McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Ferrari brings a special livery to the Italian Grand Prix. This year’s Formula 1 season is coming to Monza this weekend, one of the most legendary race tracks in the world and an undoubtedly integral venue to Formula 1 legacy. For Ferrari, one of the most historic teams in the world’s most prestigious racing series, the Prancing Horse is celebrating a special racing weekend at Monza. Specifically, it was 50 years ago in 1975 when Austrian driver Niki Lauda won his first World Championship title at the end of the Italian Grand Prix. Finishing third in the race with Clay Regazzoni winning the race in the other Ferrari, the moment was a glorious milestone for Ferrari, securing both the Drivers’ and Constructors' titles for the season. That success would kick off a high that Scuderia Ferrari would ride until 1979, and to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Scuderia Ferrari has recreated the livery that the 312 T F1 car wore when it emerged victorious in 1975. Racing drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will be behind the wheel of the SF-25, wearing a special historically inspired livery that features a shade of red like the one used in 1975, white longitudinal stripes, the drivers’ names in cursive script, racing numbers in black on a white background, with special treatments given to the rear wings, engine covers, and wheels to evoke the 312 T. In addition, the entire team will sport racing kit and suits inspired by what Scuderia Ferrari had in 1975, which was developed in partnership with longtime Scuderia Ferrari partner, PUMA. A replica collection of the special apparel will be available to the public, as well. At the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, fans will be able to see the 312 T that Niki Lauda drove to his first championship victory starting tomorrow to celebrate the anniversary, as well, alongside a car featuring the special livery. Touring Superleggera Debuts New Veloce12 “Barchetta” Rest...

After last year’s successful debut of the Veloce12 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, legacy Italian coachbuilder Touring Superleggera plans to deliver the first 5 customer units by the end of 2025. Now, one year later, the Veloce12’s droptop sibling arrives to capture more hearts and minds of fans who adore the updated take on the classic Ferrari 550 Maranello. Ahead of the public debut, I visited with the car and Touring’s CEO, Markus Tellenbach, to learn more about what goes into transforming a quintessential Prancing Pony into a thoroughly modernized convertible. If anything, the Veloce12 “Barchetta” only enhances the refined restomod job that made the hardtop so eye-catching. Tellenbach compared the original coupe to a “tuxedo on wheels” but likens the new al fresco version to “an Hermes bag on wheels.” The Barchetta nomenclature, meanwhile, harks back to a (potentially apocryphal) story he told me about the Ferrari 166’s origins back in 1948. Apparently, Enzo Ferrari himself trusted Touring to design and build the 166, and at the Turin Motor Show that year, someone described the shape’s wide waterline and hull-like curves as reminding them of a small boat. Hence, “Barchetta” in Italian, which directly translates to “little boat” in English. The stitched upholstery draped with rich leathers plays along with the Hermes aesthetic, with hints of a nautical theme, too. Similar details from the Veloce12 carry over, including the gated six-speed manual transmission and textural metal switchgear, though in this case finished in an enigmatic rose gold that my eyes never quite adjusted to on a misty Monterey afternoon. Such weather doesn’t quite do the Barchetta justice, though. “Following the success of the Veloce12,” Tellenbach laughed, “We were inclined and encouraged to try a variation that embraces the sun and that embraces the open skies, that’s the perfect companion for a joy ride through Tuscany.” Converting the 550 Maranello into a modern droptop required re-engineering the rear of the passenger compartment to both enhance rigidity and safety. In performance terms, the Veloce12 Barchetta’s stats on paper only improve upon the base 550 Maranello’s 5.5-liter V12 ever so slightly, with a gain of about 30 horsepower, mostly coming thanks to freer-flowing intake and exhaust that results in a rated output of 503 horsepower. Almost more importantly, that exhaust can open up its valving and transform from a more restrained and classy tone in the standard setting to a barking mad screamer. Tellenbach only winked a few times while revving the engine in the quiet Monterey neighborhood, admonishing that unleashing the full roar is definitely “up to the driver’s discretion.” Other subtle differences stand out under closer comparison with the original Veloce12. The new headlight lenses help to reduce the number of insects caught while driving at higher speeds, while the functional hood intake improves cooling to the engine bay via venting at the windshield cowl. And the gas cap features an imprint of the hood scoop’s design, in a nice echo of form that perfectly encapsulates the Touring restomod ethos. “We love the Maranello and we respect the Maranello,” Tellenbach concluded. “We feel it's a great car of the '90s; however, expectations today are for more contemporary performance, to make best use of modern materials, and what allowed the designers to create the flowing lines on the body was not possible in the '90s due to production technology.” The car I visited already features the final body molds—which, of note, can come in full exposed carbon-fiber in addition to the satin bronzed grey of the show car. Ferrari Reports Revenue Growth In Q2 2025

