duPont REGISTRY 40th Anniversary - Cover Cars: 2004

After 40 years, duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars capture moments in automotive history. This year, duPont REGISTRY, the source for supercars since 1985, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In that time, some of the world’s most desirable, iconic, and influential luxury and exotic cars have graced the cover of our magazine over the past 40 years, and together, the cover cars of duPont REGISTRY’s hundreds of monthly issues tell a story of automotive history and its evolution since the ‘80s. Looking back at duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars from the year 2004, some serious nostalgia is stirred up for any automotive enthusiast, and each year, a cover car shows an iconic moment of the past, when a car we see as a classic today was the hottest new creation on the market. Take a trip down memory lane and look at our 2004 magazine covers below, and continue to celebrate our milestone anniversary by buying a copy of our special 40th anniversary edition magazine. Buy Our 40th Anniversary Issue January - Bentley Continental GT By the top of 2004, a new era had begun for Bentley, which under Volkswagen Group ownership had finally launched its first new car, the Continental GT. The new coupe balanced Bentley's sumptuous British luxury and elegant design with performance-oriented driver focus. Since then, the Continental GT became a veritable sensation, and the W12 engine that was launched with it has since been retired in favor of a hybrid V8 powertrain. Along with some other desirable British luxury vehicles, the Continental GT was the star of the January 2004 cover of duPont REGISTRY. February - Honda/Acura NSX Concept, Audi Le Mans Quattro Concept, Dodge Tomahawk V10 Concept Our February 2004 cover featured a look at what the future of the automotive world was going to look like. The concept of the next generation of the Acura NSX wouldn't come to fruition. Instead, a new hybrid generation of the NSX would materialize in the mid-2010s. Meanwhile, the Audi Le Mans Quattro would give way to the R8, which looked almost exactly the same. After two generations, the R8 has only just been discontinued. Of course, the zany V10-powered motorcycle concept that was the Dodge Tomahawk wouldn't become a production vehicle, either. March - Mercedes-Benz SL, Porsche 911 Custom versions of the Mercedes-Benz SL and the Porsche 911 adorned our March 2004 cover, showing off the incredible potential for unique custom builds for exotic cars. 4.0.3 April - Porsche Carrera GT Now one of the most legendary supercars ever and certainly one of the greatest achievements of the manufacturer, the Porsche Carrera GT was our April 2004 cover star. May - Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is the incredible roadgoing result of a racing collaboration between the two manufacturers, combining contemporary engineering expertise with cherished heritage. Today, over 20 years after this May 2004 cover, the SLR McLaren is a highly desirable and collector-worthy masterpiece. 4.0.3 June - Maserati MC12 Closely related to the legendary Ferrari Enzo, the Maserati MC12 featured head-turning looks and a V12 engine, giving Maserati a noteworthy halo supercar. Today, it's still one of the greatest moments in recent Maserati memory, and the inspiring predecessor of Maserati's current supercars and racing efforts, long after its June 2004 appearance on the cover of duPont REGISTRY. Not to mention, it's a highly desirable and exclusive vehicle to buy. July - Chevrolet Corvette C6 A new generation of the Corvette had dawned by the time duPont REGISTRY was ready to make its annual Corvette issue in 2004. This was the C6, which ditched the C5's beloved pop-up headlights in favor for fixed units, updated the design, and added various performance-oriented innovations. August - Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster Lamborghini gave its flagship V12 supercar at the time the droptop treatment with the introduction of the Murciélago Roadster for the 2005 model year, and it served as duPont REGISTRY's cover star in August 2004. September - Lotus Elise Lotus, known for its cult classic sports cars with enviable agility and racing-focused precision, had been absent from the US market for years, until it triumphantly returned with the second generation of the Elise, a favorite among enthusiasts to this day and the duPont REGISTRY cover star in September 2004. October - Chrysler ME Four-Twelve 2004 was a much different time than today. In the earlier years of the DaimlerChrysler era, many of us thought that one of, if not the fastest production car in the world, would wear a Chrysler badge, and it would be captivatingly beautiful as well. That car was the Chrysler ME Four-Twelve, which would have had a quad-turbocharged V12 engine and reached a top speed of 248 mph, if the dreams of its production weren't dashed. Still, the incredible concept starred on the cover of duPont REGISTRY's October 2004 issue. November - Noble M14 British performance car manufacturer Noble unveiled the M14, a prototype that would eventually be realized as the M15, combining a twin-turbo V6 and a high power-to-weight ratio to punch in the weight class of Ferraris and Porsches at the time. The elegant-looking and robust supercar was duPont REGISTRY's November 2004 cover star. 4.0.3 December - Gemballa Biturbo Shown with its butterfly doors open, a Gemballa Biturbo is featured on duPont REGISTRY's December 2004 cover. Our special 40th anniversary issue is out now!
