McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The one area where the McLaren P1 and its predecessors really diverged is in the number of units sold. When the hypercar was announced, the famed supercar builders quickly sold every new McLaren P1. Within a few days, the entire production run of P1s, 375 examples, found homes in the world's best collections. McLaren P1 Price When we had one at a show, we are often asked: "How Much Is A McLaren P1?" When the order books were opened for US dealers, the McLaren P1 price was $1,150,000. To this day, the P1 retains legendary status as part of the historic hypercar Holy Trinity and as a successor to the McLaren F1, so expect values to rise for these amazing machines. And while there hasn't been a true McLaren P1 successor, the English automaker has revealed the Elva, Senna, and Speedtail. Each of these joins the P1 in the Ultimate Series but is of a different DNA. Though the P1 cost may be over $1 million, it delivers. If you're looking for a used McLaren P1 for sale, there aren't very many available, but for those that are, expect to pay over $1 million or over $2 million for a used McLaren P1 GTR price. Front of the McLaren P1 Side of the McLaren P1 Rear of the McLaren P1 McLaren P1 Review Driving in traffic, the amount of power provided by IPAS really depends on how much electrical energy is left in the battery pack. Located just behind the passenger cabin are six modules, composed of 324 battery cells. Unlike so many hybrids, the P1 does not use kinetic energy from the braking system to recharge the battery. One of the best aspects of any McLaren P1 for sale is the ability to divorce the aerodynamic, suspension, and hybrid systems. You can pick & choose every operating system to your liking. This level of flexibility was unprecedented and it served as a basis for competitors to follow. If it feels as though you are suffering from déjà vu, you are not alone. We saw this, in the early ‘90s, with McLaren’s mighty F1. Back then, such companies as Jaguar and Bugatti were vying for supercar supremacy through the title of the world’s fastest production car. To build a street-legal F1 car, Design Director Frank Stephenson was asked to shrink-wrap a functional and attractive body of carbon fiber around the chassis. The McLaren P1 called for several areas of the MonoCage to be exposed to the world. Not only does this save weight, it shows the one-piece chassis as a work of art. Sculped after countless hours in virtual modeling and the wind tunnel, the design allows the McLaren P1 top speed to be 217 mph. Rear of the McLaren P1 shooting flames from exhaust McLaren P1 Engine Taking the reins where the F1 left off, the McLaren P1 is an advanced combination of twin turbochargers and electric motor muscle. It starts with 12C’s 3.8- liter forced-induction V-8, an engine designed entirely in-house with dry-sump lubrication and a low-positioned flat-plane crankshaft. The turbochargers are new and run at 20 psi compared to 17 psi in earlier McLarens. With a few other tweaks for cooling and durability, the already amazing output of 616 horsepower has been raised even further. This allows the McLaren P1 hp to measure in at 727 horsepower at 7,500 rpm. But wait; there’s more! To drive the car directly for up to six miles, it draws on the power of a single electric motor, utilizing its 176 horsepower and 192 foot-pounds of torque to fill in the torque gaps during shifts, to drive the car directly for up to six miles, or for an explosion of power by way of the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) button. McLaren P1 Transmission In order to handle the massive power, Graziano transmission of Italy was asked to strengthen its 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The McLaren P1 includes the IPAS electric system that provides more power than many economy cars. But instead of a complex arrangement along with the McLaren P1 transmission, it is simply bolted to the left side of the engine. Driven directly by the transmission’s input shaft, it can send or recover electrical power to the High Voltage battery. So if you don’t need V8 power, a charged battery will offer 19 miles of silent, electric cruising. Side of the McLaren P1 in Gulf Livery McLaren P1 Details The large rear wing adjusts automatically to boost downforce. All examples will be produced in left-hand drive. Active aerodynamics produce up to 1,323 pounds of downforce, the most of any production car. McLaren P1 Brakes To stop such a powerful machine, McLaren turned to their Grand Prix brake supplier Akebono. The McLaren P1 brakes required a carbon-ceramic rotor capable of absorbing and dissipating 50% more energy than the brakes on its predecessors. The rotors are infused with silicon carbide, one of the hardest compounds ever created. While it does have a tendency to chew up brake pads, the rotors retain a mirror finish for years. This system runs cooler than other carbon-ceramic systems in normal driving. But if you put the spurs to your P1, they can operate 300* Fahrenheit above any other system. Why You Should Buy a McLaren P1 McLaren P1 Specs For those not familiar with the car, every McLaren P1 for sale is comprised of a carbon fiber monocoque, V8 engine, twin turbos, and a hybrid system. This recipe can be found only on the world's most potent cars, and McLaren delivers the best power-to-weight ratio on the market. With a seven-figure price, the original McLaren P1 MSRP is definitely representative of the insane power it holds. Riding on its hydraulic suspension, it has no sway bars to unsettle the corners. Engineers pared away all non-essential systems to allow the McLaren P1 top speed to reach 217 mph. The center control panel is sharply angled to the driver. Not only does this give quick access to change the aero and suspension settings, but it also reduces glare for long endurance races. You will be coddled in Alcantara-clad carbon fiber seats, and they arrive with provisions for racing harnesses. The same microsuede material complements the carbon fiber steering wheel. This ergonomic wheel has controls for the DRS and IPAS systems placed perfectly under your thumbs. If you aren’t racing, Meridian Audio offers a perfect soundstage with cinematic-quality audio. Perhaps the best feature of the McLaren P1 interior is its everyday practicality. You will be able to make small