McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Bugatti Restores and Reimagines a One-Off Veyron Through La Maison Pur Sang

Bugatti has unveiled the La Maison Pur Sang Veyron 20 Years, a one-off Veyron restored and reworked through its La Maison Pur Sang programme. Unveiled at Pebble Beach, the project marks 20 years since the model entered production. Developed jointly with its owner, the car demonstrates the programme's expanding ability to reimagine existing Bugattis. Finished in Rouge Rembrandt over Petrol Blue, it uses two exterior colors previously unavailable on the Veyron. Rouge Rembrandt was developed for the Tourbillon, while Petrol Blue comes from the Chiron palette. Bugatti has also developed larger wheels that reinterpret the Veyron's original Machiavelli design. Measuring 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the rear, they allow the car to use Chiron-sized tires. New three-dimensional mesh replaces the original treatment of the front, side, and rear air intakes. Inside, the Magnolia leather cabin features Mocassin stitching on the steering wheel and gear selector, while a 20 Years of Veyron emblem sits between the seats. The center console is finished with Côte de Genève, the striped decoration commonly used on mechanical watch movements. Bugatti says applying the finish to such a large, three-dimensional automotive surface presented a significant technical challenge The detail follows Bugatti's wider use of watchmaking references, including the V16-powered Tourbillon's mechanical instrument cluster and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak fitted to an earlier one-off. Its 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 went on to power the Veyron, becoming the fastest production car in the world. Old and new alike, any Bugatti is right at home at a concours event. Throughout the manufacturer’s long and rich history, its cars have always been known for impressive performance, historical significance, opulent luxury, and, of course, timeless beauty. Bugatti’s 21st-century revival came in the form of the Veyron, and it didn’t just shape Bugatti’s legacy but the trajectory of the entire supercar world. Its unprecedented power and performance are largely thanks to the quad-turbocharged W16 engine, which set new standards in the automotive industry, and was the work of laborious years of development and engineering. Before the series production Bugatti Veyron broke cover, a handful of pre-series cars were a crucial part of the development process, helping shape the engineering that would eventually make the Veyron a transformative masterpiece. One is Bugatti Veyron Chassis 5.1, and it was recently showcased at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as a part of Bugatti’s La Maison Pur Sang program. After that, it was registered in Germany in September 2005 and was showcased in Sicily for the first global dynamic event for the Veyron. After traversing the world to showcase the Veyron, Chassis 5.1 was reconfigured with silk seats and showcased in North America, being shown to clients at venues like Pebble Beach, The Quail, and more. After that, it was reconfigured again in 2007, and records from Bugatti Greenwich indicate that it continued its technical role. Its final transformation came in 2008, returning to Molsheim to be configured like the customer-spec cars. Showcased in Lake Como for the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the Bugatti Veyron Chassis 5.1’s story comes back to life nearly two decades later. Here's How Bugatti Restored A Historic Pre-Series Veyron Super Sport World Record Edition

Bugatti has completed the restoration of a historically significant Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition through its heritage and certification program, La Maison Pur Sang. The initiative brings together engineers, technicians, and craftspeople who restore Bugatti hyper sports cars to the exact standards they carried when they first left the Atelier. 15 years ago, the Veyron Super Sport represented a major step forward for the French marque when it debuted in June 2010. Bugatti pushed the limits of automotive engineering with an output of 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 pound-feet of torque. The hypercar is capable of 0 to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 258 mph in production specification. That same year, Bugatti pursued something more ambitious. Under the strict protocols of Guinness World Records, the Veyron Super Sport recorded a verified top speed of 267.856 mph, or 431.072 km/h, establishing a new world speed record, making it the fastest production car in the world at the time, a record that stood for seven years until the Koenigsegg Agara RS’ 277.9 mph set in November, 2017. TopGear fans among you will remember James May’s run in a Veyron Super Sport, which finished in the same carbon over orange specification at Volkswagen Ehra‑Lessien Test Track, where the car demonstrated the extraordinary performance that made Bugatti a dominant force in the hypercar world. Beyond the public spotlight, this specific car also played a technical role. Engineers used it during development to refine systems and technologies that ultimately defined the production version of the Veyron Super Sport. After more than 70,800 kilometers, or roughly 44,000 miles, of use since the summer of 2010, the car returned to Molsheim for a detailed six-month restoration. Specialists addressed every element with the same approach used when building a new Bugatti. The exterior required equally meticulous work. Experts refinished the exposed carbon fiber bodywork and applied a fresh clear coat. The signature Bugatti orange accents were carefully repainted, restoring the dramatic contrast that defines the World Record Edition’s appearance. Inside the cabin, craftsmen restored the leather surfaces and reshaped the seats to their original structure and comfort. Technicians fully serviced the steering wheel, the primary point of contact between driver and machine, ensuring the tactile experience remained faithful to the original design. During the process, several pre-series components were upgraded to match final production specifications, including electronics and radiator systems. Bugatti was present at this year’s I.C.E. St. Moritz, and over 20,000 visitors across two days got the chance to witness some of Bugatti’s oldest and newest masterpieces. Bugatti’s Latest Solitaire One-off is an 8-Figure Ode to Ferdinand Piëch

