McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Elferspot Spotlight: Three Porsches That Take Very Different Routes

Elferspot, part of duPont REGISTRY Group, has a knack for surfacing the Porsches that reward a second look, and this round makes the point three different ways. The Porsche-focused marketplace gathers collector-grade cars from dealers, specialists, and private sellers, and the listings that stand out tend to do it on documentation and specification rather than presentation alone. The three we picked this time share almost nothing except the badge on the nose. One is a Paint to Sample 930 that has lived with the same owner since 1999. Another is a Paint to Sample 991 GT3 Touring with 17,050 kilometers, a manual gearbox, and no rear wing to announce what it is. The third is not a 911 at all, but a Belgian-delivered 968 Club Sport that only landed in the US last year. Turbo icon, modern collector, transaxle wildcard. Here's why each one is worth your attention. 1983 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 GALLERY-EMBED Most 930s you come across are black, silver or Guards Red. This 1983 Turbo 3.3 is none of those. It left the factory in a Paint to Sample dark green metallic over black leather, and it still wears that color today following a full repaint in June 2025. The German-delivered left-hand-drive coupé shows 119,160 kilometers and was first registered in March 1983 before being imported to France in 1996. It has been with its fourth and current owner since 1999, which is where the real story starts. That ownership length shows up in the paperwork. The service book still has its stamps, documented visits to German Porsche centers go back to 1986, and the invoice file runs continuously from 1996 through 2025. Mechanically, it has been kept honest too, with the clutch, turbocharger and all four dampers replaced in 2021 and the four-speed gearbox rebuilt at the same time. Brake discs went on roughly 2,000 kilometers ago. The tires are the one item to plan for, dated 2008 at the rear and 2013 at the front. Equipment runs to electrically adjustable heated sport seats, a sunroof and the original Fuchs wheels, and the 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six sends 300 PS to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual. This is the established European 930 formula, just in a color almost nobody else specified. View Listing 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring GALLERY-EMBED The GT3 Touring already trades the fixed rear wing for something more discreet, and this July 2018 car takes the idea further. It is finished in Paint to Sample Midnight Blue Metallic, color code 39C, over black leather and fabric, and it shows 17,050 kilometers from new. The German-delivered example is matching numbers, accident-free, and still in its original paint, with two owners in its history. The current one bought it from the first keeper in April 2019 with just 876 kilometers on the clock, after it had been sold through Porsche Center Lübeck and collected at the factory in Zuffenhausen. The Porsche service history is complete; a major service was carried out in July 2026, and the Porsche Approved warranty runs through July 2027. Paint-protection film covers the front end, sides, roof, mirrors and the exposed sections of the rear bumper, with a protective coating over the whole car. Understated does not mean lightly optioned. The list includes PCCB ceramic brakes, front-axle lift, the 90-liter fuel tank, folding bucket seats, Sport Chrono, LED headlights with PDLS, carbon interior trim, reversing camera and the Touring Package. Blue Pepita seat centers were added to echo the exterior, and the original inserts plus an extra Pepita cushion come with the car. Underneath it all is the reason to want one: the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six making 500 PS, paired with a six-speed manual. As an early July 2018 build, the seller also notes it predates the gasoline particulate filter. View Listing 1993 Porsche 968 Club Sport GALLERY-EMBED Every good selection needs a car that pulls the eye sideways, and this one is it. The 968 Club Sport was Porsche's lighter, more focused take on the 968 coupé: rear seats deleted, comfort features stripped out, insulation reduced, lightweight fixed-back seats and simpler trim fitted, and the chassis tightened up to match. The result came in around 100 kilograms lighter than the standard car. The 3.0-liter naturally aspirated four makes 240 PS and drives through a six-speed manual and rear transaxle, which is a layout worth appreciating while the market still mostly looks past it. This black-over-black-cloth example was completed in Stuttgart on January 15, 1993 and sold new by Porsche Center Tag that March. It stayed in Belgium until 2025 before being imported to the US, and it comes with its original purchase material, early service records and Belgian registration documents. European Collectibles, which is offering the car in Costa Mesa, California, describes the condition as highly original, with strong paint, well-presented wheels and an almost unmarked interior. The seller states an original 69,487 kilometers, or 43,177 miles. One practical note for domestic buyers: the seller says the car cannot currently be registered in California under state emissions rules, so confirming local registration requirements should be part of the conversation. 1-of-8 Racing Yellow Porsche 918 Spyder Listed on duPont REGISTRY

