McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Few Hollywood collectors have pursued exotic cars with the same intensity as Nicolas Cage. Over the years, the ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ star’s garage has included Lamborghini Diablos, a Murciélago Roadster, a rare Lamborghini Miura SVJ once built for the Shah of Iran, and several Ferraris ranging from classics like the 250 GT Spyder to the mid-engine exotics like the Enzo, pre-war Bugattis, Porsches, Jaguars, and, of course, American muscle. Now one of his former Lamborghinis has come to market. A 2003 Murciélago previously owned by Cage is currently live on duPont REGISTRY Live, finished in Giallo Orion over a Nero Perseus and Giallo Taurus leather interior. Cage is one of the most recent owners of record, acquiring the car in October 2025 and selling it in February 2026 after a brief four-month ownership. The Murciélago arrived at a pivotal moment in Lamborghini history. Designed by Luc Donckerwolke and developed under Volkswagen Group ownership, it replaced the Diablo designed by the great Marcello Gandini, while ushering Lamborghini into a new era of engineering and global relevance. Despite modernized underpinnings, the Murciélago retained the raw character defining Lamborghini's V12 lineage: scissor doors, a naturally aspirated V12 mounted behind the cabin, all-wheel drive, and one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the era. This first-generation example carries one of the most desirable configurations on the platform: a factory 6-speed gated manual transmission. Lamborghini delivered approximately 316 examples in this specification to the United States between 2001 and 2006. Unlike later e-gear examples, the open-gate transmission adds a level of mechanical involvement that has made factory manual Murciélagos like this one increasingly desirable among serious collectors. <- Gallery -> The exterior features the Murciélago's signature deployable side air intakes, dual exhaust outlets, and multi-piece Speedline Corsa alloy wheels finished in silver, while inside, Nero Perseus leather is paired with bold Giallo Taurus accents across the seats, dashboard, and center console. The invoice trail runs through Lamborghini Las Vegas, where Cage brought the car immediately after purchase for a pre-purchase inspection and subsequently commissioned a comprehensive major service completed in February 2026 at 44,430 miles. The repair order totaled over $62,000 and covered a full clutch replacement, spark plugs, fuel and cabin filters, front and rear brake pads, serpentine belt, coolant hoses, fuel pressure regulators, full fluid services, and installation of an aftermarket Fabspeed exhaust system. As for the Murciélago itself, this is the sixth example to appear on duPont REGISTRY Live. The last car to close on the platform was the considerably rarer 1-of-26 2007 LP 640 Factory Gated Manual previously owned by YouTuber DDE, which hammered at $778,000. This earlier 6.2-liter coupe, though, is a different proposition altogether, and while the gated manual transmission and the Giallo paint connect both cars, it is the celebrity ownership that further elevates this example’s appeal. RUF RCT EVO Sweeps the Week as a Holy Trinity Hypercar Headlines the Upcoming Docket on duPont REGISTRY Live

The week ending May 23rd delivered several noteworthy results across 16 lots on duPont REGISTRY Live, led by consignments from the Porsche world. As we have noted in recent weeks, the German marque is consistently one of the top performers on the platform, and this week was no exception, headlined by a RUF EVO that crossed the seven-figure mark. Over recent months, the docket has reflected an increasingly diverse mix of automobiles, from mid-engined exotics to restomod off-roaders, all finding new owners. Here are the highlights from the past seven days and what to expect in the week ahead, including a Holy Trinity hypercar we spotlighted previously Lots Closed: Highlights The defining result was the 1994 RUF RCT EVO Wide Body, carrying a W09 VIN and numbers-matching specification, which entered last week's docket at a $4,000 opening bid and hammered at $983,000 ($1,032,150 with Buyer's Premium). The W09 designation identifies this as a factory-built RUF rather than a Porsche conversion, a distinction that carries significant weight among air-cooled collectors. Staying with Porsche, a 1995 911 Gunther Werks 400R Greenwich Commission, crossed the digital block at approximately $752,777. One of just 25 examples built to 400R specification, this is the car that set the Laguna Seca lap record for air-cooled Porsches, with professional racing driver Randy Pobst at the wheel. Other Porsche highlights that closed this week included a 2024 911 GT3 Touring at $247,000, a 2026 911 GTS Spirit 70 at $230,000, and a 2024 Targa 4 GTS at $196,000 via the platform's 2-Hour Flash Sale format. The 1993 Ferrari 512 TR Spider, documented as a 1-of-1 coachbuilt example with Saudi Royal Family provenance, went under the hammer at $650,000. The result affirms the premium commanded by extremely rare bespoke Spider configurations over coupe examples. For some context, the duPont REGISTRY Index (dRi) value for the 512 TR coupe is $255,000. The Gen-1 Ford GT is another mid-engine exotic to watch. A 2006 Ford GT with 3,315 original miles from a single owner