McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The date and location for the first-ever Rétromobile USA, which will complement the iconic annual Salon Rétromobile classic car exhibition in Europe, has been announced in Paris, France, today. New York City’s Javits Center is the venue, from 19 to 22 November 2026, which will host an unmissable celebration of vintage and collector cars. For almost 50 years, Rétromobile has brought major automotive manufacturers together at the world-famous Expo Porte de Versailles with classic car exhibitors, collectors, sellers, auction houses, event organizers, restorers, coachbuilders, components and automobilia vendors, star industry names and professionals, plus over 120,000 visitors across its five-day event. When it comes to the crème de la crème of classic automotive excellence, it doesn’t get better than this. A stunning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM has been named winner of the 10th annual The Peninsula Classics ‘Best of the Best’ Award 2024. The Ferrari, chosen from a select group of nine vehicles that won awards at the past year’s major concours events, became eligible for consideration after winning the Best in Show honor at the Cavallino Classic at Palm Beach in January 2024. Presented during an awards ceremony at The Peninsula Paris, the distinction recognizes the pinnacle of classic automotive design and engineering. A panel of 24 esteemed judges, comprising cultural icons and leading automotive experts—including Henry Ford III, Charles March, the Duke of Richmond, Ralph Lauren, Jay Leno, Nick Mason, Shiro Nakamura, and Jean Todt—recognized the Ferrari 250 LM’s historical, aesthetic, and sporting significance. Featuring a body styled by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, it was intended as the successor to the legendary 250 GTO. Though Ferrari was unable to secure GT-class homologation for the model, the 250 LM still enjoyed remarkable success, including its landmark victory at Le Mans in 1965 and the International Trophy for GT Prototypes the same year. One of only 32 examples ever produced, this particular 250 LM had a distinguished racing career between 1965 and 1967, with notable wins at Brands Hatch, Snetterton, and Silverstone in 1966. It also competed in two of endurance racing’s most iconic events—the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1966 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968. “I am truly honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Chris Cox, owner of the 1964 Ferrari 250 LM. “It brings me immense joy to showcase a vehicle with such a rich history at the world’s foremost concours events. In 2022, it was exhibited at the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena, Italy, as part of the ‘Ferrari Forever’ 75th-anniversary showcase. It has also graced the lawns of premier concours events, including the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and, most recently, Casa Ferrari at Pebble Beach in 2024, commemorating Ferrari’s 70th anniversary in the United States. “The winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM is more than just a stunning vehicle,” said Christian Philippsen, co-founder of The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award. “It represents one of Ferrari’s most revolutionary models, boasting an unparalleled competitive legacy and impeccable provenance. New Ferrari F80 Hypercar Stars At 2025 Cavallino Classic

The world’s most important gathering to celebrate the Ferrari marque, the Cavallino Classic, welcomed the newest member of its hypercar dynasty, the F80, to its majestic show lawns in Palm Beach Florida to make its North American public debut across the weekend. The 1,200-hp F80 represents the pinnacle of Ferrari’s automotive innovation and performance, following in the footsteps of Prancing Horse legends such as the 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari. Cavallino Classic returned to South Florida for its 34th annual event celebrating the beauty, speed, history, and art of all things Ferrari. Collectors from all continents gathered alongside thousands of experts, enthusiasts, and tastemakers of all ages to celebrate Ferrari’s excellence. Since 1992, the Cavallino Classic has served as the temple of the preservation of Enzo Ferrari’s legacy. It also featured Enzo Mattioli Ferrari, the great-grandson of Enzo Ferrari, joining the Cavallino organization. Interviewed on the main stage of the show, Enzo said of the cars on display: “When I came here the first time in 1998 with my grandfather and my father , I was already very impressed by the magnitude of the event. That I grew up with it, year after year, to me it's really, really romantic to link myself being here today and my great grandfather giving the blessing at the time to the Cavallino magazine. “What’s special is that every single car here has a different story. The story of its preservation, that part of being the custodian of something, it gives you the uniqueness of the brand, and the uniqueness of the cars themselves. Modena Cento Ore 2024 Recap: A Challenging and Exciting F...

