September means only one thing to auto aficionados: recovering from Monterey Car Week. Concours, auctions, and vintage car racing are the backdrop for an industry and its customers to rub elbows while celebrating their collective passion together. This year’s event was no exception, so in this issue, we’re riding the high and examining a few of the features that make this coastal stretch of Northern California so great.
On page 36, we recap the history of Monterey Car Week’s acclaimed grand finale event, the Concours d’Elegance, first run in 1950. Then on page 44, we tour Pebble Beach’s famous 17-Mile Drive. This loop around the Monterey Peninsula skims white sand beaches and drives deep into lush forests; we recommend a few pit stops to make along the way.
Perhaps more so than cars, Pebble Beach is known for world-class golf. On page 80, we look at the rise of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the No. 1 course in the country. There’s more overlap with golf and the automotive world than you may think. Formula 1 driver Lando Norris explains on page 94 how golf can be a complimentary training exercise and a much-needed way to decompress mentally between races.
Monterey Car Week has become a de facto show for automakers to launch new cars, as well. Many times, a Pebble Beach event is the first time a new model is shown to the public in person. There are lots of new supercars we expected to see there, including three in this month’s issue.
The first is our cover car, the 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic. This new 911 combines the car’s classic design elements with state-of-the-art mechanics. Available only with a 7-speed manual, the new Sport Classic is based on the 911 Turbo S and features a tweaked 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine producing 543 horsepower. There are so many amazing design details on this car, our favorite being the ducktail spoiler and retro Fuchs wheels. Pour over all the 911 Sport Classic features on page 12.

California’s own supercar, the Czinger 21C, would certainly be a worthy attendee of Monterey Car Week. The 21C has set lap records at Laguna Seca and Circuit of the Americas. With 1,233 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of just 1.9 seconds, this car is a beast among beasts and perfect for the Pebble Beach crowd to ogle. Another car for the books is Pagani’s Huayra Codalunga (page 32), a long-tail variant of the brand’s supercar developed at the request of a few design-minded customers. Only five will ever be made, creating a level of rarity that ensures it will be an instant collectible.
