McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Almost a year in the making, our two week Arizona adventure was one for the record books. Now that the jet-leg has worn off, let's take a look at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2019 Results. We couldn't do this without the support of our clients, so let's hear it for Airstream for arriving in their latest Interstate EXT. Lexani is the undisputed leader in aftermarket wheels, so they brought a few dozen new designs. In addition to their display, they shipped in the same Rolls-Royce Ghost we had on display at the Orange County Auto Show, now rolling on gorgeous 24" forged beauties. Their other ride is a Mercedes-AMG GT-C that is just as mouthwatering. Brand New Muscle Car's 1969 Yenko Camaro Continuation is an officially-licensed Yenko, correct in every detail. Ronald McDonald House Charities was also on-hand, selling raffle tickets to a new Corvette Z06 to help families in need. Celebrity Cars Las Vegas showcased an Ornata Spitfire, a modern American roadster that is built to order. Vanderhall Motor Works' impressive three-wheelers are fast & fuel efficient, so they displayed a speedster and a roadster for comparison. duPont REGISTRY Event Coordinator Matt Dixon Sporting Robert Graham Robert Graham supplied us with snazzy apparel, and we appreciate the looks and quality of their lineup. XPEL protective film displayed a Porsche 911 GT2 RS, courtesy of Graham Rahal, completely covered in their premium protectants. CNC Exotics took center stage with a Pagani Huayra Roadster along with a Koenigsegg Agera, & LaFerrari behind velvet ropes. Z-Clip offers the latest in RFID blocking carbon fiber wallets, and they can be custom made for you. Tire Stickers was on hand to show off their tire customization applications that turn boring tires into statements. So now we turn our attention to the hospitality extended by the W Scottsdale hotel. For the 5th consecutive year, we threw a party that remains unrivaled in the automotive world. It was a late night on Friday, as many guests stayed with us until 2 am. Greeting guests were a selection of high-end cars from Mclaren Scottsdale and Scottsdale Ferrari. It was all in anticipation of the Saturday night highlights. The sponsor tent was cleared as everyone tried to get a glimpse of the Shelby GT500. It was purchased by Craig Jackson, Barrett-Jackson's CEO for $1.1 Million. Not only the highest bid ever placed on a new Mustang, all proceeds also went to help Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The other fancy Ford was a Heritage Edition Ford GT, with the high bid going to Rick Hendrick.

Ronald McDonald House Charities raffles a new and classic Corvette every year to help families of sick children, so spend a few dollars and you might be looking at your dream car. Vanderhall Motor Works builds the ultimate American three-wheeler, and we will have two examples on display. Nothing protects your paint like Xpel protective film, and they will have a Porsche 911 GT2 RS completely covered in the amazing transparent composite. Our friends at CNC Exotics will have a Pagani Huayra Roadster along with a LaFerrari behind velvet ropes. Celebrity Cars Las Vegas will be showcasing an Ornata Spitfire, a modern American roadster that is built to order. Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2018 Recap

For their final auction of the 2018 Season, Barrett-Jackson had the hottest action on the Las Vegas Strip. Our booth was next to Shelby American, and we were able to enjoy the event with old friends. The 3-day event came to an end Saturday night, with a record total of $32.9 Million in sales. With a sell-through rate of 100%, Craig Jackson and his team found new homes for 733 cars and 400 pieces of automobilia.Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2018 PreviewCelebrities and athletes pushed prices to unprecedented levels. This was easily seen in a 1997 Acura Integra Type R that sold for $63,800. Other highlights included a Porsche 918 for $1.76 Million and a 2018 McLaren 720S for $352,000. A 1999 example of the Shelby Series1 sold for $205,000, shocking everyone in the crowd! We couldn't do this without our clients, so Fusion Luxury Motors displayed a Corvette-powered Defender next to their new line of aircraft-inspired furniture. Their other stunner was a Widebody Ferrari 488 GTB. Lamborghini of Las Vegas allowed us to display a new Huracan Performante next to a new Aventador, and Ronald McDonald House was selling raffle tickets to their wild 1969 Camaro. A new Vanderhall Venice Speedster next to a new Airstream Interstate allowed us to offer something for everyone. Our hats are off to Z-Clip and Tire Stickers.com who has been supporting our events for years. This marks the end of Barrett-Jackson's 47th year in the business and it only gets bigger every year. Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach 2018 Recap

