McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. MSO Creates Exclusive Artura 1000GP Honoring McLaren Racing's 1,000th Grand Prix Ahead Of Monaco GP

McLaren Automotive has revealed the Artura 1000GP by McLaren Special Operations, a strictly limited 10-car edition timed to the constructor's 1,000th Formula 1 Grand Prix start at this weekend's 2026 Monaco race. Featuring a bespoke exterior livery drawn directly from the MCL40 race car that Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will campaign in Monaco. The centrepiece is a fragmented, geometric papaya graphic applied across the hood, its angular, pixelated forms resolving into the numerals "1000" when viewed from directly above. The same graphic treatment continues along the lower body sides, with a standalone "1000 GP" badge positioned just ahead of the rear wheel arch. Mirror casings on both sides carry matching orange detailing, while a thin papaya pinstripe traces the front splitter and rear diffuser, referencing heritage liveries from earlier chapters in the team's history. McLaren Reveals New MCL-HY & MCL-HY GTR Hypercars

McLaren’s story as a manufacturer was written in the world of motorsport. In fact, it took nearly 30 years after McLaren’s establishment for a road car to wear the name, and that was the groundbreaking, legendary F1, which simultaneously dominated the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Alongside the brand’s involvement in series like Formula 1 and IndyCar, endurance racing is a cornerstone in McLaren’s heritage, and the manufacturer is returning to it in a big way. Earlier, McLaren announced the name of its upcoming top-class endurance racing hypercar, the MCL-HY, and that car has now been revealed, along with the MCL-HY GTR, the Project: Endurance track car for clients. The MCL-HY is set to race in the 2027 FIA WEC, which includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it’s part of McLaren’s ambitions to claim the coveted “Triple Crown” of motorsport as it has done before, dominating Le Mans, the Monaco Grand Prix, and the Indianapolis 500. The test livery of the MCL-HY is inspired by the McLaren M6A, as founder Bruce McLaren wanted the car to compete in Le Mans as the M6GT, indicating McLaren’s longstanding heritage in sports car racing. McLaren Confirms MCL-HY As Name Of WEC Hypercar

McLaren’s roots as a brand are deeply steeped in the world of motorsport, and Le Mans was the stage for one of its most formative triumphs. The McLaren F1 GTR won the 24 Hours of Le Mans on its first outing in the prestigious endurance competition in 1995, and since then, the already celebrated racing legacy that McLaren boasted has only grown greater. Now, McLaren is on the cusp of returning to Le Mans as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship, and it’s doing so in the top class with a hypercar aimed at taking the overall win. That hypercar, along with a client variant, has been previewed already with “Project: Endurance,” but now, an official name has been given to both the race car and its client racing variant. The race car will be called the MCL-HY, and the customer car will be called the MCL-HY GTR. Destined for the 2027 FIA WEC, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the MCL-HY heralds a new era of endurance for McLaren, one which will hopefully carry on the legacy of the legendary F1 GTR. Meanwhile, the MCL-HY GTR will simultaneously offer clients a track car and a corresponding track day program with exclusive access to a new age of McLaren sports car racing. While the naming conventions of the MCL-HY match those of McLaren’s Formula 1 cars, the MCL-HY GTR also takes on a cherished legacy nomenclature. McLaren Racing completed its clean sweep of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championships in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, with Lando Norris adding the Drivers’ title to its already-claimed Constructors’ crown. And while the team basks in its glory, CEO Zak Brown is pulling back the curtain on his own rise to the pinnacle of global motorsports. His new autobiography, Seven Tenths of a Second, explores the high-pressure decision-making, commercial savvy, and relentless competitive drive that helped revive one of racing’s most storied teams. Brown’s career arc is as unconventional as it is impressive. Rather than reaching the top step as a driver, he ascended through the business ranks, leveraging his marketing instincts and unshakable love of racing. After joining McLaren as executive director of McLaren Technology Group in 2016, he was later appointed CEO of McLaren Racing, where he helped transform the team from a dormant powerhouse into a modern Formula 1 juggernaut. His leadership culminated in back-to-back Constructors’ Championships in 2024 and 2025, propelled by the balanced pairing of Norris and Piastri, one of the strongest driver duos in the sport. “The name of the book, Seven Tenths, comes back to Abu Dhabi in 2024,” Brown tells our duPont REGISTRY Talks podcast. “It took us all year, 1,400 people, lots of grands prix, you can do all this preparation, and yet it came down to our final pit stop. Had we been seven tenths of a second slower, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz would have come into our DRS range and probably passed us and cost us the championship. I'd like to think Lando would have passed him back, but I'm glad we didn't need to find out!” Moments like that pit stop – the razor-thin margins between triumph and defeat – form the spine of Brown’s story: “I’ve been born for 53 years, at McLaren for nine years, and it all came down to seven tenths of a second. And really, what that means is everything matters – in business and in life. Lando Norris Seals His First F1 Championship Title in Abu...

