McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. With the exception of the 911 GT1, within the Porsche 911 hierarchy, the GT2 RS often sits at the very top, and it’s built upon a motorsports lineage that began with the air-cooled 993 GT2 back in the 1990s. The GT2 RS isn’t just a faster GT3 RS; it’s a different beast altogether. The 2018 model with the 991.2 generation took things to another level and is significant for several reasons. This example, listed with duPont REGISTRY, only has 7,504 miles on the clock. Where the GT3 RS features a naturally aspirated engine, the GT2 RS packs a M64/60 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six that, with increased boost (1.55 bar), produces 700 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. For some context, the same unit in the 991.2 Turbo S puts out 580 horsepower. Also, unlike the Turbo S, power goes exclusively to the rear wheels through Porsche’s lightning-fast 7-speed PDK. It hits 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and tops out at 211 mph. But it is out on the racetrack where the GT2 RS (Weissach) really shines. When Porsche unveiled the 991.2 GT2 RS at Circuit Paul Ricard, Porsche works drivers and racing legends, Walter Röhrl and Mark Webber, were amongst the first to demonstrate its potential. Porsche set a 6:47.3 Nürburgring lap in 2017, a record it held until the " title="YouTube video" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen> For some context, that is still the second fastest time for a street-legal car at the ‘Ring, behind only the AMG One’s 6:29.09 time, set in 2022. This particular example is finished in GT Silver Metallic with gold wheels, and the yellow calipers mean carbon ceramics, which were standard on the GT2 RS. Inside, you’ll find a black interior with a mix of Alcantara, carbon fiber, red contrast stitching, and minimal insulation. This is a cockpit that prioritizes function over everything else. While the car comes with several premium options, it is also equipped with the highly desirable optional Weissach Package, a $18,000 upgrade when new. It replaces the roof, hood, and rear wing with exposed carbon fiber, adds magnesium wheels that shave 25 pounds of unsprung mass. The result is a curb weight just over 3,240 pounds, which is a nod to Porsche’s obsession with weight reduction. Every vent, NACA duct, scoop, and surface serves a function, from brake cooling to downforce optimization. Another distinction is the painted center sections on the hood and roof, for a more distinctive look. Another highlight that distinguishes it from a GT3 RS is the larger intakes in the front bumper, to allow more air flow for the bigger radiators. Porsche built fewer than 1,000 GT2 RS units globally, and anywhere between 450 and 500 units made it to the United States. Demand was so strong at launch that most cars traded above $500,000 at launch. Prices have since stabilized, and depending on condition and specification, are still holding firm in today’s market. The Most Powerful Manual Production Corvette Ever Built

What you’re looking at here is something rather special: This is the most powerful manual Corvette ever built, and the last of its lineage. The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 represents the culmination of seven generations of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Corvettes with a stick shift. It’s the final evolution of the small-block lineage that began in the 1950s with the C1, perfected through decades of small-block development, track lessons, and relentless refinement. This car marks the end of that era before the mid-engine C8 (no longer available with a manual), which rewrote the story of the definitive American sports car in 2020. Under the hood sits a 6.2-liter LT5 V8 exclusive to C7 ZR1, supercharged to produce 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of torque. Compared to the C7 Z06’s LT4, which makes around 650 horsepower, the LT5 packs a 50% larger Eaton supercharger. It also features both direct and port injection and upgraded fuel delivery to handle the extra boost. Other highlights worth mentioning are the forged aluminum pistons, titanium connecting rods, and a staggering 13 intercoolers. It still remains one of the most powerful engines that GM has ever put in a production car, besides the 1,250-horsepower, 5.5-liter LT7 found in the recently announced C8 ZR1X. But that car is an automatic. In the C7 ZR1, the LT5 was available with a Tremec 7-speed manual, which sends all that power exclusively to the rear wheels. The dash to 60 mph happens in under 3.0 seconds, and the top speed is rated at 212 mph. At Virginia International Raceway, the ZR1 clocked a 2:37.25 lap, one of the fastest ever recorded by a production car there. This particular example, now listed for sale at Earth MotorCars in Carrollton, Texas, has just 2,737 miles on the clock and is the rarer roadster variant of the C7 ZR1. Finished in a stealthy black over a black leather cabin with Competition Sport Bucket Seats. It also features the highly desirable ZTK Track Performance Package, which adds a carbon fiber rear wing, front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and a track-tuned Magnetic Ride Control suspension. With carbon-ceramic brakes, front curb-view cameras, and a Performance Data and Video Recorder, it comes equipped with all the essentials needed for a track day. For the street, the 3ZR trim elevates comfort and tech with heated and ventilated seats, a premium Bose 10-speaker audio system, navigation, head-up display, and memory seat functions. You also get suede microfiber trim, a carbon fiber wrapped steering wheel, and a battery protection package, details that speak to both craftsmanship and purpose. When new, it stickered near $145,000, depending on spec. Today, low-mile manual examples are becoming investment-grade machines, not just for the phenomenal performance on tap, but also for their place in Corvette history. Just 2,953 units (2,441 Coupes, 512 Roadsters) were built over a single year production run. With a 90-gallon fuel capacity (including a 50-gallon auxiliary tank), you can