Ferrari emerges from the first half of 2025 successful. Any automotive enthusiast will tell you that Ferrari is one of the most prominent, celebrated, and ubiquitous names in the automotive world, and that its lineup boasts a level of luxury, exclusivity, performance, and style that is unmatched by most of the industry. However, Ferrari is also an incredibly successful business, not only featuring vehicle manufacturing but also racing efforts, a luxury fashion line, and more. In the first half of 2025, Ferrari reported positive financial results, continuing to grow as a business despite the challenges that the period provided. With an evolving lineup that now includes models like the F80, 12Cilindri which is starting to be delivered in larger quantities, and the new Amalfi, the Roma’s successor, Ferrari delivered roughly the same amount of vehicles in the second quarter of 2025 as the second quarter of 2024. The distribution of pure ICE vs hybrid-powered models delivered was 55 to 45 percent, showing that almost half of new Ferraris delivered during the period were electrified. Revenues increased by 4.4 percent during the period, with currency negatively impacting the results. EBITDA increased during the period by 5.9 percent, as well. In addition, Ferrari recently unveiled more intense versions of the 296, the new Ferrari 296 Speciale and the 296 Speciale A, and outside of its automotive lineup, the brand also introduced its new Hypersail racing yacht project. This charming classic also has its own epic story. While it was a popular and groundbreaking model for Ferrari in its time, and one of the most cherished classics from the legendary manufacturer today, the Ferrari Dino 246 was ahead of its time in a way. Rather than being sold as a Ferrari, it was sold under the Dino marque with a mid-mounted V6 rather than Ferrari’s more common V8 and 12-cylinder engines. However, Ferrari’s hybrid 296 supercar uses a V6 today, and so does the most powerful production roadgoing Ferrari yet, the new Ferrari F80. The Dino was an important milestone in Ferrari’s history, not only for its engine but also for the fact that it was the first production model from Ferrari to have a mid-mounted engine. Because of its impact and influence, it’s one of the most desirable classic Ferraris on the market, and one that will be crossing the block at this year’s Mecum Auctions Monterey 2025 Auction. However, this 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS isn’t just any Dino, it’s a special example that has an incredible story behind it. It was driven during the 1975 Cannonball Run by Jack May, who set a record by driving from New York to Los Angeles at an average speed of 83 mph in just 35 hours and 53 minutes alongside Rick Cline. Consigned by Jack May himself, the car combines the legacy of the Dino with the excitement of the Cannonball Run and Jack May’s illustrious racing career, with experience at venues like Sebring, Mille Miglia, Road Atlanta, and more. The car is in stunningly preserved, unrestored condition, finished in Bianco over a Rosso leather interior, proudly showcasing its heritage, and it’s set to cross the block at Mecum’s 2025 Monterey Auction, which is taking place from August 14-16 at the Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, California. The Ferrari F40 needs no introduction, but the F40 LM by Michelotto takes this iconic supercar to an entirely different level. Born from a racing vision in the late '80s, the LM was developed after Daniel Marin of Ferrari importer Charles Pozzi SA pushed for a competition-spec version. With Ferrari's blessing, Michelotto transformed 19 F40s into LMs, purpose-built for track domination. Among them, a few were further upgraded to GTC specifications, delivering the most potent evolution of the breed. Chassis 95448, the 14th LM built, is one of those rare few, showcasing a documented legacy that spans European circuits and concours lawns alike. RM Sotheby's is set to feature this F40 LM as one of its headline lots during the upcoming Monterey Car Week auction, which is sure to draw attention from serious collectors and vintage motorsport worldwide. This particular F40 LM wears its racing DNA proudly. Finished in classic Rosso Corsa with plexiglass sliding windows and aerodynamic tweaks like a revised front end and large rear wing, it looks every bit the track weapon. Every detail is functional, from the lightweight body to the OZ magnesium wheels. While originally completed in 1992, this example has undergone multiple refreshes, most notably a factory repaint and tuning at Michelotto in 2014, preserving its authenticity while guaranteeing it remains in top-tier condition. Whether seen at Mugello in the '90s or on display at ModaMiami in 2025, it still turns heads wherever it goes. Inside, the car sticks to a no-nonsense race-ready vibe. Cloth-trimmed seats, harnesses, and a pared-back competition-style dash define its cockpit. There's no fluff; just what you need to focus on speed and precision. The current interior stays true to the original factory spec, as verified by Ferrari Classiche certification, confirming the numbers-matching engine, transaxle, and coachwork. While the physical "Red Book" is missing, digital documentation confirms full transparency for serious collectors. This F40 LM was always meant to be driven hard, and its careful maintenance history and detailed service records, including a recent $67K overhaul, show it's been treated accordingly. Of course, the heart of this F40 is its monster GTC-spec engine. Producing an incredible 760 horsepower, nearly 300 more than a standard F40, this twin-turbo V8 is paired with upgraded cooling, suspension, and braking systems. The performance specs are also impressive: 0–120mph in under 10 seconds, sounding like a turbocharged symphony. It's the kind of analog power delivery that's increasingly rare, making this LM a thrilling drive and a legitimate piece of motorsport history. With its clean documentation, original components, and unmistakable presence, this 1993 Ferrari F40 LM by Michelotto represents the top of the food chain for Ferrari collectors and historic racers