The 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix closed out a 24-race season that belonged to one man. While Max Verstappen won the race, the spotlight was on Lando Norris in what was a spectacular season finale. Third place under the lights at the Yas Marina circuit was all he needed, and a P3 finish at the chequered flag added 15 points to bring his season total to 423. Verstappen’s win gave him 25 points and brought him to 421, missing what could have been his fifth world title by only two points. Oscar Piastri crossed the line in second to collect 18 points, ending with 410. Lando is the 8th driver to win a world title for the team based in Woking, and with that, McLaren ended a 13-year wait for a driver’s title, the first since fellow Briton Lewis Hamilton’s emotional championship victory in Sao Paulo back in 2008. View this post on Instagram A post shared by FORMULA 1® (@f1) The constructor’s championship was already settled in Singapore, with McLaren locking it down early, and Abu Dhabi became the stage for a driver's title shootout. Verstappen defended hard into Turn 1 and controlled the race from the start. Behind him, Piastri delivered what many will remember as the pass of the season, sweeping around Norris on Hard tyres with full commitment. He lost second to his teammate at the start, kept calm, held pace, and built a race around one priority: finish on the podium, and it worked. McLaren deserves credit for what was a clean weekend. Strategy came together without confusion, and the pit wall made calls with confidence. Piastri rolled the dice by starting on Hard tyres, committing to a long first stint and a single stop. They expected a Safety Car, and it never came, but the plan still held. Verstappen controlled the lead early from Medium tyres and also ran a single stop to Hards. The race settled into a two-front fight, yet Verstappen was never under real threat. Piastri held second comfortably, which let Norris run his own tempo without defending heavily from behind. Fourth place for Ferrari is still commendable, as it shows improvement late in the season. The gap to George Russell in fifth was over 25 seconds, which highlights what the team could have done if this pace had arrived sooner. They trail 71 points in the Constructors standings. You can see room to improve before 2026 begins. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton gave fans something to follow from deeper in the field. He started 16th on the grid and climbed to eighth. Alonso finished sixth, Ocon seventh. Nico Hulkenberg and Lance Stroll rounded out the points. McLaren's momentum over the weekend carried into the paddock and beyond in Abu Dhabi. RM Sotheby’s sale on Friday saw an ex-Brunei 1994 McLaren F1 sold for $25.3 million. For the very first time, McLaren Racing also offered three yet-to-be-raced competition cars as part of its Triple Crown offering. Ayrton Senna’s 1991 MP4/6/1 was also on display, awaiting a private sale in Dubai later this week. Abu Dhabi marked the final race for the current ground-effect Formula 1 grand prix cars. A massive reset arrives next season in 2026, with Audi and Cadillac joining the grid. Engine formats change, aero rules shift, and a new competitive landscape forms. McLaren Clinches 2025 F1 Constructors’ Title in Singapore...