crossed the block at $517,000, above its dRi Value of $476,150. Limited to just 4,038 examples, the first-generation Ford GT carried a sticker price of $140k when new (~$240k inflation adjusted). Sticking with mid-engined exotics, a 2014 Ferrari 458 Speciale in Bianco Avus hammered at $377,000 ($395,850 with Buyer's Premium). while a 2018 Lamborghini Huracan Performante with a 1,200-horsepower twin-turbo V10 went under the hammer at $272,000 ($285,600 with Buyer's Premium). On the restomod side, A 1972 Chevrolet K5 Blazer by Relic Custom hammered at $127,500, showing sustained demand on the platform for highly specified aftermarket builds. Upcoming Lots: Highlights <- Gallery -> Looking ahead, we have 16 exquisite automobiles in the docket, led by the first Porsche halo car to feature on the platform. A 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder showing 420 miles and specified with the lightweight Weissach Package. One of 918 produced and the closing chapter of Porsche's naturally aspirated hypercar era alongside the LaFerrari, and the McLaren P1, which also closed on duPont REGISTRY Live a week back at $2.3 million. This makes the 918 Spyder, the second holy trinity consignment on duPont REGISTRY Live. Weissach-equipped examples carry a premium over standard 918s, and this particular example, finished in Guard's Red, also carries factory Sonderwunsch options. Currently bid to $2,800,000 with nine days of bidding remaining, this lot carries meaningful upside. Beyond the 918, two Porsche 911 GT3 RS packing Mezger power are also watching closely: a 2010 GT3 RS (997.2) in Carrera White and Guards Red at $250,000 with seven days remaining, and a 2007 GT3 RS (997.1) black over orange example listed late yesterday and currently sitting at $100,000. A 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series in AMG Magmabeam, showing 925 miles, is currently bidding to $303,500 with five days remaining. Last week's Project One result of $604,000 provides a useful reference, though differences in specifications will drive the final number. The 1992 Ferrari 512 TR finished in the rare Argento Metallizzato with a gated manual sits at $65,000 with six days remaining, offering a contrast to last week's 1-of-1 Spider that hammered at $682,500 and a more accessible entry into the 512 TR market. However, it is worth noting that this particular specification is extremely rare globally, and of the 2,200+ units, it is believed that only six silver examples were imported to the United States, with only three paired with the Nero interior, like this example. Expanding on classics, we have a meticulously restored 1963 Jaguar XKE Series I Coupe, a first for the platform currently bid to $45,000, and a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Splitwindow L84 with Rochester fuel injection at $111,000, with three days of bidding left on both. Porsche's Halo Hypercar Leads a Week Packed With Rare Classic Metal on duPont REGISTRY Live

duPont REGISTRY Live has established itself as a premier destination for significant collector cars, with its 14-day return policy and 100 percent sell-through rate setting it apart from the broader online auction market. The roster of exquisite automobiles being consigned on the platform continues to evolve, and there is no shortage of interesting metal in the docket this week. The following four listings certainly stand out: yet another hybrid supercar from the Holy Trinity series, two platform firsts, and one of the most coveted drivetrains in American classic collecting. 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder #322 of 918 produced worldwide, this 918 Spyder is finished in Guards Red over a Garnet Red leather interior with silver piping and extensive carbon fiber trim throughout the cockpit and acid green accents throughout to highlight the e-hybrid tech. Exotics Lead Weekly Results on duPont REGISTRY Live

The week ending May 16th produced a broad spread of results on duPont REGISTRY Live, with limited-production exotics, American muscle, and purpose-built custom builds all crossing the digital block. From a 1-of-40 AMG benchmark to a teal Japan-commissioned RWB Porsche and more, the week reflected the expanding range of collector demand shaping the digital platform. Lots Closed: Highlights The headline result was the 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series Project One. Complete with F1-inspired livery in Petronas colors, this car is one of just 40 built worldwide that was offered exclusively to AMG One customers. Showing 1,840 miles, which hammered it at $604,000 ($634,200 with Buyer's Premium) across 92 bids. This figure is in line with its duPont REGISTRY Index (dRi) value. Among the rarest road-going AMG products ever built, this result reflects its categorical scarcity relative to a standard GT Black Series. A 2017 Lamborghini Aventador SV Roadster, one of 500 produced and showing 21,170 miles, crossed the digital block at $571,000 ($599,550 with Buyer's Premium). As the naturally aspirated V12 era recedes further from production, demand for supercars like the SV Roadster continues to hold firm. The Viper market continues to stay consistent on the platform. The 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme in Competition Blue, showing 3,535 miles, drew the highest bid count of the week at 100 total bids before hammering at $422,000 ($443,100 with Buyer's Premium). With the nameplate discontinued, values on clean ACR Extreme examples have trended upward consistently. Two other Vipers crossed the block in the same week: a 1997 Hennessey Venom 600 cleared at $76,230 and a 2006 SRT-10 at $73,500. That gap reflects a market stratifying clearly by rarity and track focus, with collectors increasingly precise about which tier they are buying into. The 2013 Ferrari 458 Italia in Grigio Silverstone went under the hammer at $294,000 ($308,700 with Buyer's Premium), in line with where well-specified naturally aspirated 458s have been trading as the turbocharged era matures around them. Modified exotics continued to find homes. A 1997 Ferrari 355 Spider in Liberty Walk widebody guise on air ride crossed the digital block at $167,475, while a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera built by RWB and Nakai San in Japan, finished in teal and showing 102,653 miles, hammered at $200,000 ($210,000 with Buyer's Premium). Despite only 15 bids, the RWB drew 4,244 auction views. Both results reflect a growing cohort treating heavily modified exotics as a distinct collector category. Japanese performance and collector cars, in fact, are finding consistent homes on a platform historically dominated by European metal and American muscle. A 2000 Nissan Stagea Autech with an HKS 2800 crate engine crossed the digital block at $58,000 ($60,900 with Buyer's Premium), continuing the trajectory set by last week's result, where a 2001 Acura Integra Type-R closed at $65,507. The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 in Jet Black Metallic with the Sport Chrono Package, Stealth PPF, and PCCBs hammered at $215,500 ($226,275 with Buyer's Premium), and the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren with the exclusive Silver Arrow Red interior crossed the digital block at $258,595 ($271,525 with Buyer's Premium). The 2024 Jaguar F-Type R 75 Final Edition, one of just 150 built and showing 500 miles, crossed the digital block at $83,100 ($87,255 with Buyer's Premium) after 64 bids. Listed on the platform the prior week at a $5,500 opening bid, the result is a precise illustration of what No Reserve auctions do at their most effective. Upcoming Lots: Highlights <- Gallery -> 15 cars currently occupy the docket, going into Week three of May. The most compelling lot in the current docket is a Lorenz & Rankl coachbuilt 1993 Ferrari 512 TR Spider, documented as a 1-of-1 example with Saudi Royal Family provenance. Currently bid at $400,000 with two days remaining, the Spider is substantially rarer than the coupe, and one-of-one royal provenance elevates this example well beyond comparable results. The closest comparison in collector car history is the one-off silver Pininfarina Testarossa Spider commissioned for Gianni Agnelli in 1986, produced by Ferrari. The 512 TR Spider occupies the same space: a bespoke configuration on a flagship Ferrari, built for a single patron, carrying provenance that cannot be replicated. The current figure of $400,000, with two days remaining, is unlikely to be where this lot ends. Four Porsches are currently listed across multiple tiers. The 1995 Gunther Werks 400R Greenwich Commission leads at $621,000 with five days remaining. One of just 25 examples built to 400R specification with a Rothsport Racing 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six and full carbon fiber body, this is a noteworthy 993-based restomod as it is the car that set and still holds the air-cooled Porsche lap record at Laguna Seca. The 2026 Porsche 911 GTS Spirit 70, one of 1,500 produced and showing 470 miles, sits at $225,000, while a 2024 911 GT3 Touring with 8,230 miles and the Chrono Package is at $132,000. This past weekend, Porsche Platica returned to Knoxville, Tennessee, for its third running year. Where the Carrera GT was the show-stopper last year, this year it was the 911R as the event's focus this year, as the model celebrates 10 years. Five early model 911Rs from 1967 were also present. We brought along a very special car: a Gunther Werks 400R finished in Greenwich Green over a terracotta interior, on gold Fuchs wheels, and it will soon be available on duPont REGISTRY Live. This is not just any 400R. Professional racing driver Randy Pobst piloted this exact car to a Laguna Seca lap record for air-cooled Porsches, posting a time of 1:30.99, which is just two-tenths of a second off the McLaren P1. The car comes with a second spoiler and a signed front trunk lid, complete with a scratch from the record run itself. <- Gallery -> Handbuilt in Huntington Beach in Orange County, California, the 400R is built on a stripped 993-generation 911 chassis, the widebody with extensive use of carbon fiber, tips the scales at just over 2,650 pounds. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter air-cooled flat-six producing 435 horsepower, sent through a six-speed manual transmission. It is, by every measure, an analog exercise in obsession: no driver aids, hydraulic steering, and KW Clubsport coilovers tuned for feel over forgiveness. With only 25 examples ever produced, each built to individual customer specification, the 400R occupies rarefied territory. This Greenwich example is one of the most visually arresting color combinations in the run, and it will be offered on the platform for the first time.