Everyone knows Scottsdale is Barrett-Jackson's biggest auction. But if we had to choose a favorite, Palm Beach is fueled by our friends & clients in South Florida. The results are in, and this year's event saw $39.4 Million in sales and charity roll across the block.The press release on their homepage says 692 cars found new homes, and a record 700 new bidders joined in on the fun. If you know anything about classic car collectors, you have probably heard of John Staluppi. He and his wife Jeanette own the Cars of Dreams Museum in North Palm Beach. They like to keep the collection ever-changing, so they decided to divest of 145 cars, a fraction of their private collection. They were lined up in a parade to kick off the bidding on Thursday, and their primetime sales totaled $13.96 Million.“Our guests have made the Palm Beach Auction such an electrifying event year after year,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We were especially honored to be trusted to auction three incredible collections, including the ‘Cars of Dreams’ owned by our good friends Jeanette and John Staluppi. Their 145 vehicles, which all sold at No Reserve, represented some of the finest examples of ’50s-, ’60s- and ’70s-era American cars. Our buddies at Bruiser Conversions never disappoint, so they brought the latest in Wrangler-based trucks. The Honcho is stretched by over 2 feet and the entire frame is gusseted and reinforced to handle 42" tires and LS3 power.Excel Auto Group arrived in a stunning McLaren 720S, and these rare supercars took the crowd by surprise. Vanderhall Motor Works builds the latest in American 3-wheelers using GM turbo-four cylinder engines and automatic transmissions for an efficient cruise. Hummer1.com restores the Hummer H1 Alpha to better-than-new condition, and they brought a tan example with serious upgrades. Front and center was Ronald McDonald House, who are selling raffle tickets for their December drawing. Choose from a resto-mod '67 Camaro, numbers-matching 62 Corvette, or a new Corvette Carbon 65, all proceeds go to fund their facilities. Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2018 Results in Massive Money

Barrett-Jackson's 2018 Scottsdale auction was without a doubt an incredible success for the company, the bidders, consigners, guests and the charities who were benefited by some of the lots. After everything was said and done, 1,721 cars were sold for more than $106.8 million with a sell-through rate of 99.1 percent. What's more, an additional $6.21 million was raised by charity vehicles like the pair of Corvettes, Ford GT and first 2019 Bullitt Mustang.Sure, the cars were cool, but there were also a lot of stars at the event. Former President George W. Bush attended the event and stood on the block during the auction of the 2018 Corvette Carbon 65 Edition. Other celebrities included Jay Leno, Michael Phelps, Kenny Chesney, David Spade, Tim Allen, Alice Cooper, Bruce Arians, Alan Williams, Archie Bradley and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. It was, without a doubt, a star-studded event. Former President George W. Bush at the podium.Being such a coveted event, duPont REGISTRY attended the event in full-force. I don't want to jump to any assumptions, but I'd say our booth was one of the highlights of the auction. Why? Lined up next to each other was a Koenigsegg CCX (iLusso), Lamborghini Centenario (McLaren Scottsdale), and Pagani Huayra (Pagani Newport Beach)... and that wasn't all. Joining this trio were a number of other cars as well, including a Starke Speedster, Bruiser Conversions' Jeep, Airstream Sprinter, Porsche 911 GT3 RS (iLusso), Bentley Continental GT Speed (Lexani x Wheel Specialists Inc.), two Vanderhall Venice cars, Corvette Carbon 65 Edition with Callaway supercharger kit (Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Valley), and a Land Rover Defender (Fusion Luxury Motors). Tire Stickers was also in our booth to show off their completely customizable tire lettering for sidewalls. duPont REGISTRY Live At Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas

This weekend marks ten years of Barrett-Jackson's Las Vegas Collector Car Auction. Taking place at Mandalay Bay, the opening day was filled with somber moments and record attendance. In order to honor the fallen in the recent tragedy, several high-profile builders and dealers offered their first lots to local charities.Day one started off with "Automobilia". Hundreds of vintage signs, accessories and beautiful gas pumps were sold for no reserve. In order to support UNLV's Emergency Residency Program, a group of seven cars has been set aside as "Cars For A Cause". The first two went across yesterday with 100% of proceeds going to the UNLV Foundation. A new Jeep Wrangler Red Rocks Edition was donated by Mike Helton, Chaiman of the NASCAR Foundation. Equipped with Dana 44 axles front and rear, it was built to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Moab Easter Safari. It hammered for $100,000. Next up was a new Chevy Silverado with a few custom touches from Count's Kustoms. Donated by Chevrolet, it has several tasteful upgrades and includes a new motorcycle built by the Count. The wild pair also sold for $100,000The other important event yesterday was building our booth. We couldn't do these shows without the support of our clients and we thank them for bringing their best for us to display. First in was US Specialty Vehicles with the beastly Rhino GX.Lamborghini Las Vegas arrived with a white Aventador and the stunning Huracan Performante. Fusion Luxury Motors arrived in an LS-powered Land Rover Defender. I had the opportunity to showcase it at the Orange County Auto Show, and it combines the best of American power with Land Rover's Time-Tested design. Their centerpiece is the 1967 Mustang Eleanor, an official reproduction of the hero car from "Gone in 60 Seconds". Next in was Gateway Bronco. They specialize in restoring & modernizing first-generation Broncos. Adding modern conveniences makes these classics appeal to a new generation.Vanderhall Motor Works brought two of their latest builds. The Venice and the Laguna are American three-wheelers with fuel-efficient front wheel drive. Airstream brought a new Interstate RV, appointed with all the luxuries you could ever ask for. Powered by a Mercedes turbo-diesel, it is among the only full-size RV's to achieve 20 mpg.See the object in the center? We will be unveiling it at 1pm Eastern Time today. Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach 2016 Recap

