McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. 1969 Dodge Daytona Barn Find Up for Auction

It has flames. It has rust. And it was found in a barn. I give to you this 1969 Dodge Daytona barn find, being offered by Mecum Auctions at their Kissimmee 2016 event. Photo by Teddy Pieper, Courtesy of Mecum AuctionsOriginally bought as a gift for the first owner's wife, it changed hands in 1974. Since then, the second owner has had it in their possession. It comes with its "original wing, front fender bubbles, wide windshield edge trim, and nose cone" according to the lot's description. Another important original piece is its Dodge 440 Magnum engine, with a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. It also had some sweet flames added to the front at some point.The 20,533 miles on the odometer is the believed actual mileage, which isn't hard to believe considering the car looks like it's been in a static position for quite some time.Inside, the car still retains all of its original pieces, including factory options like the headrest-equipped buckets seats, clock/tachometer assembly, chrome floor shifter and more.Interested in owning one of just 503 Daytona's built? Star Wars Dodge Viper and and Hellcats Tour L.A.

Are you excited for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"? Of course you are, it's Star Wars.Right now, if you were to walk around a department store, or even a grocery store, you'd find Star Wars products everywhere. And, thanks to Dodge, this sci-fi movie craze isn't stopping in the store: it's out on the streets. Heck, even Jay Leno just drove around a real-life Darth Vader Hot Wheels car.To celebrate the new movie, Dodge created a few cars, each styled around the new addition in the Star Wars saga. First up is a pair of First Order Stormtrooper-theme SRT Hellcats, including a Challenger and Charger. Each are, of course, packing 707 hp. Joining them is a Dodge Viper ACR that was designed after Kylo Ren, who is presumed to be the main antagonist in "The Force Awakens."If you'd like to see these cars, they will be touring the Los Angeles area December 11-14.(Source: FCA)

Dodge Viper ACR Beats 13 Track Time Records for Productio...

For more than two decades, the Viper has held a spot at the top of America's most powerful production cars, capable of taking on almost any other car on the track.With each iteration, the model has become more powerful and faster, and in its latest form, it's not just one of the fastest production cars in America - it's one of the fastest in the world. In a series of tests, the new 2016 Dodge Viper ACR broke 13 separate track time records. As a YouTube video and press release both shared Nov. 3 tell us, it holds the most records of any production car in the world.With recent discussions confirming the closure of Dodge's Connor Avenue Assembly Plant in 2017, where the Viper is crafted by hand, it's feared that the Viper's reign may be coming to end. But with records like these, Dodge would be remiss to bring its production to a total stop.The 2016 Dodge ACR offers 645 hp and 600 lb-ft from its naturally aspirated V10, enough to push it to a top speed of 177 mph. It's a street legal car capable of being a weekend racer, and it'll take down nearly any other car at the track. The Sports Car Club of America has certified the Viper ACR as holding the most lap records of any production car in the world.“We expected our new Viper ACR to be the fastest street-legal Viper track car ever," described Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands - Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and Fiat, FCA - North America, in the release. Trip to the Viper's Den: Carl Jones Photography