alike. The fifth edition of Cavallino Classic Modena wrapped with a record turnout, showcasing some of Ferrari’s rarest and most iconic models. Since its inception, the Cavallino Classic has served as a spirited tribute to Enzo Ferrari’s vision, celebrating the cars that have carried the Prancing Horse through decades of racing, innovation, and craftsmanship. Whether held in Palm Beach or Modena, the event welcomes the most passionate collectors and fans of the brand to honor Ferrari’s past and present, often through examples that rarely, if ever, surface in public. At its core, the Cavallino Classic is less about glitz and more about the celebration of Ferrari’s ongoing legacy, and the Modena event offers the perfect setting for the occasion. This year’s event took place at Casa Maria Luigia, the countryside estate of chef Massimo Bottura, combining culinary class with supercar-inspired art. Scattered across the property, some of the rarest Ferraris ever built were on display, each sourced and curated with care. The big winners this year included the 1954 Ferrari 250 Monza #0442M, taking Best of Show Competition, a 1960 250 GT Cabriolet from Pinin Farina, and a well-preserved 1966 275 GTB4 “long nose,” all representing a diverse lineup of Ferrari’s racing and road-going heritage. With names like Piero Ferrari and Enzo Mattioli Ferrari in attendance, it was a reminder that Modena is still the heart of Ferrari. Now in its fifth year, the event leaned into its strengths: quality over quantity, atmosphere over fanfare. Attendees, mostly by invitation, mingled with judges and other collectors over food, wine, and a shared love of Italian supercars. Live music, curated menus, and hands-on experiences rounded out the weekend. But it was the cars, some wearing battle scars, others painstakingly restored, that remained the centerpiece. The celebration left the estate with a parade into Modena’s city center and a stop at the Museo Enzo Ferrari. Ferrari’s greatest Prancing Horses brought a stampede to Goodwood. Ferrari is, of course, responsible for making some of the greatest cars in the world. Recently, Ferrari has unveiled a new hybrid halo hypercar, as well as an intensified version of its 296 hybrid supercar, and a new front-engined grand tourer, all of which were proudly displayed during the festivities at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The legendary and highly prestigious event brings the world’s greatest drivers, cars, and manufacturers to a historic and beautiful destination for days of hillclimb racing, stunning displays, and historic celebrations. This year, Ferrari’s presence saw a dynamic showcase of two of its newest supercar sensations, the ultra-exclusive F80 hypercar and the new V12 grand tourer, the 12Cilindri, on the hillclimb, and the display reveals of the new track-focused 296 Speciale and 296 Speciale A, as well as Ferrari’s new V8 grand tourer and the successor to the Roma, the new Ferrari Amalfi. In addition to the captivating debuts at the event, Ferrari also brought the Purosangue, showcasing the capabilities of Ferrari Tailor Made, and the F50, one of the F80’s legendary predecessors, as well as the Ferrari 296 Challenge race car. Ferrari's first road-legal XX series supercar lands stateside in a menacing spec. As the automotive world continues to evolve and transcend, we, as drivers and enthusiasts, are witnessing brands and manufacturers push the boundaries of performance unlike ever before. We live in a day and age where producing 1,000 horsepower is no longer a challenging feat for engineers, which leaves power-hungry masterminds like Ferrari to drum up something entirely new for their thrill-seeking clientele. Derived from its exclusive customer race program, the Ferrari SF90 XX and SF90 XX Spider channels the spirit of track-only icons like the FXX-K EVO and 599XX in a road-legal format. The ultra-limited production run makes history as it's the first time that Ferrari ever engineered a race-bred XX Series supercar for the road. Ferrari Makes A New Tailor Made Daytona SP3 For Car Week ...

Ferrari brings bespoke elegance to Monterey for a cause. As the Goodwood Festival of Speed quickly approaches at the end of this week, the next major event on the automotive calendar, and one that is swiftly approaching, is Monterey Car Week. The idyllic West Coast location turns into the world’s most important and prestigious automotive capital for a week, where the planet’s most exclusive, coveted, desirable, valuable and rare cars gather for luxurious gatherings with the background of some of California’s most stunning coastal views. This year, Ferrari is bringing something big to Monterey Car Week, specifically, an example of its Daytona SP3, the most recent member of Ferrari’s ultra-exclusive Icona Series, and a historically inspired supercar masterpiece with Ferrari’s first mid-mounted, non-hybrid V12 since the Enzo. The 599-car allocation of the Daytona SP3 has been sold out, but this specific example is added, bringing the total to 600 examples. With a stunningly unique Tailor Made configuration that splits the car in two across its length, exposed carbon fiber and Giallo Modena are juxtaposed, with Ferrari’s iconic lettering boldly displayed across the car in the first livery application of its kind. Meanwhile, the interior features fabric upholstery crafted from recycled tires with a unique Prancing Horse motif, as well as a dashboard with F1-derived carbon fiber, nodding to Ferrari’s rich racing heritage. The car is set to be auctioned during the adrenaline-fueled festivities of Monterey Car Week, with all the proceeds from the sale set to benefit the Ferrari Foundation, a charity organization that contributes to various educational projects, including Save the Children, where Ferrari’s donation recently contributed to rebuilding the Aveson Charter School in Altadena, California which was affected by the Eaton Wildfire earlier this year.
