, La Maison Pur Sang uncovered an incredible story behind the car, one that was largely a mystery before. Chassis 5.1 was one of six pre-series Veyrons built before the start of customer car production. Brought to Nevada’s salt flats, the car was used for high-speed and endurance testing, trialing the vehicle in extreme conditions. After that, it was registered in Germany in September 2005 and was showcased in Sicily for the first global dynamic event for the Veyron. After traversing the world to showcase the Veyron, Chassis 5.1 was reconfigured with silk seats and showcased in North America, being shown to clients at venues like Pebble Beach, The Quail, and more. After that, it was reconfigured again in 2007, and records from Bugatti Greenwich indicate that it continued its technical role. Its final transformation came in 2008, returning to Molsheim to be configured like the customer-spec cars. Showcased in Lake Como for the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Bugatti Veyron Chassis 5.1’s story comes back to life nearly two decades later. That’s why Bugatti set out to create something unprecedented, combining a naturally aspirated V16 engine with a hybrid system to give the Tourbillon immense power (1,800 horsepower total) and singularity worthy of the world’s finest automotive collections. In the same way that the Veyron raised the bar for hypercars in the 2000s, the Bugatti Tourbillon aims to define an echelon in the automotive world. The journey towards achieving that has been captured in Bugatti’s “A New Era” docuseries about the creation of the Tourbillon, and the latest episode is one of the most exciting, as it sees the new Bugatti Tourbillon take on cold-weather testing in Arjeplog, Sweden. Far in the northern reaches of the Scandinavian country, Arjeplog is known for its frozen expanses of ice and snow, making it the perfect venue for cold-weather testing of Tourbillon prototype cars. The validation prototypes took to the extreme environment to ensure that, while the hypercar is unlikely to take on such harsh conditions, the engineering is sound enough to handle the harshest of environments. The hybrid powertrain is challenged by the incredibly low temperatures, the drivetrain is challenged by low grip, and other systems like climate control, windshield defogging, and more were validated in the tough conditions. One of the most important and complex mechanisms in the car is its braking system, which is not only paramount for safety, but also is involved in the hybrid system with regenerative braking. The team not only faced the challenges of the testing itself, but also encountered the unique aspects of their environment, being near the Arctic Circle. Already some of the most desirable, luxurious, and exclusive vehicles on the planet, Sur Mesure adds a layer of individuality that makes a Bugatti a truly unique statement. The latest commission to emerge from Bugatti Sur Mesure is one of just 99 Bugatti W16 Mistral examples, and it belongs to a collector who celebrates nature with insect-themed commissions. Named the W16 Mistral ‘Fly Bug,’ the new commission joins the others: the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse ‘Hellbug,’ the Bugatti Chiron ‘Hellbee,’ and the Bugatti Divo ‘Lady Bug.’ Each of them, including the newest, celebrates the marvel of some of the smallest and most overlooked fauna in the world. In the case of the dragonfly, it was the creature’s iridescent wings and effortless speed that inspired the configuration. What started as a personal exchange between the collector and Frank Heyl, Bugatti’s Head of Design, was then handled by the Color, Materials, and Finish team in Bugatti’s Design Studio in Berlin, whose task was to make sure that while the Mistral was a unique creation, it also remained cohesive with the rest of the insect-themed Bugatti collection. A bespoke color called ‘Dragonfly Blue’ adorns the exterior, and it shifts between blue and turquoise in the light like the iridescence of a dragonfly’s wings. 1994 Bugatti EB110 For Sale

Porsche Sells Stakes In Bugatti Rimac

2021 saw the formation of Bugatti Rimac, a combination of Rimac Group with the historic and cherished Bugatti brand that saw Rimac Group as the majority owner and Porsche as the minority stakeholder, with Porsche also holding stakes in Rimac Group. However, that arrangement is now changing, as Porsche and Rimac Group have announced the sale of Porsche’s stake in the Bugatti Rimac company and Rimac Group to HOF Capital. The consortium includes BlueFive Capital as its largest investor, along with a group of institutional investors across the US and EU. Once the sale is complete, Rimac Group is set to take control of Bugatti Rimac while entering a strategic partnership with HOF Capital and BlueFive Capital. The transaction is set to be complete before the end of 2026. Bugatti Reveals Arctic Test Footage of the Tourbillon V16 Hypercar