George Russell delivered one of his finest Formula 1 drives under the floodlights of Marina Bay on Sunday, taking victory at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix and securing his fifth career win, and second this season. For a driver who famously crashed out here two years ago, this was redemption at last, and from lights out to the checkered flag, Russell led round 18 of the 2025 season, with confidence. The race began with tension as Verstappen lined up on the front row on soft tires, banking on an early advantage. However, George on Mediums didn’t flinch, and Verstappen’s sluggish start gave him control into Turn 1, where chaos unfolded behind. Both McLarens went wheel to wheel, and Lando managed to get past Oscar Piastri on the climb to P3, but made contact with both Max and Oscar, damaging his front wing end plate. For a moment there, McLaren’s title hopes looked shaky. Piastri brushed the wall and avoided disaster by inches, and both managed to keep it together on Singapore’s narrow street circuit. Race control reviewed the incident but called it hard racing. Norris hung on to Verstappen’s gearbox, but the Red Bull’s traction and straight-line speed managed to hold off the McLaren. Norris called the shots on an early pitstop, a perfect 2.1 seconds on lap 27 switching onto hards. The following lap, Piastri’s pitstop was slower, as the left rear gun jammed, costing him precious seconds. George managed a flawless race, crossing the chequered flag after 62 gruelling laps, with Max in P2 and Lando rounding up the podium places in P3. Piastri came in fourth, securing McLaren’s second consecutive Constructors’ Championship. There was also plenty of action in the midfield and outside the points. Further back, Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressed in fifth, executing a late overtake on Charles Leclerc. Ferrari were dealing with chronic brake overheating, with Leclerc in sisxth and Hamilton in eigth, both fighting the Singapore heat. Fernando Alonso scored seventh for Aston Martin, Oliver Bearman earned ninth for Haas, and Carlos Sainz climbed from the pit lane to tenth. With the Constructors’ title wrapped up, we’re heading to COTA next, two weeks from now, and the McLaren duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, lead the Drivers’ Championship with 336 and 314 points each. Their dominance is statistical proof of a historic run. Such has been McLaren’s form that they're leving Singapore with 650 points, exactly double Mercedes. In fact, for the first time since Senna and Berger in the early nineties, Woking has gone back-to-back. McLaren now has ten Constructors’ titles to its name, moving past Williams to second all-time, behind Ferrari’s sixteen. McLaren’s 2025 campaign ties them to Red Bull’s 2023 record for the earliest title clinch, with seven 1-2 finishes, twelve wins, and fourteen podiums apiece between Piastri and Norris. we’ve got six races to go, before the 2025 season concludes in Abu Dhabi. The 2025 24 Hours Of Le Mans weekend is upon us and in a bold move that blurs the lines between factory racing and customer experience, McLaren has announced Project: Endurance, a highly exclusive opportunity for a handful of buyers to not just get their hands on a true Le Mans Hypercar, but actually savor the world of high-stakes endurance racing themselves. McLaren's Project: Endurance The initiative, developed jointly by McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing, Project Endurance, will develop a limited run of customer Le Mans Hypercars alongside McLaren’s 2027 WEC factory entries. These machines will be race-bred and powered by a twin-turbo V6 hybrid that sends power to the rear wheels, just like the LMDh racer that McLaren United AS will field at Le Mans. Renowned Italian chassis experts, Dallara, who also supply INDYCAR, are the key technical partner. “This isn’t about replicas or tributes. It’s about giving a select few the keys to something real. An authentic race car. Customers will join McLaren at everything from test sessions and development briefings to trackside action at Le Mans itself. Buyers will gain an unprecedented insight into the only manufacturer to have won the Triple Crown of Motorsport: the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500, and Le Mans, a win that came for McLaren in 1995 with an F1 GTR. To celebrate 30 years since that win, McLaren even launched a special edition 750S Le Mans Edition. But come 2027, and the folks in papaya have ambitions to accomplish the Triple Crown yet again, this time in a single season. “We’ve proven we can win in Formula 1, IndyCar, and Le Mans. View All McLarens For Sale The Impact Of The Hypercar Class McLaren’s announcement comes at a critical time for the sport, where earlier this week, the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) said that they are committing to the Hypercar platform until 2032. This move will continue to draw even more luxury and performance automotive brands to the world of the top tier of endurance racing. We’re already seeing this trend take off with a slew of announcements, like the 1-of-1 Porsche 963 RSP commissioned for Roger Penske, the track-only Valkyrie LM that will allow 10 lucky customers the chance to own and experience the closest thing to an Aston Martin LMH racer. Ferrari has a similar program with its Client-Spec 499P Modificata, which debuted in March last year. Besides McLaren, Genesis, and Ford will also join the WEC Hypercar action at Le Mans in 2027. Prices and allocation details about McLaren's Project: Endurance remain under wraps, but for now, for those fortunate to get into the program, it will be a backstage pass to one of motorsport’s most elite stages, as the hypercar era begins to heat up. McLaren Returns To Le Mans After 26 Years With The New GT...

McLaren makes a glorious return to the most prestigious racing stage. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is undoubtedly one of the world’s most respected and feared racing venues, with 100 years of history forging legends and serving as the setting for unforgettable motorsport stories. One of the most prominent is that of McLaren’s victories, when in its debut at the 1995 Le Mans race, McLaren achieved the legendary ‘Triple Crown,’ winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Monaco Grand Prix, and Indianapolis 500, all in the same season. McLaren would continue to be a force of nature at the 24 Hours of Le Mans until 1998, and 26 years later, the celebrated British name in the motorsport world has returned to the revered challenge with its GT3 EVO race cars. Based on the 750S and sharing the new McLaren supercar’s design, the GT3 EVO takes after the McLaren F1 GTR, which wasn’t designed as a race car but, with McLaren’s racing heritage, needed very little modification to dominate the Le Mans grid. The same goes for the GT3 EVO, which takes after the McLaren 750S’s racing-derived technology and engineering to fight for victory at Le Mans. The same 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powers the 750S powers the GT3 EVO, and the power is restricted to meet the GT3 class requirements. Three McLaren GT3 EVO cars will be racing at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, ending a 26-year hiatus and bringing the legendary legacy of McLaren’s 24 Hours of Le Mans performance to the modern era.
