McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Maserati Unveils One-off MCPURA Cielo 'FROZEN MAGMA' at St. Moritz

I.C.E. (The International Concours of Elegance) St.Moritz has earned its place on the automotive calendar for doing things differently. With the Swiss Alps serving as a stunning backdrop every winter, the Alpine resort town, not too far from the Italian border, turns its frozen lake into a stage where performance, discretion, and spectacle all come together. Running Jan 30-31, this year’s event expands into a two-day Concours of Elegance in St. Moritz, opening with a private preview and followed by a dynamic parade across the ice. Categories range from Barchettas on the Lake to Birth of the Hypercar. Maserati has chosen this icy setting to debut the MCPURA Cielo FROZEN MAGMA, a one-off conceived through its bespoke Fuoriserie program, for this event. The Ai Aqua Rainbow paint shifts tone under light, moving between icy blues and silvery hues. Glossy orange accents sharpen the contrast, from the dreamline livery to the Trident badging and exterior lettering. Black lower facias and 20-inch Cyclonic wheels in gloss black keep the visual balance tight, while orange brake calipers add focus. Inside, the cabin features black Alcantara, lasered with Chevron graphics with orange stitching throughout. Carbon fiber trim reinforces the car’s track bias. A dedicated interior plaque on the center console reads, “Maserati Fuoriserie - THE I.C.E. 2026 - ONE OF ONE.” Power comes from the 630-horsepower Nettuno V6 that we experienced not too long ago in our exclusive review of the 2026 Maserati MCPura in Florida and the 2026 Maserati MCPura Cielo in Tuscany. Maserati Marks a Championship Year While Laying Groundwor...

Maserati Corse closed its 2025 campaign with results that underline how quickly the brand has reestablished itself as a serious force in modern GT racing. After returning to closed wheel competition only in 2023, the House of the Trident added another title to its record books. Driving the Maserati GT2 for LP Racing, Philippe Prette secured the Am Class championship in the GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli, repeating his 2024 success. He sealed the title by winning 10 of the 12 races on the calendar. On November 22, Prette collected the trophy at the SRO Motorsports Group Awards in Venice. We reported on this program earlier in the year. In February, a first drive of the Maserati GT2 Stradale showed how closely the road-legal derivative follows the race car’s DNA, engineered with clear track intent but calibrated for limited road use. " width="680"> That progress feeds directly into Maserati’s next phase. In 2026, the Italian marque will again line up in the GT2 European Series, with the season opening at Monza on May 30 and 31. More significantly, Maserati is joining the SRO GT Academy project announced during the most recent 24 Hours of Spa. The initiative introduces a new Silver class, awarding the Academy title to its winner. From 2027, a Maserati or another manufacturer will commit to a full season in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup, competing in either Silver or Pro Am. The Maserati GT2 is now eligible for more than 20 series, covering over 170 races across more than 100 race weekends each year. That expansion accelerated in 2025 with the launch of the Endurance Pack, broadening where and how the car can be campaigned across sprint and endurance formats. The United States becomes a larger part of that strategy in 2026. Back in October, Maserati brought the GT2 to the U.S. for the first time at GT America in Indianapolis, pairing its competitive debut with a broader paddock presence that included the GT2 Stradale and the track-only MCXtrema. For the first time, the International GT series will welcome both the Maserati GT2 and the MCXtrema in the GTX category. The season opens at Sebring from February 26 to March 1, followed by Road Atlanta, Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Road America, Watkins Glen, VIR, Laguna Seca, Barber, and Circuit of the Americas, closing November 5 to 8. Maserati brings a centenary celebration to Brussels. 2026 will be a special year for Maserati, as the historic Italian luxury car manufacturer celebrates the 100th anniversary of not only its iconic Trident emblem, but also the 100th anniversary of its presence in motorsport, with both of those things beginning in 1926. At the upcoming Brussels Motor Show, taking place in January, Maserati is bringing its 100th anniversary celebrations to the event, debuting special cars and showcasing its incredible lineup at the show. The new chapter of Maserati supercars, succeeding the Maserati MC20 that took the torch from the legendary MC12, the MCPURA Cielo will be on display in Brussels, showcasing its evolution of the MC20’s performance, including the Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine, as well as its Fuoriserie bespoke design details, like its stunning Ai Acqua Rainbow color. Maserati’s GranCabrio Folgore, a unique all-electric luxury performance grand touring convertible, will also be at the event, combining seating for four with an open-top, all-electric power, and a top speed of 180 mph. Maserati’s latest special edition of its iconic Grecale SUV, the Grecale Lumina Blu, will be showcased at the Brussels Motor Show, as well. It features an exclusive Night Interaction exterior, 21-inch wheels, yellow calipers, and a special yellow Trident adorning the C-pillar, along with an interior in Chocolate leather, burl wood details, and a panoramic roof. Maserati Celebrates Its 111th Anniversary