runs to the store with a 9-mile electric round-trip. Because every aspect of the hybrid system is hidden from view, your passenger might be taken aback by the prodigious horsepower. The composite structure also soaks up heat and vibrations found among its contemporaries. You will have plush leather and microfiber along with an optimal driving position and visibility. That is why many owners drive their P1 as often as possible. Another point of trivia is the lack of silly symbols. The buttons are written in English, the only language offered. McLaren P1 on the Nurburgring McLaren P1 Standout Features Like a giant Lego car, the body of the McLaren P1 consists of only 5 pieces. They are the front and rear clamshells, cockpit, and two doors. Directly a firewall behind the seats separates the High Voltage battery from the interior and it places the center of mass near the Z-axis of the car. This keeps it planted while cornering. No other hybrid has an IPAS mode. Every McLaren P1 for sale left the factory wearing Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires developed specifically for the car. Engineers sought to maximize grip from the rear wheels while also considering the weight balance of the car. Taking into account the roll center along with sprung and un-sprung mass, the McLaren P1 tires measure 245/35/19 on the front and 315/30/20 on the rear. The forged 1-piece wheels are popular upgrades for lesser McLarens, as not many extra sets were made. Instant Power Assist dumps all battery power into the electrified powertrain in an instant. If you have a slowpoke in front of you, hit the button and they will be in your rearview. The standard charger only takes 2 hours, but it only takes 10 minutes using a DC fast charger. The electric mode is limited to 99 mph, much faster than any other hybrid. McLaren P1 Successor The successor to the P1 has been announced as the W1. The 2025 McLaren W1 pays homage to its iconic predecessors, the P1 and F1, while also representing the start of a bold new chapter for the brand. Its name marks a turning point, and the cutting-edge technology packed into this $2.1 million hypercar—limited to just 399 units—hints at innovations that will shape McLaren’s future models. As such, practically every component on the 2025 McLaren W1 is new, starting with its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Although its displacement is identical to its predecessor's, it's an all-new engine designed to work alongside an electric motor. A lightened block, cylinder heads, aluminum pistons, and new twin-scroll turbochargers round out the list of significant changes. By itself, the W1's V8 generates 916 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque while spinning up to a 9,200-rpm redline. For context, the P1's total output, electric motor and all, maxed out at 903 hp. McLaren teases the next chapter in its groundbreaking performance lineage. While the manufacturer has a lineup full of incredible roadgoing supercars today, McLaren’s main focus is still creating vehicles that combine immense power with lightweight construction and incredible performance-oriented engineering to be on-track sensations. The McLarens that have done that in the most meaningful ways are the brand’s “1” cars. Currently, those are the McLaren F1 and the McLaren P1, which have begun a tradition of groundbreaking supercars. In their time, the F1 and P1 were instrumental in changing the automotive world, the F1 with its record-breaking speed, and the P1 with its hybrid innovation. In a new video, McLaren asks people who are central to its history, including racing drivers and experts, what makes a McLaren “1” car. That's right, Its completely made from LEGO! We've all heard the saying, "You never grow up, the toys just get bigger and more expensive", and LEGO has taken that to heart with its newest collaboration project with McLaren Automotive. As part of the release of the LEGO 3,893-piece McLaren P1 build set, the dynamic duo came together to build a life-size P1 using LEGO Technic pieces. This incredible achievement involved 342,817 pieces and weighs around 2,690lbs, marking a milestone of complexity for LEGO. With functional steering and an electric motor, the build can actually take on corners. The project took 23 specialists over 8,344 hours to complete, using 393 different LEGO Technic components. McLaren F1 team driver Lando Norris was tasked with the ultimate challenge: completing a lap around Silverstone in this unique car. Lando Norris successfully navigated the twists and turns of the famous British circuit in the LEGO McLaren P1 as a nod to McLaren's deep-rooted history in motorsport. The Silverstone track, measuring 3.66 miles, proved to be the perfect backdrop for this one-of-a-kind collaboration. McLaren Reveals New MSO Contrast Packs For The 2025 750S

McLaren’s latest supercar offers even more personalization. The new McLaren 750S, the successor to the iconic 720S, is the latest iteration of McLaren’s lightweight, high-performance supercar legacy. It boasts racing-derived engineering, luxury, and stunning design. McLaren has just announced that the design and luxury factor of the new 750S is going even further with the addition of new MSO options for the 2025 model year. New MSO Contrast Packs for the 2025 McLaren 750S supercar offer clients more colorful personalization and unique expression opportunities. 12 pre-configured themes are available, but custom combinations can be configured at the client’s request. Contrast Pack 1 features iconic paint colors not in the McLaren 750S’s typical palette. These are Volcano Red, Volcano Orange, Anniversary Orange, Solar Yellow, Napier Green, XP Green, Tokyo Pearl, Viola Viola, Dove Grey, Soho Grey, Tarmac Black, Alaskan Diamond White. These unique colors come with bespoke brake caliper paint and pinstriping on the mirror caps. However, Contrast Pack 2 offers even more customization on top of the offerings of Contrast Pack 1. Pack 2 adds the option for full Alcantara interior upholstery with colorful accents and MSO headrests. In addition, the range of options beyond the Contrast Packs for the McLaren 750S is expanding for the 2025 model year. These options include Stealth Badging and Carbon Fiber fenders and louvers. Also new for the 2025 model year is a start/stop button finished in Papaya, McLaren’s traditional racing color.