Last week we told you about some of the exciting listings for Barrett-Jackson's annual auto auction extravaganza in West Palm Beach. It is a great way for us to connect with our clients and to show duPont REGISTRY enthusiasts the power of print and event marketing.Normally our only apprehensions about this show come from the unpredictable weather. But, this year it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. We hosted the VIP Pavilion, which featured all the high-end and Salon cars that headlined a very successful auction weekend.Our mobile chill lounge happens inside the Airstream Interstate, so it was moved in first. With seating for nine and WiFi, they are the perfect way for us to stay cool & connected during the show. North Trail RV brought a new 2016 model which has Air Ride suspension and more USB ports than you will ever need.Front and foremost was the Ruf Nek from Starwood Motors. Built for SEMA 2015, this radical rat rod Wrangler trades civility for a 6.4L 392 HEMI V8 riding on air suspension. Bomber seats and teak wood compliment the Alpine/Focal, which tries hard to be louder than the stainless side pipe exhaust.Taggart Autosport participated with a custom Jeep Wrangler and a 2013 Aston Martin Rapide S. Two additional Jeeps arrived from California Custom Sport Trucks. One was customized by Guy Harvey, complete with an aquatic wrap and fishing rods.Ronald McDonald House of the Central Valley is a charity that provides a respite for families of sick children, so we enjoy supporting their collector car raffles. Ticket sales exceeded expectations thanks to the new Corvette Z06 convertible along with a Superformance Cobra.If four wheels are too many, Vanderhall sent us their latest Laguna for the weekend. These tandem two-seaters are powered by the 1.4L turbo EcoTec four cylinder from Chevrolet. From heated seats to stability control, Laguna packs more features than any vehicle its size.Towering over the tiny roadster were the brilliant polished stainless & marble grills from Kalamazoo Gourmet. Hand fabricated from thick 304 alloy, their top end outdoor kitchens include a sizable pizza oven. On the other end of the temperature scale, Sovaro Coolers allowed us to realize that natural cork is still the best insulator on the market.We were able to facilitate several sales from the booth, and we had a great time interacting with our fans.As for the sales from the auction, Barrett-Jackson touted in a press release that they had exceed $23.2 million at the Palm Beach event. Contributing to this amount were a few top sales, such as a 1969 Ford Boss 429 ($550,000), two Heritage Edition Ford GTs ($467,500 and $412,500) and much more. The first 2017 Corvette Grand Sport sold for $170,000 and the first 2017 Camaro 50th Anniversary sold for $150,000. First 2017 Corvette Grand Sport and 50th Anniversary Cama...

In an unprecedented move Barrett-Jackson is set to break records and turn heads at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction thanks to the auctioning of the first 2017 Corvette Grand Sport and 50th Anniversary Camaro on April 8. Barrett-Jackson is known for their sizable contributions to charities both local to their auction locations and those with a nationwide base. Most recently, they auctioned off the first 2017 Acura NSX, which, in conjunction with ten other vehicles, brought in an incredible $3.4 million for charity.Acura NSX For Sale Thanks to Chevrolet's generous donation of the inaugural production installment of the 2017 Corvette Grand Sport, Barrett-Jackson is keeping with tradition and will auction the vehicle off. One-hundred percent of the funds raised will benefit the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute-- "one of only 45 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country," according to GM. The 2017 Corvette Grand Sport, Vin #001, is scheduled for auction in Palm Beach, Fla. on Friday, April 8.On Saturday, April 9, the iconic 2017 Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition is set for auction, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the United Way of Southeastern Michigan.