cover serious distances without worrying about refueling. Inside, the aforementioned Telluride floorplan maximizes usable space with dual couches that convert into sleeping areas, a full galley, and an 82-by-80-inch memory foam mattress. Real maple cabinetry, cedar-lined closets, and soft-touch ceilings. It even comes equipped with a biometric safe, Starlink satellite internet, and a surround-sound system. But rewind to last year’s race, when Lewis Hamilton was still with the Silver Arrows and Singapore was the setting for an equally spectacular event: the reveal of the highly-exclusive 2025 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ “Motorsport Collectors Edition.” As one of just 200 cars, it represents one of the most exclusive modern AMG road cars ever made. This particular example, with just 25 miles on the clock, has never registered and has now surfaced for sale. It bridges the gap between AMG’s track-focused DNA and the exclusivity once reserved for the record-breaking AMG ONE. Just like the ONE (which George Russell coincidentally owns), it celebrates Mercedes’ Formula 1 dominance and translates the race tech of the silver arrows into a form you can actually drive every day. Finished in Obsidian Black Metallic, a highlight of this GT 63 PRO is the hand-painted silver Mercedes star motifs and PETRONAS green accents that sweep across the front splitter, side intakes, and rear diffuser, which serves as a contrast against the extensive use of carbon fiber on the bodywork and the Affalterbach crest. As any F1 fan will know, these colors are a direct nod to the team’s championship-winning F1 livery and their dominant streak in the hybrid era with Lewis Hamilton. The forged 21-inch AMG wheels feature PETRONAS-colored rim flanges, while Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires and ceramic composite brakes (also in PETRONAS green) with 420 mm front discs bring serious performance credibility. Inside, the motorsport theme continues with AMG Performance seats upholstered in Nappa leather and micro-cut microfiber, stitched in PETRONAS green. The illuminated “1 of 200” badge, carbon fiber trim, and AMG door sills all reinforce its exclusivity. A Burmester 3D Surround Sound System, MBUX Interior Assistant, AMG TRACK PACE telemetry, and GUARD 360° vehicle protection all come standard. Under the hood sits AMG’s handcrafted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, good for 612 horsepower through a nine-speed SPEEDSHIFT transmission and fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. There’s an interesting parallel here to another collector-focused machine, the 997.2 Porsche 911 Turbo S “Edition 918 Spyder.” That car was built for customers waiting for their 918 hypercar to arrive, finished with acid green accents tying it to the e-hybrid tech. The AMG GT 63 PRO follows a similar philosophy, linking AMG’s flagship performance coupe to the AMG ONE’s Formula 1-derived powertrain and technology. But unlike Porsche’s run of 918 cars, as previously mentioned, Mercedes-AMG will only make 200 of these, and only 33 examples will come to the United States, making this edition vastly rarer and ideal for any motorsport-inspired car collection. Regardless of whether you’re a GM fan or not, Yenko is a name you’ve most likely heard of if you’re even remotely into American muscle cars. For decades, it’s been tied to outrageous Camaros and big-block Chevys, with its roots running straight through to Don Yenko and the Central Office Production Order (COPO) system that gave us legends like the original ZL-1 back in the late 1960s. While we’ve seen the Yenko-name appear on modern Camaros, that same factory-backed dealer-driven performance didn’t appear on GM’s radically different C8 Corvette, until it was now. First announced in 2024, this is the 1,000-horsepower Stage I twin-turbo Yenko C8 Corvette, a limited-run mid-engined exotic being built by Specialty Vehicle Engineering (SVE), a second-stage manufacturer and Tier One supplier to both GM and dealers, who have delivered over 65,000 vehicles. That headline horsepower figure puts it right in line with the upcoming ZR1X, which Chevrolet itself is positioning as a hypercar, because it produces 1,250 horsepower from its hybrid-assisted twin-turbo setup. The Yenko C8, however, doesn’t rely on electrification. Instead, it extracts four-figure power from its custom-built LT2’s 6.2-liter V8, which employs a pair of Garrett 58 mm ceramic ball-bearing turbos, forged internals, CNC-ported heads, and a proprietary camshaft. The headline 1,000 horsepower is on pump gas. With a stage II tune and flex fuel, you're looking at 1,200 horsepower. Compared to the stock Stingray’s 495 horsepower, the potent Z06’s 670, or the 1,064 horsepower ZR1, the Yenko pushes the Corvette into territory you usually only see with top-tier hybrid supercars these days. A forged steel crankshaft, H-beam rods, and 2618 aluminum pistons anchor the bottom end, while ARP studs keep it all together. Upgraded high- and low-pressure fuel systems ensure those turbos never starve. Even the valve covers have been reengineered to integrate oil separators, and the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has also been beefed up to handle the additional load, with power going exclusively to the rear wheels. Inside, every car will feature Yenko sYc embroidery on the headrests, unique floormats, and bespoke badging. While the car seen here is a vibrant blue with custom white stripes and wheels, you can also choose from 14 factory paint colors, nine graphic packages, optional carbon fiber elements, and even calipers painted to match the stripes. All graphics feature OE-quality UV-resistant vinyl to ensure they hold up over time. So, does a 1,000-horsepower Corvette make sense in practice? The Stingray is already sub-three seconds to 60 mph, and the Z06 delivers track-ready performance without turbos. However, when you factor in the rarity, just 60 will be built (50 coupes and 10 convertibles), the COPO connection, and the Yenko name backed by GM dealer support/warranty, this limited-run special makes a compelling case as a future collectible.
