Time is the one thing we can’t collect, restore or replace – making it our most precious commodity. During Monterey Car Week, it was quite a trek to reach a private vineyard-lined hilltop above Carmel Valley, but when Gordon Murray Special Vehicles is unveiling a new car more than 24 hours before its public debut, the journey felt more like a pilgrimage. Professor Murray’s S1 needs to be seen in the flesh to fully appreciate its purposeful beauty, while time with Gordon and his right-hand man, Dario Franchitti, is always well spent.
In the meantime, Michael Teo Van Runkle got the inside line on Lamborghini’s Super Veloce treatment of its Revuelto V12 hybrid flagship, while I caught up with Audi CEO Gernot Döllner at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering to discuss his remarkable Art Deco-inspired Nuvolari halo car. And Bradley Iger tests the track-focused Mercedes-AMG GT63 Pro.
The finest things in life don’t simply mark time; they become part of it. The Lifestyle section hosts 20 pages of our Annual Watch Guide, showcasing the masterpieces in modern, heritage and independent horology, along with a look back at the inaugural TIME at Wynn event in Las Vegas. In The Market, we examine how Car Week’s record-breaking sales have filtered into the online market, and spotlight McKenna Cars.
Enjoy the issue, and as always, drive safely.