Article and photos by Carl Jones, Carl Jones Photography There has been a lot of talk over the last few weeks about the fate of one of Detroit’s automotive all-stars. The Dodge Viper, a car that ceased production in 2010, but was resurrected in 2013 under the new Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, could once again see an end to its production in 2017.Just as Detroit will always be a fixture in America’s automotive and manufacturing history, the Dodge Viper, regardless of its fate, will be a part of that history as well.Sitting inconspicuously on Detroit’s upper eastside is Fiat Chrysler’s Conner Avenue Assembly Plant (CAAP), home of the handcrafted Dodge Viper. I recently had the opportunity to tour the facility that has produced the Viper since Oct. 1995.Upon my arrival at CAAP, I checked in with security and was given my parking instructions. Since I drive a Chrysler vehicle anyways, I didn’t have to park at the very back of the lot. Once inside, I met the team that would be escorting and briefing us. The morning started with a brief video overview of the Viper and the people that build it. After getting a safety briefing and pair of glasses, it was time to start the tour.Upon walking into the plant area we spent some time looking at the various display cars. Some of these were early generation Vipers, as well as IMSA race winners with road grime and scuff marks still in place. A few steps away were various engine displays, from the earlier model V10 engine, to the current handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10 OHV engine.It was interesting to see a little engine building taking place right behind the display area. It was explained that a very specialized team builds the engine in six stations, with each individual responsible for a certain set of tasks for each engine build. Once the engine is completed it gets sent off for dyno testing, and then is returned to CAAP days later to fall back into the production process.Having gone to college for Supply Chain Management, I’ve taken many tours of automotive manufacturing facilities, so I was very interested in the supply chain process at CAPP. Walking onto the floor of CAAP was a much different feeling than I’m used to; this was not your average auto plant. Cars were being built, no doubt, but there was a calmness going on inside, a very stark contrast to a mass-market plant. Although, when one of the rolling chassis had to be driven onto the final assembly line, the plant came alive as the roar of the Viper exhaust resonated across the floor.The rolling chassis is a completely operational vehicle, minus the body panels, glass and other interior components. Once these chassis reach their staging area, it pings the supplier base to sequence the additional parts needed to complete the vehicle. You’ll notice that the CAAP does not have an in house paint shop; rather, they use a supplier who handles the painting duties.Prefix Coatings in Auburn Hills, Michigan handles all painting duties for the Viper. Having a dedicated paint supplier allows for the resources and manpower to hand paint each set of Viper body components. And, yes, Prefix Coatings can give you just about any color you can dream up through the Viper 1 of 1 customization program.Our tour ended at the end of the final assembly line, where I happened to catch a silver Viper on its way out the door. Across the way was the paint/vehicle inspection area, where cars sit under a bank of fluorescent lights while CAAP inspectors go over every inch for imperfections. There happened to be quite a few ACRs sitting around waiting for inspection. Though we did not get a chance to see the remaining processes, like the water test and the shake test, I still had an awesome time!A lot can change in a year’s time, but regardless of FCA’s decision, the Dodge Viper will forever carry the words “Detroit. Dodge Viper Production Could Be Ending in 2017

It has only been back for a couple years since its 2012 reintroduction, but we now know that we may be saying "goodbye" to the Dodge Viper come 2017.An October 9 newsletter from United Auto Works (UAW), highlighting a new proposed tentative agreement with FCA members, stated that, after 2017, the Connor Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan will not be in production. This plant just so happens to be where the Viper is created. The newsletter also states, "No future product has yet been identified beyond the product life cycle" at the Connor plant.(Also Read: Ferrari Stock Debuts on NYSE as “RACE”)This proposed agreement was made official when UAW FCA members ratified the new contract on Oct. 22.“UAW members at FCA have obtained a strong agreement that provides substantial wage gains, fairness in the workplace and job security," said UAW FCA US Vice President Norwood Jewell in an October 22 release from UAW. 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Review

There’s no denying that Dodge’s Charger has been a sedan to be reckoned with since it returned in 2006. At the time, Chrysler and its brands were merged with Daimler, so the Charger was given an advanced chassis from the 1998-2005 Mercedes S-Class. Since then, the powerful sedan has seen constant evolution, and is now available with an incredible 707 hp supercharged V8.If you don’t need that much power, several flavors are available, and we spent some time with their bread and butter R/T offering. At first glance this white sedan with a black/red interior is unassuming, but careful examination reveals serious potential. You won’t find two-tone 20” wheels on lesser models. This car had the optional Super Track Pack, which includes more aggressive brakes and a stiffer suspension compared to the V6 models.We are all about performance sedans, so we wasted no time in getting behind the wheel. Under the hood is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 which is conservatively rated at 370 hp and 396 lb-ft of torque. Behind that is an 8-speed automatic aptly tuned for conservative cruising. Earlier this year we spent a week with the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT 392, and since it bests my R/T in every department except price, I will condense my experience into the pertinent details.This is the first year for electric power steering, and it makes easy work of aiming the eight-inch wide wheels while returning almost no feedback to the driver. Controls on the steering wheel have all major systems at your fingertips while outside disturbances are of no concern thanks to extensive insulation. In traffic, their smallest V8 offers a classic HEMI soundtrack, and with almost 400 lb-ft of torque the R/T can overtake almost everything else on the road. Since this car is equally tuned for economy and speed, the 3.07 rear differential leaves room for improvement. The eight-speed automatic offers multiple gear downshifts with little hesitation, but the six-speed manual from the Challenger would be a welcomed offering. Just a few years ago a highway rating of 25 mpg would seem unthinkable for a large V8 sedan, but we averaged over 20 even after a few spirited starts. Our R/T was RWD, but AWD is now available as well. With traction and stability disabled, the tires erupt in a classic fashion with no axle hop or unsettling motions.On the inside we found all the latest in safety and connectivity, which comes along with the Technology Group. It adds $3,000 over the base model, but we deem it a necessity. Beats Audio and Adaptive Cruise along with Lane Keeping Assist make the R/T completely capable as a daily driver. Red and black leather adorn most surfaces, cut in a pattern that accentuates the driver-focused layout.The 2015 Dodge Charger R/T stands as a sensible alternative to overpowered sedans, and at $43,995 it offers all the convenience and technology of any other car in this price bracket along with venerable HEMI power. This is a proven formula for a fun sedan, and with a 100,000 mile warranty, the R/T is the sensible choice that won’t break the bank.Gallery