Earlier in the year, we watched Bugatti Rimac CEO, Mate Rimac, put the upcoming Bugatti Tourbillon through its paces in the snow. Now, newly released footage shows the Tourbillon deep inside Sweden’s Arctic testing grounds. Three prototypes have now covered more than 4,970 miles near the Arctic Circle, supported by a 28-person specialist team, with temperatures dropping to minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Every input, from throttle mapping to regenerative braking, is recalibrated for a surface that offers minimal grip. The setting reveals details that controlled environments cannot. Against a frozen lake, the Bugatti Tourbillon’s exposed carbon fiber bodywork reads differently. Aerodynamic surfaces, especially the rear diffuser and wing assembly, stand out sharply against the snow after repeated drift cycles. Engineers use these sessions to study airflow disruption, stability, and heat management when the car transitions between grip and slip at high speed. It allows for calibration of torque delivery from the hybrid system, ensuring that all 1,800 horsepower can be deployed progressively, even when traction is limited. Inside, the prototype environment is unapologetically raw. Exposed wiring runs across the cabin, feeding continuous data back to engineers. On the dash sits the mechanical instrument cluster from which this hypercar takes its name. Made from over 600 components in titanium, sapphire, and ruby. It continues to function without compromise despite sustained exposure to extreme cold. As a refresher, power comes from an 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 developed with Cosworth, paired with three electric motors. Two operate at the front axle, one at the rear, for a combined 1,800 horsepower. 0 to 60 mph takes under 2 seconds, with a top speed of 276 mph. 1-of-1 Bugatti La Voiture Noire Returns to Market With Its Original Owner Finally Revealed

For years, the single-unit Bugatti La Voiture Noire stood out as the ultimate automotive mystery. Unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show by then Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann, the one-off hypercar was already sold for approximately €16.7 million, about $18.7 million including taxes, even before it was revealed to the public. The La Voiture Noire featured on the cover of our May 2019 issue was recognized as the world’s most expensive new car. Bugatti described it as a one-of-a-kind “haute couture” creation. Only the Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail, priced between $30 million and $32 million, and the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, at around $28 million, have since surpassed them when looking at the most expensive cars in the world. The secrecy around its ownership fueled intense speculation. Names ranged from elite athletes to high-net-worth collectors. It turns out the hypercar was purchased by former Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch. The deal actually took place back in 2019, but it was never officially confirmed, fueling endless speculation. Piëch’s influence on Bugatti runs deep, and the French marque recently paid tribute to him in January this year with the F.K.P. Homage, which was a Solitaire one-off. He pushed the development of the legendary 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine that powered the Veyron to its record-setting 253 mph top speed back in the mid-2000s. He famously sketched the W16 concept by hand while traveling at 199 mph on a Japanese bullet train. That same architecture sits at the core of La Voiture Noire. Designed by Etienne Salomé, the car itself draws directly from the lost Type 57 SC Atlantic, one of four built in the 1930s. One chassis, known as “La Voiture Noire,” vanished before World War II and remains missing. Bugatti’s modern interpretation carries six exhaust outlets, a sculpted black carbon-fiber body with a prominent dorsal fin that runs along the length of the vehicle, and proportions that echo the original Atlantic’s long hood and fastback profile. Piëch sadly passed away in 2019, the same year the car debuted. Delivery followed in 2021, transferring ownership to his son, Anton Piëch. This one-off hypercar is currently being offered through a discreet broker. According to German newspaper Handelsblatt, which says it has access to exclusive sales documents, La Voiture Noire is offered through a discreet process of submission of offers for 23 million Swiss francs, or about $28.8 million. The move ties directly to funding needs for Piëch Automotive, the electric vehicle startup co-founded in 2017 by Anton Pïech.
