McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The 2025 24 Hours Of Le Mans weekend is upon us and in a bold move that blurs the lines between factory racing and customer experience, McLaren has announced Project: Endurance, a highly exclusive opportunity for a handful of buyers to not just get their hands on a true Le Mans Hypercar, but actually savor the world of high-stakes endurance racing themselves. McLaren's Project: Endurance The initiative, developed jointly by McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing, Project Endurance, will develop a limited run of customer Le Mans Hypercars alongside McLaren’s 2027 WEC factory entries. These machines will be race-bred and powered by a twin-turbo V6 hybrid that sends power to the rear wheels, just like the LMDh racer that McLaren United AS will field at Le Mans. Renowned Italian chassis experts, Dallara, who also supply INDYCAR, are the key technical partner. “This isn’t about replicas or tributes. It’s about giving a select few the keys to something real. An authentic race car. A front-row seat to history in the making.” - Nick Collins, CEO of McLaren Group Holdings But ownership is only part of the story, as Project Endurance also grants direct access to the inner workings of the factory racing program. Customers will join McLaren at everything from test sessions and development briefings to trackside action at Le Mans itself. Buyers will gain an unprecedented insight into the only manufacturer to have won the Triple Crown of Motorsport: the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and Le Mans, a win that came for McLaren in 1995 with an F1 GTR. To celebrate 30 years since that win, McLaren even launched a special edition 750S Le Mans Edition. But come 2027, and the folks in papaya have ambitions to accomplish the Triple Crown yet again, this time in a single season. “We’ve proven we can win in Formula 1, IndyCar, and Le Mans. View All McLarens For Sale The Impact Of The Hypercar Class McLaren’s announcement comes at a critical time for the sport, where earlier this week, the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) said that they are committing to the Hypercar platform until 2032. This move will continue to draw even more luxury and performance automotive brands to the world of the top tier of endurance racing. We’re already seeing this trend take off with a slew of announcements, like the 1-of-1 Porsche 963 RSP commissioned for Roger Penske, the track-only Valkyrie LM that will allow 10 lucky customers the chance to own and experience the closest thing to an Aston Martin LMH racer. Ferrari has a similar program with its Client-Spec 499P Modificata, which debuted in March last year. Besides McLaren, Genesis, and Ford will also join the WEC Hypercar action at Le Mans in 2027. Prices and allocation details about McLaren's Project: Endurance remain under wraps, but for now, for those fortunate to get into the program, it will be a backstage pass to one of motorsport’s most elite stages, as the hypercar era begins to heat up. Thirty years ago, at a rain-soaked Le Mans, McLaren made history on June 18, 1995. In its very first appearance in the iconic 24 Hours endurance race in France, the folks from Woking stunned the racing world when JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas, and Masanori Seikya’s 1995 McLaren F1 GTR #59 took victory, with three other McLarens finishing in the top five. 1995 is also significant for McLaren, because the British marque finally bagged the elusive Triple Crown: Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500, and Le Mans. As a racing team and manufacturer, no one else has since achieved this feat. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the British sports car maker has created the 750S Le Mans. A special model limited to just 50 examples, this is a tribute to one of McLaren’s most glorious periods in motorsports. At the core of this Le Mans special is McLaren’s High Downforce (HDK) Package that echoes the F1 LM of the ‘90s. Designed by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), it significantly ramps up the character of the already formidable 750S. A reworked front bumper with enlarged carbon fiber splitter, a raised carbon-fiber active rear spoiler with sculpted endplates, and a body-colored under-wing panel with black louvers come together to boost overall downforce by 10%. This special edition McLaren proudly wears its legacy. Choose between two colors, Le Mans Gray, the same as the race-winning #59 F1 GTR or the much louder, McLaren Orange. A gloss black carbon-fiber roof scoop, titanium exhaust finishers and five-spoke LM wheels are a direct nod to the Le Mans winning icon as well. You also get gold brake calipers, red McLaren logos, color-detailed wheel center caps, and Le Mans branding throughout, making for a subtle but unmistakable aesthetic. Being a special edition, you have several model-exclusive options like carbon fiber hood air intakes, door mirror casings, side air intakes, and rear air intakes. Inside, two themes are available: Carbon-fiber Black Alcantara with Dove Gray accents or Carbon Black paired with McLaren Orange. Additional highlights include Soft Grain leather headrests with Le Mans branding and bespoke floor mats. A dedicated plaque in the front luggage compartment, that specifically lists the 1995 Le Mans win and Triple Crown triumph, will remind you that what you’re looking at is something special. “This is not just about the past, it’s about momentum. The 750S Le Mans arrives as we return to Le Mans in 2025 with the GT3 EVO and look ahead to 2027, when we rejoin the top-tier Hypercar class.” - Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer, McLaren Automotive’s Chief Commercial Officer Performance comes courtesy of McLaren’s award-winning 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 750PS or 739 horsepower on tap, which is nearly 70 horsepower more than the F1 LM’s 671 HP, courtesy of its gold-lined naturally-aspirated V12 engine. Paired with the motorsport-inspired Monocage II Chassis and Proactive Chassis Control III. With the HDK in the mix, and expect it to be more aggressive and responsive than ever before. Although McLaren hasn’t specified the exact weight saving, expect anywhere between 110 to 190 pounds less than the standard 750S’ 3,000 pounds. This is still about 600 pounds more than the F1 LM, with most of the weight coming from the dual-clutch transmission, active suspension components, and modern safety systems. But for a street-legal machine, the 750S is still one of the