McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The Incredible Story Of The '78th' Aston Martin One-77

About two years ago, Tim Burton, or as most of you may know him by his YouTube name Shmee 150, stood inside a special garage of a home in sunny Arizona, beaming at a satin chrome Aston Martin One-77. However, this wasn’t just any other One-77, but a car that shouldn’t exist: the so-called ‘78th One-77. Chassis #10711: The Aston Martin One-77 Prototype That Refused to Retire " width="680"> On paper, yes, Aston Martin only made 77 customer cars of its One-77. However, as Burton reveals in the video, this particular example, previously owned by James "artvandelay" on Instagram, is quite significant: a resurrected development prototype that was made road legal. Built originally as one of just 10 test cars, Chassis #10711 saw action at the Nürburgring, Le Mans, and Nardo, logging nearly 25,000 test miles, which makes it the highest mileage One-77 in existence. This car also served as a media mule, and made the rounds at events and venues like Geneva, Goodwood, and Monterey back in the day, before eventually fading into corporate obscurity as this particular chassis caught fire during its stint as a Safety Car. Eventually, Aston Martin decided to bring the car back to life after an offer was made by a collector from Africa, who refused delivery. This presented James with the opportunity to acquire the vehicle. While most development cars end their days either in crash labs or storage, AM/01-Pro was stripped to its bones and was refreshed inside out with a new grille, new wheels, a rear diffuser, headlights, and taillights, all while retaining the Cosworth-tuned 7.3-liter V12 and transmission. This powerplant was once crowned the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in the world, with 750 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque on tap. Its carbon monocoque, developed by Multimatic, meant a curb weight of just shy of 3,600 pounds. 0-60 mph happens in under 3.7 seconds, and the top speed is rated at 220+ mph. Still exceptional figures in 2025. Despite being over a decade old, stuff like the push-rod suspension visible through the transparent rear glass, the fully adjustable dampers, carbon ceramic brakes, combined with that radically hand-formed aluminium outer shell and space-age looking cabin, means that the One-77 remains evocative to this day. Chief engineer Chris Porritt’s goal with the car was to bring DTM race car dynamics to the road in an exquisite front-engine GT car, or as I like to call it, Gentleman’s Express. A Legacy of Exclusivity But what really sets this car apart are some of the things that the production One-77s never got. Think pre-production aero tweaks, and experimental ECU maps. Upon acquiring the car, James wrapped the original copper pearl paint in satin chrome. He also went to great lengths to unearth this car’s lineage while researching One-77s. “My intent was always to educate the automotive community,” - said James "artvandelay" While James has since sold the car, during his ownership, he made it his mission to meticulously document the vehicle’s unique provenance. He had extensive literature about the car on hand, including its appearance on the Feb 2012 cover of duPont REGISTRY (déjà vu?), an original Aston sales brochure, and even a pair of custom Cole Haan shoes, given out at the 2009 media launch event, and other memorabilia. So there you have it, the 78th One-77. While the car’s whereabouts are currently unknown, what’s left behind is a car with an incredible story, and one that was extensively documented by James. From a technical standpoint, chassis #10711 played a pivotal role in the One-77 story and represents the genesis of this incredible hypercar from Aston Martin, because the same team that worked on it would go on to develop future high-end Aston Martins like the Vulcan and Victor. Why Reputation—and Trust—Matters MostYariv confirmed that the spike in transport thefts is very real, and it prompted him to add more layers of security than ever before to protect his customers and their vehicles. As highlighted in a recent Miami News 7 (WSVN) report, organized crime rings have been exploiting the vehicle shipping process, posing as legitimate brokers and dispatchers. Once they gain control of the shipping order, they manipulate transport details, rerouting vehicles to fraudulent destinations where they are unloaded and vanish into the black market. In one case, a 2020 Rolls-Royce being transported from Miami Beach to Michigan disappeared entirely. The car’s owner, Detroit-area resident Nader Eldamouni, told 7News, “The car is a $300,000 car, Rolls-Royce, gone.” Detectives investigating the case uncovered an alarming trend where these scammers alter shipping paperwork, making everything look legitimate. Surveillance footage even showed suspects tailing transport trucks, ready to swoop in and steal the vehicles the moment they arrived at unauthorized drop-off points. The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of three men who now face charges including grand theft, dealing in stolen property, and conspiracy to commit organized fraud. Police caught them during a sting operation, watching as they paid a truck driver for the delivery of a stolen Lamborghini Urus. Scammers Getting Smarter with Fake PaperworkYariv also warned that these criminals are getting increasingly sophisticated, creating paperwork so convincing that even seasoned drivers could be fooled. “This is why working with a trusted, verified transport company is non-negotiable,” Yariv said. “If you’re just looking for the cheapest option or you rush into booking without checking credentials, you’re rolling the dice.” High-End Cars Are Prime TargetsWhile any vehicle could be targeted, it’s no surprise that luxury and exotic cars top the list for thieves. According to Miami Beach Police, recent recoveries include a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a Lamborghini Urus, and an Audi R8. These cars are fast money for criminals, either flipped quickly or shipped overseas for resale. How to Protect Yourself and Your CarBoth Yariv and law enforcement recommend several proactive steps for owners: Use a reputable, well-reviewed transport company that is fully registered, bonded, and insured. Install a GPS tracker in your vehicle so you can monitor its location in real time. Verify transport details directly with the carrier—not just with a broker or dispatcher. Demand clear, consistent paperwork and compare every document at each stage of the process. As Miami Beach Police spokesperson Christopher Bess told 7News, “Do your very best to ensure that your assets are protected.” A Changing IndustryThe vehicle transport industry is facing a new wave of challenges, and it’s clear that trust, reputation, and diligence are more important than ever. Yariv believes that technology, stricter regulations, and better consumer education will all play a role in combating these crimes. But until then, the best defense is awareness and knowing exactly who you’re handing your keys to.