3 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcats Come Out to Play

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. Just saying its name is enough to send a shockwave of excitement into the air among American muscle enthusiasts.With a starting price of $59,995, we named it "Best Bang for the Buck" in our 2015 Exotic Car Buyers Guide. We've seen its power set brake pads on fire and Dodge had to halt orders in March because demand was so overwhelming.The 6.2-liter supercharged hemi V8 is capable of producing an insane 707 hp and 650 lb-ft, launching it to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.6 seconds. So what do you do when you have three of these beasts at your disposal?Take 'em out, close off a few roads, hit the asphalt and burn as much rubber as possible, of course. 2016 Viper ACR Review & Test Drive from Autoblog

Our friends at Autoblog got their hands on the new 2016 Viper ACR and became properly acquainted with the new car at the Virginia International Raceway.In a review posted July 17, you can vicariously experience Dodge’s latest slithery supercar without dropping $121,990. It may be the least civilized car on the market, but with 645 hp and 600 lb-ft, its 8.4-liter V10 takes no prisoners and has no provision for an automatic transmission. Devoid of all creature comforts except air conditioning, the Viper ACR is a tire murderer dressed in carbon fiber. Images of the car were posted to their Facebook page one July 17 and can be found below.Its top speed was listed at 177 mph when introduced May 8, and when it hits that speed, the downforce created reaches nearly a ton. Of course, the brakes required an intense upgrade to stop that much power - new Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes make use of the largest brake pad area ever seen on a Viper.They are built by hand, so the initial production models will sell for a premium. Matte Finishes Added to the Viper 1 of 1 Program

Since orange is the new black, Viper is offering both in matte. In a press release dated June 19, Fiat-Chrysler announced the expansion of Dodge’s 1 of 1 Viper customization program.The curves of a Viper’s exterior look great with a mile-deep glossy finish, but they are betting that a few buyers might want something more unique. Exterior finishes have been doubled to 16,000 total, making for 48,000 possible stripe combinations. Also new are Satin Chrome and Satin Black finishes for the fuel filler and Viper badges. An example of how extensive the Viper 1 of 1 program is.Because the Viper is one of the few cars still painted by hand, adding a custom touch can be done without retooling and retraining a robot. In another nod to traditional craftsmanship, cars not receiving a matte finish are wet-sanded by hand to a mirror shine.These new options allow for an incredible 50 million unique ways to build a Viper, and an unprecedented level of customer involvement in the building of American supercars. SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo Details Released

It's a look at where Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) could be in 20 years, but if you have the right equipment, you can drive it long before 2035. Released in full detail June 2 is the SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo Concept car from FCA, a creation created specially for the video game Gran Turismo 6. The result of an internal design competition at FCA where every employee was encouraged to participate, the concept comes from a basis of existing designs and technologies while simultaneously projecting their evolution over the next two decades. As the press release from FCA tells us, this concept features a hybrid powertrain with a wide-angle V10 powering the rear of the car, and a pneumatic driven front. The combined power of these two systems is said to be up to 2,590 hp, with 2,168 coming from the V10 alone. But with the heavy use of graphene throughout the design, its weight is projected to be just 1,658 pounds, creating a power-to-weight ratio of 1.56 hp/pound. There are nine active aerodynamic panels, including an underbody splitter, that actively steer the SRT Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo through the air and help the vehicle corner at extreme speeds.Of course, since this vehicle is exclusively available through unlocking certain online achievements in Gran Turismo 6, there are three performance levels available. The entry-level Tomahawk Vision Gran Turismo S only delivers 1,007 hp with a higher weight of 2,026 pounds. The second level is the Tomahawk Vision GTS-R adds race tuning and cuts weight, increasing power to 1,450 hp and decreasing curb weight to 1,459. The redline is set at 14,500 rpm, and a top speed of 404 mph can be reached.
