Over a decade ago, Mercedes-Benz introduced the Mercedes-AMG GT. The first generation of the AMG GT arrived as a two-door coupe, which was then followed by a four-door coupe with a range of available powertrains. However, the second generation of the Mercedes-AMG GT offered a 2+2 seating layout for the coupe, while also offering multiple powertrains for the coupe. Meanwhile, the four-door coupe was reimagined, emerging recently as an electric vehicle and debuting a new AMG.EA all-electric vehicle architecture.

Making use of axial flux motors in its drivetrain, the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is immensely powerful in its pinnacle trim, and its performance potential brings AMG’s portfolio to new heights. However, Mercedes-AMG didn’t stop there, as another new model has just been revealed that expands the AMG GT lineup even further and adds a second model to the AMG.EA platform’s repertoire.

That is the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV. It’s the first full-size SUV to be developed fully in-house by Mercedes-AMG, and it combines the high-performance innovation and painstaking engineering that the AMG.EA platform boasts, and combines it with the practicality of an SUV body style. After 59 years, the new model marks an important milestone in AMG’s history, and, arriving at US Mercedes-Benz dealerships in summer 2027 for the 2028 model year, the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV will feature three variants, each catering to a range of performance and luxury demands.

The range-topping model, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SUV, boasts a peak power output of 1,153 horsepower, like the AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe. With three axial flux motors and Formula 1-derived technology, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SUV is capable of an incredible 2.4-second 0-60 time, reaching 124 mph from a standstill in just 6.8 seconds, and topping out at a limited 168 mph.

Meanwhile, the other two variants of the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV are the AMG GT 53 SUV and the AMG GT 55 SUV. The GT 53 features a 106-kWh battery, while the 55 and 63 feature a 128-kWh battery. With fast-charging capability available for both, all three models are capable of adding hundreds of miles of range in as little as ten minutes.

Meanwhile, the driving experience of the new 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is enhanced with features like the AMGFORCE Sport+ driving mode, recreating the sound experience of an AMG V8 or six-cylinder engine, the optional AMG RACE ENGINEER feature that allows drivers to precisely tailor the vehicle’s character, the AEROKINETICS system that optimizes efficiency at lower speeds and performance at higher speeds, and several more. With its tri-motor drivetrain, the AMG GT 63 SUV features 1,153 horsepower, and the AMG GT 55 SUV uses the same layout to deliver 805 horsepower. A dual-motor all-wheel drive system is available for the AMG GT 53, which features 536 horsepower.

The design of the new 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV relates it to the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The interior features a panoramic glass roof, which is equipped with SKY CONTROL for occupants to switch between transparent and opaque modes, while luxurious materials, Burmester sound, ample room for front and rear passengers, and MANUFAKTUR customization potential offer the elegance that Mercedes-AMG vehicles are known for alongside performance.

As the first Mercedes-AMG SUV developed entirely in-house by AMG, and an electric luxury performance SUV with over 1,000 horsepower on tap in its pinnacle form, the new Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is a milestone in AMG’s legacy, combining innovation, luxury, unfathomable performance, and a practical body style.
