McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Get Ready For Monterey Car Week 2026

We've spent the past year showing up differently, and if you spent any time with us lately, you noticed. Holding more events. Interacting with our readers and fans more than ever before. Offering more services and solutions for the automotive enthusiast. Even breaking world records. That shift is the whole point. duPont REGISTRY Group has always been where the collector world comes to look. Lately we care just as much about where it comes to gather, and nothing gathers this world like Monterey. And for this year, we're meeting you there in person, in a much bigger way. Monterey Car Week 2026 runs August 7 through 16, but we've been counting down for a while. There's too much packed into those ten days to take in all at once, so here are a few of the events we're looking forward to most, as they provide us with exciting opportunities to be present and engage with you all. It opens with the Luxury Rally Club's (LRC) Rally to Car Week, three days from the 10th through the 12th that start in Los Angeles and trace the Pacific Coast Highway north through Malibu and Pismo Beach with a tight group of owners who actually drive their cars. Midweek the Supercar Owners Circle Get Together Monterey pulls together one of the most exclusive rosters anywhere on the 12th and 13th, all curated drives and good company. Then Thursday the 13th brings The Preserve, the invitation-only Concours and Cocktails evening up at Santa Lucia, hosted by LRC. From there it just keeps building. Friday the 14th is The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the garden party on the Quail Lodge lawns where the rarest cars and motorcycles share grass with collectors and the occasional royal. Saturday the 15th is an absolutely loaded day. Exotics on Broadway takes over Seaside as the largest single-day show of the week, wall to wall super, hyper, and exotic metal. Concorso Italiano runs the same day for everyone who lives and breathes Alfa, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati. Then the sun goes down and the Monterey Motorsports Festival lights up the Monterey County Fairgrounds from 5 PM to 11 PM, the biggest open-to-the-public night of the week. Car parades in motion, revving shows, live music, real nightlife energy. It's how Saturday should end. And these are just a few of the events happening all week. For Sunday, of course, there is the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance taking place, an event that should be on every automotive enthusiast's bucket list. If you have never attended, this is something you have to experience at least once. Fair warning: once you go, you'll want to go back the following year. Monterey Car Week is an incredibly special time of the year for us at duPont REGISTRY Group as the entire week revolves around those we cater to. The collectors, the builders, the friends we've made over years of doing this, and they all find their way to Monterey. We want to be right there with them. Showing up bigger this year, across more of the week than ever, comes down to something simple: being present for the conversations, the drives, and the handshakes. There's plenty we can't say just yet, so mark the calendar for August 7 through 16 and keep your eyes right here. Stay tuned, because what we have coming is worth the wait.

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Moves to an Earlier Date...

For decades, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has been held on the third Sunday in August. That changes in 2028 as organizers confirmed that the Concours will move forward by one week, landing on the second Sunday in August. Concours Chairman, Sandra Button, explained that the decision was driven by families who found it difficult to attend as schools across the nation continue to start earlier each August. “Parents want to share their love of cars with their kids, and we want to make that more possible. When we look at the calendars for Pebble Beach, for other Concours, and for other local large events, a simple move forward by one week lessens the conflict for many.” - Sandra Button, Concours Chairman. Button also added that requests for an earlier date were steady and persistent from entrants, judges, volunteers, and spectators alike. This shift has broader implications as Pebble Beach sets the pace for Monterey Car Week. As we saw at an action-packed week this year, several Concours events, charity rallies, and auction houses time their schedules around it. RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Company, Broad Arrow, Mecum and Bonhams all cluster their events around Concours weekend. That means you can expect some shifting of dates across the board. Key Dates to Note: Here’s what the Concours schedule looks like over the next five years: August 16, 2026 August 15, 2027 August 13, 2028 (the first year with the new date) August 12, 2029 August 11, 2030 Historically, the Concours has never been afraid of experimenting with its place on the calendar. The first show took place back in early November 1950. Organizers then tried spring and early summer slots as well, before weather pushed them around again in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In fact, rain forced a cancellation in 1960, which nudged the event back toward summer. However, it wasn’t until 1967 that Pebble Beach finally settled into the fourth Sunday of August, and eventually moving to the third Sunday, a tradition that stuck through the ‘90s and beyond. That long history explains why this change is being treated with such care. The Concours is an institution with ripple effects across the collector car world. If you’re a regular at Car Week, take note: you should be aware that airlines don’t usually release fares more than a year out, but hotels in Carmel and Monterey often book up to two years in advance. Waiting too long will leave you scrambling, or worse, paying inflated last-minute rates. Businesses in Monterey, from restaurants to rental companies, also build staffing plans around the event, and sorting out the logistics. This announcement, coming three years in advance should give the industry enough time to make adjustments. So whether you’re a collector, a spectator, or even just someone who enjoys walking the lawn at Pebble Beach, start planning earlier than you normally would. This move to the second Sunday may sound minor, but it changes the entire dynamic of Monterey Car Week. Monterey Car Week honored automotive history with Rolex's support. Monterey Car Week 2024 was a dream come true for car collectors and enthusiasts, with the Monterey Peninsula buzzing with events celebrating the beauty and history of motoring. Rolex has been a key supporter of these events for over 25 years, kicking off its involvement with the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance® back in 1997. This year's lineup included historic racing, luxury car displays, and the debut of some truly remarkable automotive creations, making it a week filled with excitement for all things on wheels. 2020 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Cancelled

