Before Ford’s return to the World Rally Championship was ever a possibility, cars like the Escort RS1800, Sierra RS Cosworth, and legendary drivers like Ari Vatanen and Carlos Sainz were already paving the way and making history. For longtime rally fans, the sight and sound of a Ford charging through a rally stage is a distant memory, making the recent announcement of its return to WRC all the more exciting.
Starting in 2028, Ford will return to the championship as a full factory-backed team under Ford Racing. Ford says the experience from competing in WRC will help with the development of its next generation of European passenger models, including both electric and hybrids.
Ford will also reunite with M-Sport, its longtime rally partner, which has been involved with the brand for close to 30 years. The two will begin working together ahead of the 2028 season, with an all-new Ford WRC car planned for 2029. That car is expected to take inspiration from one of Ford's upcoming European road cars, sparking the connection between the race program and production lineup and making it a little more direct than it has been in the past.
Looking back at Ford's rally history, that road-to-race connection isn't anything new. The Escort and Sierra helped build the brand's reputation on European rally stages, while later Focus, Fiesta, and Puma rally cars carried that tradition forward. Some of that competition experience also found its way into Ford's road cars over the years, from the 1970 Escort Mexico to more recent performance and off-road models like the Ranger Raptor.
The timing of Ford's return is interesting, too, with new WRC regulations arriving for the 2027 season and changes taking place behind the scenes with the championship's commercial rights. Ford will enter that next phase in 2028, adding another major motorsport program to its Ford Racing family. For fans who remember the blue-and-white Fords of previous WRC eras, the biggest takeaway is even simpler: after years away, Ford is going rallying again.