Hommage, the second car to be commissioned through the French marque's new Programme Solitaire, a new, ultra-exclusive division dedicated to creating bespoke, coachbuilt hypercars. This one-off that was last week, pays tribute to one of the most influential automotive personalities of the 20th century, Ferdinand Karl Piëch. Decades into his seemingly limitless career, the Austrian impresario acted on the urge to build a vehicle of inconceivable capability. The man responsible for Porsche 917 Longtails roaring down the Mulsanne straight at 240 mph, innovative “VR” powerplants for Volkswagen, and the groundbreaking all-wheel drive system powering the monstrous Audi S1 Quattro Group B rally car would ultimately acquire the Bugatti brand in 1998. Piëch’s pièce de resistance started life as a napkin sketch on the Japanese bullet train and became the Veyron, a moonshot whose never-before-achieved goals were to produce 1,000 horsepower and hit 250 mph, yet be civilized enough to pull up at the opera in style. It’s been two decades since the Veyron wowed the cognoscenti. Among those who is one particularly passionate collector who commissioned a one-off that poses an intriguing idea: What if Bugatti built a facelift of the O.G. hypercar before moving on to the Chiron? Unlike Bugatti’s other Solitaire project, dubbed Brouillard, the F.K.P. is inspired by the Veyron. Every carbon fiber body panel has been resculpted for a sleeker, more smoothed-out reinterpretation of the first modern Bugatti’s lines. Bugatti Director of Design Frank Heyl tells duPont Registry that the Veyron was already a novel design when it was first unveiled as a concept in 1999. “Before the Veyron supercars were perceived as this forward-angled wedge shape still inspired by the works of Marcello Gandini,” he says. “We recall the Lancia Stratos Zero, Ferrari Modulo, or even some of the first Countaches. We did the opposite; it was a novel lean back, a body posture we wanted to capture here.” The reimagined one-off is finished in the same paint scheme as one of the collector’s beloved Veyrons, though this time around, a novel production technique was employed. Starting with bare carbon fiber panels, the finish leverages advanced layering techniques using a silver aluminum-based coat underneath a clearcoat that’s tinted red. The black portions are actually black-tinted exposed carbon fiber that incorporates a 10% black pigment into the clearcoat. Heyl notes that the traditional horseshoe grille found up front, hewn from a block of solid aluminum, has also been reworked into a more three-dimensional shape. The Veyron redux now sits on updated wheel sizes (20-inch front and 21-inch rear), wrapped in the latest Michelin tire technology, which requires less expensive replacement than the original model. The resculpted bodywork hides the 1,600 metric horsepower, quad-turbocharged powerplant from the Chiron Super Sport, the engine that broke new ground by shattering the 300 mph barrier. Inside, the F.K.P Hommage is upholstered in a woven fabric sourced from Paris, which flies in the face of conventional leather materials. While the metal-turned dashboard and knurled knobs recall the Chiron, the round steering wheel recalls and is a throwback to the original Veyron design. However, the real mic drop comes in the form of a custom 41mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon sitting atop the center panel. Though it has no electrical connection to the car, its enclosure rotates on a diagonal axis several times per hour to keep the timepiece perennially wound. <- Gallery -> The owner, who will keep this very special one-off in Europe, remains unnamed but is described by Heyl as a consummate collector and Bugatti enthusiast whose collaboration required over two years of back-and-forth with the design and engineering teams. “As you can imagine, with these Solitaire programs, there needs to be discipline in terms of how many loops we can go through; there must be a similar understanding of the project. With this particular customer, who is a huge Veyron fan and connoisseur, there was an immediate understanding of the values we want to bring into these cars,” He reveals. “We wanted to honor Ferdinand Piëch and the ways he worked. How "Chassis 5.0" Helped Shape The Legendary Bugatti Veyron