AC Shelby Cobra 289, Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR, BMW 328 Roadster, and Porsche 911 RS took the top podium spots at the Modena Cento Ore, which concluded in Modena. The four-day event, featuring special stages on closed roads and track races, was yet another resounding success, drawing participants from across the globe. With the weather alternating between storms and sudden sunshine, the 2024 edition of the Modena Cento Ore was even more challenging and exciting. The event started in Rimini and, after circuit races and special stages on closed roads, concluded in Modena, illuminated by the sun, with the cars cutting the finish line in front of the Palazzo Ducale and with the prizegiving ceremony and final party. Over the course of four days, the competing cars tackled the tough roads of the Apennines in Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany, discovering Italian gems like San Marino, Arezzo, Forlì and Florence. Adding to the spectacle races at the Misano, both daytime and nighttime, and Mugello circuits, offering a thrilling spectacle for spectators, who warmly welcomed the extraordinary cars and their crews along the streets, in town squares, and at the circuits. There isn’t a single winner at the Modena Cento Ore as it is open to cars between the 30s and the 80s, that can participate in the “Competition” or “Regularity” section. The challenge was fierce over the four days in all the categories. In the Competition category, the “pre-1965” classification (open to cars belonging to FIA periods D, E and F) was won by the 1964 AC Shelby Cobra of Swiss-German crew Michael and Peter Hinderer, followed by the 1960 Ferrari 250 Berlinetta SWB Competizione driven by Roderick and Elizabeth Jack from the UK, and the 1965 Lotus Elan 26R piloted by Martin Eyears and Amanda Stretton, also from the UK. Meanwhile, the 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 RSR driven by the Italian crew Domenico Guagliardo and Giovanni Campeis claimed victory in the G/H/I classification (for cars built from 1966 onwards). Second place went to Kris Rosenberger, Austrian, and Nicola Bleicher, Bavarian, in their 1981 Porsche 911 SC, while the French Mr. John of B and Sibel took third with their 1971 Ferrari 512M, a Sport Prototype car that can be seen on Italian roads only at the Modena Cento Ore. In the special Index of Performance category, where times are adjusted using a coefficient related to the age and performance of each car, the oldest car in the competition made its mark: the 1938 BMW 328 Roadster driven by Albert Otten and Uwe Drange, both from Germany. They were followed by the “brits” Roderick and Elizabeth Jack in their stunning 1960 Ferrari 250 Berlinetta SWB Competizione, while Martin and Susanne Halusa took third in their 1952 Ferrari 212 Export. The Regularity section was just as fiercely contested: Karsten and Patricia Wohlenberg from Germany took first place in their 1972 Porsche 911 RS, followed by Peter Kappeler (Swiss) and Marie Tourneur (French) in a 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint. Third place went to Jakub and Petr Kejdus from the Czech Republic in their stunning 1967 Jaguar MK II. Belgian driver Glenn Janssen was the author of an incredible overtaking at Mugello in a very wet race, at the last corner of the last lap, after 6 laps behind the safety car. Enzo Mattioli Ferrari and his codriver Hussein Kedier had a major chassis breakage and their mechanics had to work overnight and source spare parts from different garages in Italy eventually were back in the game just missing the first special stage of the third leg.There are many good mechanics at the Modena Cento Ore. Just to mention a few more, the incredibly fast gearbox replacement made by Glenn’s team of mechanics in just 7 minutes between Special Stages 6 and 7, or the lightning-fast tire replacement by Lee Jones in Misano. A special thank you to Albert Otten – Uwe Drange and Thomas Kern – Gian-Pietro Rossetti, who bravely challenged the rain in their two open-top cars, a 1939 BMW 328 Roadster and a 1966 AC Shelby Cobra 427 S/C respectively. This year’s event once again featured a strong international presence, with the United Kingdom leading the way with over 60 participants, followed by Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Lebanon, Portugal, Luxembourg, Czech Republic and even far-flung places like the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, Brazil and Zambia, for a total of 20 countries represented in the grids. Renowned for its unique format featuring both circuit races and closed-road stages, the “Cento Ore” is one of the most highly-anticipated events on the international calendar. The lineup will include exceptional cars, seasoned drivers and notable figures, including Fritz Burkard, fresh from his recent victory at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California with his Bugatti Type 59. The 2024 edition of the Modena Cento Ore, the prestigious international event for classic cars born in 2000, which determines its final rankings over four days of track racing and special stages on closed roads, will kick off next Monday, 7 October, after scrutineering in Rimini on Sunday, 6 October. Over the course of the four days, participants will compete in two races at the Misano World Circuit - one of which will take place at night - and another at the Mugello Circuit. Additionally, there will be eleven special stages across Emilia and Tuscany, with the finish in Modena on the afternoon of Thursday, 10 October, in front of the Ducal Palace. The lineup of competing cars is nothing short of remarkable, with participants from 16 countries, led by strong contingents from the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. Many renowned collectors and high-profile personalities will be in attendance, most notably Fritz Burkard, the recent winner at the renowned Pebble Beach Concorso d’Eleganza in California, where he triumphed with his Bugatti Type 59 Sports. The appeal of the Modena Cento Ore stems from several factors. It is one of the few historic races where participants compete both on track and in special stages to determine the final standings. The cars, depending on their year of manufacture, are assigned a coefficient that balances their performance. Secondly, the event offers those who prefer not to take part in speed trials the opportunity to compete as regularity drivers, tackling the same challenging routes. Out of the 100 starters - participation is by invitation only - two-thirds will compete in the speed category, and one-third in regularity. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, a key factor in the event’s success is Italy itself, with its carefully selected routes and stunning landscapes, complemented by the top-quality hotels and dining experiences, all in line with the best traditions of Canossa Events. The cars on the starting grid promise a truly spectacular show: with 22 Ferraris alone, featuring iconic models such as the 250 SWB Competizione and the 308 GTB Michelotto. Notable collectors like Jaime Muldoon and his wife Cecilia Borrego de Muldoon from Mexico will be driving a 250 GT, while another notable collector, Philip Kadoorie from Hong Kong, will take the wheel of a Lancia Stratos Group 4. The lineup also includes various Porsche models from different eras, AC Shelby Cobras, Jaguar E-Types, Lotus Elise and Cortinas, alongside numerous Alfa Romeo GTA and GTAm, and many other exceptional vehicles waiting to be discovered. And for the public? On Sunday, 6 October, cars will be on display all day at Parco Federico Fellini in Rimini. Tuesday starts at 9:00 AM with the second race, again at Misano, followed by a stop in Piazza Aurelio Saffi in Forlì from 11:30 AM. After two special stages, the cars will be on display at Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence from 4:30 PM. On Wednesday, 9 October, after completing various special stages through the Tuscan hills, the cars will return to Florence in the afternoon along the Lungarno Abramo Lincoln. Then, on Thursday, 10 October, the day starts at 9:00 AM with a race at the Mugello Circuit, before the cars continue on to Modena.