A 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder, finished in a striking Racing Yellow over a Mocha Brown leather interior, is now available through duPont REGISTRY Select, the brand's curated inventory of verified, hand-selected vehicles. Believed to be one of only eight examples finished in Racing Yellow across the entire 918-unit production run in Zuffenhausen over a 21-month production run, and reportedly, this is the only example configured with a Mocha Brown interior, making it among the rarest known specifications of Porsche's Holy Trinity hybrid hypercar, which also includes the McLaren P1 and the Ferrari LaFerrari. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 that produces 599 horsepower, with dual electric motors adding a further 288 horsepower for a combined system output of 887 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque. The result: a supercar that can hit 60 mph in 2.6 seconds and a Weissach-equipped example set the Nürburgring lap record for street-legal production cars back in September 2013, completing the 12.9-mile circuit in 6 minutes and 57 seconds, the first production car to break the 7-minute barrier. The point was proved definitively at Mecum Kissimmee 2026, where a 1-of-1 Paint-to-Sample Pure Orange example sold for $5,500,000, resetting what exceptional specification commands at auction. <- Gallery -> Silver has traditionally dominated the order books, but this example's Racing Yellow specification (one of 12 factory colors), offset here by the warmth of the Mocha Brown cabin (one of 7 factory interior colors), makes this one of the most visually distinctive examples in the production run. The acid green brake calipers and accents are the 918's own visual signature for the brand's e-Hybrid tech. Rare Fayence Yellow 2005 Porsche Carrera GT Listed on duPont REGISTRY

A 2005 Porsche Carrera GT with 10,644 miles, finished in Fayence Yellow (Paint Code: 1C1 / Fayencegelb), is now available on duPont REGISTRY through Graham Rahal Performance. Those in Porsche circles should be aware that the color is the variable that separates this car from the majority of the 644 US-delivered examples. GT Silver Metallic accounted for more than half of the total Carrera GT production of 1,270 units worldwide, produced at Porsche's Leipzig plant in Germany. Fayence Yellow only made up 89 examples, making it one of the rarest standard-color specifications in the entire model run. Of the 89, it is believed that only 44 made it to North America. On a car whose collector value is driven as much by specification as condition, the color alone changes the conversation entirely. The Carrera GT, of ofcourse, traces its origins directly to Porsche's abandoned LMP2000 Le Mans prototype program. That project's powerplant found its road car purpose here, bored and stroked to 5.7 liters for 605 horsepower and a 205 mph top speed. No paddle-shift option existed, no stability control, and no electronic safety net. Just an evocative V10, a heritage-inspired beachwood shifter in the middle, and a drivetrain honed by none other than two-time world rally champion and Porsche works driver Walter Röhrl. Porsche fitted Ceramic Composite Brake discs on all four corners and developed a specific set of Michelin Pilot Sport tires for the car. As we detailed in our Carrera GT Market Spotlight, the analog purity that once drew mixed reactions from critics is precisely what drives serious collector demand today. Having celebrated 25 years last year, the Porsche has continued to keep the CGT relevant and has made it even safer by developing a brand-new tire set with Michelin. At 10,644 miles, this particular example with some additional upgrades and yellow accents in the cabin, is a well-driven one, which in the Carrera GT market carries its own premium. Having said that, a Fayence Yellow car with documented road miles and a coherent ownership history is a considerably rarer thing. With the exception of the 911 GT1, within the Porsche 911 hierarchy, the GT2 RS often sits at the very top, and it’s built upon a motorsports lineage that began with the air-cooled 993 GT2 back in the 1990s. The GT2 RS isn’t just a faster GT3 RS; it’s a different beast altogether. The 2018 model with the 991.2 generation took things to another level and is significant for several reasons. This example, listed with duPont REGISTRY, only has 7,504 miles on the clock. Where the GT3 RS features a naturally aspirated engine, the GT2 RS packs a M64/60 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat-six that, with increased boost (1.55 bar), produces 700 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. For some context, the same unit in the 991.2 Turbo S puts out 580 horsepower. Also, unlike the Turbo S, power goes exclusively to the rear wheels through Porsche’s lightning-fast 7-speed PDK. It hits 60 mph in 2.7 seconds and tops out at 211 mph. But it is out on the racetrack where the GT2 RS (Weissach) really shines. When Porsche unveiled the 991.2 GT2 RS at Circuit Paul Ricard, Porsche works drivers and racing legends, Walter Röhrl and Mark Webber, were amongst the first to demonstrate its potential. Porsche set a 6:47.3 Nürburgring lap in 2017, a record it held until the " title="YouTube video" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen> For some context, that is still the second fastest time for a street-legal car at the ‘Ring, behind only the AMG One’s 6:29.09 time, set in 2022. This particular example is finished in GT Silver Metallic with gold wheels, and the yellow calipers mean carbon ceramics, which were standard on the GT2 RS. Inside, you’ll find a black interior with a mix of Alcantara, carbon fiber, red contrast stitching, and minimal insulation. This is a cockpit that prioritizes function over everything else. While the car comes with several premium options, it is also equipped with the highly desirable optional Weissach Package, a $18,000 upgrade when new. It replaces the roof, hood, and rear wing with exposed carbon fiber, adds magnesium wheels that shave 25 pounds of unsprung mass. The result is a curb weight just over 3,240 pounds, which is a nod to Porsche’s obsession with weight reduction. Every vent, NACA duct, scoop, and surface serves a function, from brake cooling to downforce optimization. Another distinction is the painted center sections on the hood and roof, for a more distinctive look. Another highlight that distinguishes it from a GT3 RS is the larger intakes in the front bumper, to allow more air flow for the bigger radiators. Porsche built fewer than 1,000 GT2 RS units globally, and anywhere between 450 and 500 units made it to the United States. Demand was so strong at launch that most cars traded above $500,000 at launch. Prices have since stabilized, and depending on condition and specification, are still holding firm in today’s market.