Although there are signs of hope, the largest car show of the year has been canceled. Below is the press release we received last night: PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (April 22, 2020) — Knowing that entrants, judges, volunteers and guests face ongoing health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance have decided to cancel the Show which was scheduled for August 16, 2020. “My heart goes out to all of the people who are involved in the Pebble Beach Concours and who are impacted by this decision,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “Many of our entrants have been working on a special car for years, and this was to be their moment. Some of our overseas entrants were nearing the point of putting their cars on boats and planes, and their own travel arrangements have long been made. The same is true for many of our international cadre of judges.” “We thank all of the enthusiasts who have gathered at Pebble Beach time and again to renew long-standing friendships, celebrate great cars and give so generously to Concours charities — and who have already expressed their support for the coming celebration no matter the date.” The car selection process for the 70th Pebble Beach Concours, which was scheduled for Sunday, August 16, 2020, was recently completed, and entrants were notified of their acceptance earlier this month. The acceptance letters stressed that these cars were invited to appear at the 70th celebration — even if it was delayed. With the cancellation of this year’s event, the 70th Pebble Beach Concours will now take place on Sunday, August 15, 2021. Features will remain as planned, with a display of past Best of Show winners along the edge of Stillwater Cove, and special classes focusing on Pininfarina coachwork, Porsche 917, Talbot-Lago Grand Sport, Miller racing, Iso, Early Electrics and the Carrera Panamericana. “Pebble Beach Company has been pleased to host this event since its beginning, and we look forward to hosting the 70th celebration in 2021,” said Company CEO William L. Perocchi. “This event does more than celebrate great cars; it benefits so many people in need. Ultimately, the continued health and safety of everyone associated with the Concours is our number one priority, which led us to this difficult decision. We recognize that canceling the 2020 Event will be disappointing to many, although we are confident it is appropriate under these unique circumstances.” All tickets purchased to date for the 70th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be valid for the event on Sunday, August 15, 2021. 28th Annual McCall's Motorworks Revival Recap