Before the Veyron made history. Before it was a record-breaker, the Bugatti Veyron was just a dream that seemed too ambitious even for Bugatti. Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Karl Piëch imagined a car that could do everything from outpace anything on a track to delivering a comfortable ride to its passengers. It was designed to be something in between, a fantasy that even the best engineers of the time weren’t sure could exist. But that’s what made it worth chasing. Years of sketches, calculations, and late-night problem-solving eventually led to the final proving ground for that vision, the pre-production Series 5 prototypes. By the time the Series 5 cars were built in the early 2000s, the Veyron project had already gone through countless false starts and breakthroughs. The task was unlike anything in automotive history, creating a road car with more than 1,000 horsepower that could stay cool, composed, and civilized. The team spent years learning how to tame the heat, the aero, and the power that the W16 engine would unleash. The Series 5 cars were where everything finally came together as experiments, designed to fail, improve, and try again until the car was right. This past weekend in Molsheim, Bugatti's hometown, once again became the stage for honoring both the birthday of founder Ettore Bugatti and the 20th anniversary of the car that changed the hypercar world forever, the Bugatti Veyron. Widely considered the world's first true hypercar, the Veyron set a new standard in the automotive world when it launched back in 2005. Two decades later, the legacy still holds strong, and Bugatti celebrated the milestone with Le Petit Tour Alsace, a special gathering of Veyron owners and enthusiasts during the annual Bugatti Festival. The weekend offered owners a chance to celebrate their prized possessions and the shared passion and community that has grown with the brand. With just 450 examples ever produced, each car carries its own history, and in many ways, gathering them together in Bugatti's birthplace highlighted their individuality as a collective legacy. Bugatti Honors Veyron’s 20-Year Legacy With A Special Logo

Bugatti’s latest tribute to the Veyron for its 20th anniversary turned out not to be another 1,800-horsepower special, a six-figure watch, or even another piece of extravagant lifestyle merchandise. Instead, it’s a logo. Unveiled at the 2025 Bugatti Festival in Molsheim that concluded yesterday, the “20 Years of Veyron” emblem features the French tricolore woven into the number 20 alongside the signature of Pierre Veyron, the gentleman racer who won the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans for the marque. It’s a restrained celebration by Bugatti standards, where Visitors to the Parc des Jésuites were treated to a diverse lineup of historic and modern Bugattis, capped with a parade through Molsheim. The timing wasn’t accidental; as today, the 15th of September would have also marked Ettore Bugatti’s 144th birthday. But there's a lot to the Veyron story, and you'll have to look back at some of our earlier coverage to get the big picture. Earlier this year, we documented the story of the record-breaking Veyron on Ferdinand Piëch’s 88th birthday in April. Piëch, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, personally drove Volkswagen Group’s acquisition of Bugatti in the 1990s, and demanded a car that would reset the limits of engineering. We explored the humble beginnings of the quad-turbocharged W16 engine, why Bugatti chose to honor Pierre Veyron with the name of the world’s fastest production car, and how design concept studies like the EB 118, EB 218, EB 18/3 Chiron, and EB 18/4 Veyron paved the way for the final production version that changed the hypercar landscape forever. The path to the 2005 debut was anything but straightforward. In 1997, Piëch sketched an 18-cylinder engine on the back of an envelope while riding a train in Japan. That doodle inspired five Bugatti concepts, starting with the aforementioned EB 118 grand tourer unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1998. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the EB 118 utilized a 555-horsepower W18 engine. The EB 218 sedan followed in Geneva, then the EB 18/3 Chiron at Frankfurt, and the EB 18/4 Veyron in Tokyo. Each iteration edged closer to reality, but the final production car arrived with a completely reworked 8.0-liter W16, a powerplant whose reign only ended with the Mistral and all-wheel drive. When the Veyron finally debuted in 2005, the numbers seemed otherworldly. The 8.0-liter, quad-turbo W16 famously delivered 1,001 metric horsepower (987 hp U.S.) and a verified 253 mph top speed. That run, conducted at VW’s Ehra-Lessien test track with Le Mans winner Andy Wallace at the wheel, marked the end of the McLaren F1’s decade-long reign as the world's fastest production car. At roughly $1.25 million a piece and nearly $2 billion in development costs, the Veyron was not a business case; it was Ferdinand Piëch’s attempt at it, cementing Bugatti’s place at the top of the performance hierarchy. Over the Veyron's 10-year-long production run, 450 examples were produced at the Molseihm facility, across several variants and special editions. Bugatti’s low-key tribute this year, just a logo, a parade, and a festival, feels almost modest for a brand built on spectacle. But maybe that’s the point.