Maserati celebrates its 111th birthday ahead of another significant milestone. Recently, Maserati has had lots of reasons to celebrate. The “Maserati Meccanica Lirica” recently honored the return of production of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio to Maserati’s historic Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, and next year, the legendary Trident that serves as Maserati’s logo will celebrate its centenary. Coinciding with its debut in motorsport, the Trident is one of the most integral and recognizable parts of Maserati’s iconic brand, and its 100-year anniversary is the subject of anticipation from the manufacturer. However, there’s more reason for celebration, as the 111th anniversary of Maserati itself has come along, as Maserati is the longest-standing manufacturer in Italy’s legendary Motor Valley since it was founded by brothers Ettore, Ernesto, and Alfieri Maserati in 1914. Their other brother, Mario, eventually designed the Trident, which was inspired by Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune, and their last brother, Bindo, joined the Oficine Maserati in 1932. The first car to wear the iconic Maserati Trident was the Tipo 26, which made its debut at the 1926 Targa Florio race, and took first place in the up to 1.5-liter class, and Alfieri Maserati himself was behind the wheel. Maserati’s motorsport legacy would then go on to include wins at the Indianapolis 500, the Targa Florio, Formula 1, victories with the MC12 and the new GT2 in the modern era. Maserati Recaps Meccanica Lirica Celebrations In Modena

Maserati recaps a triumphant homecoming. In an important move for the historic Italian luxury brand, Maserati announced that it was bringing the production of two of its most iconic models, the GranTurismo and the GranCabrio, to its historic home of Modena, Italy. Imbuing its luxury performance grand tourers with Made-in-Italy craftsmanship excellence and the storied legacy of Maserati’s Viale Ciro Menotti plant, the models’ production returning to Modena is an important milestone, and certainly a reason to celebrate for Maserati. As such, Maserati brought a series of Maserati Meccanica Lirica celebrations to the city of Modena, bringing not only the brand and its employees to the celebration, but also the entire city out to welcome the production of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio home. The week of celebration opened at one of the most iconic venues in the city: Teatro Comunale Modena Pavarotti-Freni, where in collaboration with its audio partner Sonus faber, Maserati put on a unique performance that told the story of Maserati, involving the entire theater in the narrative. A dinner in the foyer of the theater concluded the inaugural event, with food from the Michelin-starred Massimo Bottura. The next day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the plant, where guests got the opportunity to to see the new features of the plant and the new assembly lines for the GranCabrio and GranTurismo, and also see the one-off Maserati GranTurismo Meccanica Lirica and GranCabrio Meccanica Lirica cars. Over the weekend, the Trident Experience, a two-day event, showcased Maserati excellence to over 100 European Maserati customers and Maserati Club Italia members. The city’s Piazza Roma played host to 50 Maseratis, the oldest of which was a 1959 Maserati GT Spyder 3500, with a special performance from Roberto Bolle at the plant later in the evening. A parade of 60 historic and modern Maseratis took place the next day, traversing across the city of Modena to the Panini Museum. The parade included ‘90s Ghiblis, a Sebring, an Indy, the MC20, and more. The parade reached its final destination: the Modena Autodromo. There, customers experienced test drives and hot laps in cars like the new Maserati GranTurismo and the GT2 Stradale. Throughout the city, Maserati took over iconic locations to celebrate its production homecoming, marking a triumphant return for the entire city of Modena with Maserati Meccanica Lirica. Maserati Unveils new "Meccanica Lirica" One-Offs

Maserati celebrates the reinforcement of its Italian heritage with two one-offs. Maserati is one of the most historic Italian luxury car manufacturers, with well over a century of heritage behind it, including motorsport heroes and some of the most coveted and celebrated cars of all time. The GranTurismo and GranCabrio represent the latest evolution of Maserati’s decades-long legacy of grand touring masterpieces, and Maserati has officially returned the production of the grand touring pair to the brand’s Modena plant, highlighting its commitment to its rich heritage and Made-in-Italy excellence. The milestone deserves celebration, and Maserati is doing exactly that with a Maserati Meccanica Lirica series of events in collaboration with Sonus faber as a main partner. The events bring together Maserati’s employees, customers, and the entire city of Modena together to celebrate the homecoming of two of Maserati’s most important models. However, a major highlight of the celebration is the debut of two special one-off Maseratis and a Fuoriserie customization pack. Those two one-off Maseratis are the new Maserati GranTurismo Meccanica Lirica One-Off and the new Maserati GranCabrio Meccanica Lirica One-Off, both based on the Trofeo versions of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio. Inspired by Modena’s famed opera house, Rosso Velluto and Oro Lirico are their exterior colors. Special 21-inch wheels, a gold Trident, and even a custom exhaust set the one-offs apart from their standard counterparts. The interiors combine leather, Alcantara, and real wood, with commemorative badging highlighting the special edition, as well. Inspired by the one-off models, Maserati has also debuted the Meccanica Lirica Pack from Fuoriserie, with many of the features and colors seen on the one-offs available upon request, including for the all-electric Folgore variants of the cars, save the exhaust, of course. With a stunning configuration, the two new one-offs from Maserati celebrate the production of two of Maserati’s most timeless masterpieces returning to Modena in style.