New Film Friday On Petrolicious: Chasing The Alpine Dream

Petrolicious, the creator of quality, original films and articles for classic car enthusiasts, has released its latest video, featuring automotive devotee Jürgen Claus who tracked down the car of his dreams, an original Alpine A110 rally car. After a couple of years away, the Petrolicious website and YouTube Channel has been recently rebooted by duPont REGISTRY Group, and new films are now dropping every Friday. Petrolicious celebrates the inventions, the personalities, and the aesthetics that ignite a collective lust for great automotive machines, and it seeks to inform, entertain, and inspire its community of aficionados and pique the interest of those who have been missing out. Today, Petrolicious takes up Claus’s story... In Stuttgart, two brands are king: Porsche and Mercedes. Their presence is ubiquitous, paved into the roads, the culture, and the very identity of the region. If you grew up there, you were supposed to pick a side and pledge allegiance to one of the two. Jürgen Claus grew up in Stuttgart but didn’t adhere to that conventional German wisdom. Something else had earned his attention. In flashes, glimpses, and a few stolen frames of life during rides on his bike, he would spot a car. It would streak past, barely there, and then gone, but each time, it gave Jürgen something to dream about. Before it was a legend, before it was the car that toppled giants, the A110 was a newly fleshed curiosity. The Alpine was born in Dieppe, France, in the early 1960s as Jean Rédélé’s vision of a “weight is king” sports car built for agility over brute force. He saw weight as the real enemy, believing that the right balance of power, size, handling, and simplicity would create something truly special. What the world ended up with was a fiberglass-bodied, rear-engined scalpel of a car, built on Renault underpinnings. It was compact, delicate looking, and deceptively quick. The A110 would eventually thrive where muscle cars faltered, becoming a Rally tool that affixed its name onto motorsport history. It won everywhere, on the Monte Carlo stages, in the Alps, on gravel, on tarmac. It was light, agile, and utterly unforgiving. In 1973, when the World Rally Championship was officially founded, it was the Alpine A110 that took the very first title, proving that more horsepower wasn’t always better. Other lightweight pioneers like the Lancia Stratos may never have been penned if it wasn’t for the A110. Jürgen’s search for his A110 took him deep into the unknown, pulling threads on rumors and whispers. Finding a regular Alpine in decent condition isn’t easy. Finding a works race car? Almost impossible. The world is full of lookalikes, tributes, and fiberglass imposters. True competition built A110s are ghosts. He eventually caught wind of a car that had supposedly been sold in Hungary, a real Alpine with real pedigree. There were no documents, no clear paper trail, just a lead. He did what anyone with an obsession this deep would do. He packed a backpack full of cash and hit the road. No guarantees, no promises. Beneath layers of questionable modifications, spoilers, turbochargers, intercoolers, there was something unmistakable. The plaques in the front trunk were still original. On them, the chassis number revealed the truth. The car was real. It didn’t matter that it looked nothing like it should. It didn’t matter that it would take years of work to bring it back. He wasn’t leaving without it. Jürgen spent years undoing the damage. Hours turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. Sanding, welding, reshaping… dreaming. Obsessing. There were no blueprints, no factory records with detailed specs. The A110 wasn’t built with the obsessive precision of a Stuttgart engineer. It was built by French hands, refined through trial and error. Every reinforcement, every brace, every tweak was added as needed. Problems were solved on the spot, one by one with little documentation to follow. There were only 17 genuine versions of this car ever built, and that is in 1973. How many still existed? Just a handful of originals bobbing in a sea of replicas. Waiting to be discovered, and restored. “My name is Jürgen Claus,” he says, “and I fell in love with a queen. The queen of rallies.”

After a couple of years away, the website and YouTube Channel has been acquired and recently rebooted by duPont REGISTRY Group, and new films are now set to drop every Friday.