Our friend Gordon McCall has been gathering the best in cars, aircraft, and luxury for nearly 3 decades. It has evolved into one of the must-see events of Monterey Car Week, and it takes place at the Monterey Jet Center. Starting with the amazing aircraft on display, it was wild to see a B-25 Bomber and P-51 Mustang alongside a Gulfstream G500 and a Cessna Citation Longitude. Also on display were the latest models from Dassault, Pilatus, Piper and Embraer. You probably know we have an affinity for nice watches, so the latest in timepieces were on display from Bremont, Eberhard & Co., H. Moser & Cie., Kerbedanz, Reservoir Watch SA, & Chronoswiss A.G. Cars are the reason for the event, so we were witness to the unveiling of the new Ford GT MKII track car along with the RUF CTR Anniversary supercar. Notable classics included one-of-two 1978 BMW 320 Turbo lightweight racers. We've been a part of car week in Monterey since 1985. With so much to see and do, planning an itinerary can seem overwhelming. That is why we have distilled the week's events into the 10 essential events of the week. You can view them below, ordered in no certain way. Be sure to check out the ones that you can! 10. Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Billed as the largest event of the weekend, Rolex has invited 550 of the world's most valuable classics to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the famous track, the event is divided into 15 classes of racing. The main emphasis of the event will focus on the 60th anniversary of the Formula Junior series along with 70 years of Ferrari. Viewing your favorites in a static display is entertaining, but seeing them in action is a breathtaking experience. 9. Exotics on Cannery Row It may be one of the newest shows of the week, but EOCR has already outgrown its location. Taking place on Friday the 18th, you will need to get there early to find parking. Over 300 late model exotics and hypercars will be in attendance along with aftermarket vendors and major manufacturers. 8. Carmel By The Sea Concours on the Avenue returns for their 11th annual show. Eighteen blocks of downtown Carmel will be host to the world's finest cars. Also taking place on Tuesday the 15th, you should head here first before going to Cannery row. The picturesque small town is home to several celebrities and it has some of the highest property values in the US. Fun Fact: Clint Eastwood was mayor from 1986 to 88. 7. Gooding & Company Of all the week's auctions, Gooding takes place within earshot of The Lodge at Pebble Beach. As the official auction of the event, it is the only one to take place inside the gates of 17 Mile Drive. 6. Russo & Steele The fast-paced action of "auction in the round" was invented by Russo & Steele. Located at Fisherman's Wharf, it is within walking distance of other attractions and surrounded by great food. After viewing the auction lots, hang out at the pedestrian bridge to watch fast cars emerge from the Lighthouse avenue tunnel. 5. Mecum Dana Mecum and company have been a fixture of our magazine and website for years, and that is because they have the cars everyone is looking for. Taking place at the Hyatt Regency on the Del Monte Golf Course, their innovation is moving the big ticket items across during the daytime. We've been highlighing the most significant lots over the past 2 weeks, which is why you shouldn't miss it. But if it doesn't fit your schedule, it will also be shown on YouTube and NBCSN. 4. RM Sothebys Shelby collectors from around the world are already arriving at the Portola Hotel. Starbucks across the street was a great place to watch the event, but RM Sothebys surrounds the hotel with white fencing....So your best bet is to park in the garage and stroll through the lobby to view the featured cars. 3. McCall's Motorworks Revival If you thought you had seen it all, McCall's is one of the biggest events of the year. Taking place at the Monterey Jetport, it is a showcase of automotive and aeronautical history paired with amazing food. Last year I was able to meet Horacio Pagani and Reggie Jackson as they were both admiring a big block Cobra. Tickets start at $395 online and jump to $450 at the gate. The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering For their 15th anniversary, The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering is focusing on Mid Engined Marvels, Originals, The Great Ferraris, along with categories for pre and postwar racing. Located on the grounds of Quail Lodge, it offers a backdrop of the Santa Lucia mountains and a special treat for guests. Located adjacent to the hotel is the 20th anniversary of Bonhams Motorcar Auction. As usual, tickets for Qual have already sold out, but you can join the waiting list along with thousands of others. 1. Pebble Beach Concours d'-Elegance The boss says it best. Mecum Auctions Sees 7 $1 Million+ Sales at Monterey

The various auctions at California's Monterey Car Week have always seen notoriously high totals for their sales, but the 2015 shows seem to have been some of the highest of all. Mecum Auctions has announced their final total and top sales, showing the growth of interest in luxury cars is in no danger of slowing.With 387 cars in total crossing their block between Aug. 13 and 15, Mecum reached a total sales amount of $44,335,001, as an Aug. 19 press release from the auction house tells us. Seven cars alone brought in $10,225,000, with each individually selling for more than $1 million - with five of those sales happening on Saturday, Aug. 15, alone.The top sale from Mecum's event was a 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S for $2.3 million, while a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible wasn't far behind at $2.25 million. One of the most anticipated lots, Steve McQueen's Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera, sold for $1.95 million.