most formidable models in the class. So there you have it: a past victory, a present masterpiece, a future target, and McLaren’s current performance in F1. Two McLaren Solus GTs shut down The Thermal Club. There's no denying that supercars and hypercars are engineered purely to give owners the closest experience to driving an actual racecar in a competitive setting. But what happens when a leading manufacturer teams up with its Formula 1 racing division to design a purpose-built, track-only hypercar for its clients? McLaren has perfected this forward-thinking approach for the weekend track warrior with its Solus GT, a limited-edition single-seater with a central closed cockpit and a fighter jet-style canopy. In a display that truly epitomizes one of the most glamorous grand prix weekends on the Formula 1 calendar, a McLaren Solus GT valued at nearly $4 million was hoisted onto the deck of a luxury superyacht, Sarastar, in front of captivating onlookers in Monte Carlo’s harbor. The Solus GT, a single-seater track-only hypercar limited to just 25 examples worldwide, packs a 5.2-liter naturally-aspirated V10 engine that produces 829 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. With a high-revving 10,000 rpm redline and a curb weight of 2,057 pounds (dry) owing to its carbon-fiber monocoque, it gets to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and its top speed is rated at 200 mph. One of the most striking features of the Solus GT is its fighter-jet style canopy, which has been enhanced on this particular example owing to its special livery. When supercar and hypercar manufacturers debut their latest and greatest creations, we, as passionate enthusiasts, are often too starstruck by cutting-edge design and performance to really think about what it took to get to the finish line. And by that, I mean the rigorous developmental and testing phases endured before giving it the final stamp of approval, before unleashing it on public roads. Suppose you're one of the car fanatics who enjoys a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into creating supercars directly from the source. In that case, McLaren Automotive's new 'Behind the Badge' series will scratch that itch as McLaren engineers break down the processes of bringing models like the 765LT to market. Kicking off its new short video series, McLaren takes a deep dive into vehicle body testing and the extreme conditions the brand challenges its cars with to ensure practicality and functionality. McLaren Body Engineer Jon Preece sits down to further explain the more than 450 tests that each McLaren faces, from experimental phases to final checks on the production line. In addition to off-site testing in remote areas of the world, the McLaren headquarters houses a state-of-the-art atmospheric chamber that stresses the vehicle body through intense temperature and humidity swings, ranging ambient temperatures from -40°F to 104°F in 90 minutes. McLaren to Exit Formula E After 2024/25 Season Following ...

McLaren Racing has announced that it will withdraw from the all-electric FIA Formula E World Championship at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, following a strategic review of its global motorsport activities. The decision ends a short but impactful chapter for the iconic British team in the all-electric series and preludes its plans to contest the World Endurance Championship, that includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 2027. Since entering Formula E, McLaren – which is currently leading the Formula 1 World Championship – has brought its hallmark focus of innovation and excellence to the highest-profile electric racing series. Despite its brief tenure, the team made headlines when Sam Bird won the Sao Paolo E-Prix in 2024 with a thrilling last-lap pass, while 19-year-old Taylor Barnard claimed pole position at the Jeddah E-Prix earlier this year, becoming the youngest polesitter in the series' history. In a statement, McLaren emphasized its ongoing commitment to performing at the highest level through the final race of the season. “The team remains fully committed to fighting for success until the very last race,” the release stated, praising the squad’s recent progress and competitiveness. While acknowledging Formula E’s continued significance in global motorsport, McLaren cited the need for a more focused approach across its racing operations. By streamlining its program, the company aims to unlock new growth opportunities and deliver greater value to its partners across key markets. Zak Brown, McLaren Racing’s CEO, said: “We are immensely proud of what we have achieved in Formula E and the series plays an integral part in the overall motorsport landscape, but the time is right to explore other opportunities that more closely align with McLaren Racing’s overall strategic direction – including our 2027 entry into the FIA World Endurance Championship. For now, we are focused on setting this great team up for future success by working towards securing a new owner.” McLaren took over the Formula E outfit that was previously the works Mercedes EQ entry in 2022 with backing from Saudi Arabia’s NEOM ‘future city’. This race team, which uses powertrains supplied by Nissan, will now require another rebrand, and fresh investment once its current NEOM deal ends. From 2027, McLaren will be the only racing team competing in Formula 1, IndyCar, and the WEC. With victories at the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans already to its name, McLaren remains the sole team to have achieved motorsport’s elusive Triple Crown – a feat it now intends to chase once more. The W1 is one step closer to future production and deliveries. Often stored in private collections and occasionally driven to keep everything in check, it's frequently forgotten that supercars and hypercars are engineered as production road cars with the ability to become daily drivers. A statement from the British-based car maker said: “As a clear demonstration of the Group’s intent to move at pace, McLaren Automotive’s portfolio will be expanded into new product categories, details of which will be announced later this year.” While Forseven Holdings is a relative newcomer to the automotive landscape, it brings with it a team of experienced industry professionals and a bold vision to “permanently transform the luxury automotive industry.” The merger blends Forseven’s electric vehicle innovation with McLaren’s legacy of design and performance, creating opportunities for a more diverse vehicle lineup that can reach new global audiences.
