McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Jacob & Co. Unveils The Fastest Tourbillon Ever

There’s no quiet way to introduce a watch like the Jacob & Co. God of Time, but beneath the dial design and precious metal, there’s a genuinely interesting mechanical idea at work. The headline claim is simple enough: this is the fastest tourbillon ever made, completing one full rotation every four seconds. That’s roughly 15 times faster than the classic one-minute tourbillon most collectors and enthusiasts grew up studying under a loupe. Rather than treating the tourbillon as a historical milestone, Jacob & Co. uses it here as a proving ground, asking what happens when you push one of watchmaking’s oldest complications well beyond its comfort zone. Making that kind of speed possible required a movement built specifically for the challenge. The hand-wound Caliber JCAM60 centers itself on an ultra-light titanium tourbillon carriage that weighs just 0.27 grams, reducing inertia enough to survive rapid rotations. A constant force mechanism operating at one-sixth of a second helps control delivery, keeping the tourbillon spinning consistently across a 60-hour power reserve. Interestingly, the movement itself beats at a familiar 3 Hz, which makes the four-second tourbillon feel even more out of place, in a good way. Visually, the God of Time ties into storytelling as much as mechanics. The dial features a handcrafted, three-dimensional rose gold sculpture of Chronos, the Greek god of time, positioned as if he were holding the high-speed tourbillon in place. Set against blue aventurine, the design resembles a miniature sculpture more than a traditional watch dial. The 44.5 mm rose gold case draws inspiration from Ionic Greek temple pillars, tying the mythological theme together. Limited to 60 pieces and priced at $360,000, the God of Time is a reminder that even the most established complications can still be rethought. 1,300HP BYD Yangwang U9 EV Supercar Makes Its U.S. Debut in Miami

In today’s automotive world, the idea of becoming a carmaker isn’t nearly as far-fetched as it once was. The days of massive manufacturers completely dominating the market are fading, creating space for smaller, independent marques to step out of the shadows. The team at BYD (Build Your Dreams) is proving that in the headlines with its ground-breaking Yangwang U9 supercar, which has already set new world records for top speed (308.3mph) and Nürburgring lap times for an EV. And while future owners may expect a 2 to 3 year wait time to secure their very own example, because of past history with other supercars and hypercars, BYD is already setting expectations as the very first Yangwang U9 in the Western Hemisphere has landed in Miami. The news comes courtesy of entrepreneur and influencer Richard Skelhorn, who shared the reveal and backstory of acquiring the 3,000+ horsepower EV supercar on Instagram with his 212,000 fans and followers. The quarter-million-dollar U9 was originally purchased back in August from Shanghai, China, and later shipped to Dubai, where it’s been registered and officially calling home. The BYD Yangwang U9 is now in Miami as a tourist, having made the journey from the UAE to the U.S. for a short 12-month period before returning to its registered country. In the Instagram clip, he triggers BYD’s wild “Jump Mode,” showing off the car’s advanced DiSus-X suspension as it quite literally hops off the ground. As mentioned earlier, BYD has already accomplished numerous feats with the U9, even before most customers have been united with their dream specs. The Yangwang U9 is built around a wild quad-motor setup, with each wheel independently controlled thanks to BYD’s e4 platform, allowing for serious torque vectoring and stability at the limit. Track-Only Apollo EVO Hypercar Enters Production

We're just over a week into 2026, and one of the most extreme hypercar makers has dropped something significant on Instagram. Apollo Automobil confirmed that the first production Apollo EVO will be delivered later this year, with Chassis #01 already in production. Looking back at Apollo’s roots, the modern brand traces its lineage back to Gumpert, the early 2000s German automaker known for building uncompromising, track-focused machines that ignored convention. That DNA carried forward when Apollo reemerged in 2017 with the Intensa Emozione, a street-legal hypercar limited to just 10 examples. Each car was bespoke, named, and built around its original owner. Power comes courtesy of a Ferrari-derived 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 producing 780 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox. 0 to 60 mph happens in 2.7 seconds, top speed is 208 mph, and pricing starts at $2,670,000. Power is up, now pushing 800 horsepower from a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V12 fed through an additional prominent roof scoop, again driving the rear wheels through a sequential gearbox. A 3D printed titanium exhaust sounds the part, saves weight, and manages heat, while Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide predictable grip and easy replacement logistics. Underneath sits an all-carbon fiber monocoque weighing just 364 pounds, helping keep overall mass near 2,866 pounds. Compared to the IE, the EVO is 15 percent stiffer and 10 percent lighter. That stiffness-to-weight balance should respond and improve tire loading consistency over long sessions. Extensive venting and exposed rear elements also point to a focus on cooling and thermal stability, critical when you are running sustained laps. The active aero package is, without a doubt, extreme, further highlighted on this bronze example, but it is also functionally and is designed to generate motorsport-grade downforce at speed (with some sources citing up to 6,600 pounds of downforce). This should let you brake later, carry more mid-corner load, and stay stable through fast sections. The car sits extremely low with a cab-forward stance, with a fighter-jet-like canopy and almost no front overhang, with air drawn through the nose, fed into deep side channels, and expelled through an open rear architecture, with the big highlight at the rear being the six illuminated fins. With this track-focused variant, expect broad setup adjustability and motorsport-grade safety, supported directly by the factory through the Apollo STUDIO program. Subaru Revives the Manual WRX STI At The 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon

Subaru has not shown a real STi (Subaru Tecnica International) badge on a production-ready sedan in four years. That changed earlier today at the Tokyo Auto Salon with the reveal of the 2026 Subaru WRX STi Sport♯ Prototype, which was unveiled alongside STi-tuned versions of the Levorg and WRX S4, plus active race programs from Super Taikyu to Japanese rally. It comes just days after Subaru teased a potential WRX STI. Now this is not the full return of the WRX STi as you once knew it. Instead, Subaru is presenting a Japan market-focused interpretation that brings the six-speed manual back to the domestic lineup for the first time in the current generation. Visually, the car looks the part with the World Rally Blue paint, STi badges on the grille and trunk, cherry red accents along the bumpers and side skirts, and gold Brembo brakes sitting behind 19-inch wheels, Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires sized at 245 35R19, and ZF electronically controlled dampers tuned by STI. Underneath, it borrows heavily from existing high-spec WRX variants, including electronically adjustable dampers and a familiar chassis setup. Power comes from the turbocharged 2.4-liter FA24 boxer four, already used across the WRX range. While exact Power figures remain unconfirmed at this point, STi adds chassis bracing, dedicated tuning, and supporting hardware designed for sustained performance. The cars famously use turbocharged boxer engines and symmetrical All Wheel Drive to create traction, balance, and durability. The low-mounted boxer four lowered the center of gravity, reduced vibrations, and delivered predictable handling in poor conditions. That formula carried Subaru from the early Impreza WRX through legends like the limited-run 22B and into the modern era. The 1992 Legacy was the first road-going Subaru to feature an STI badge, but notably, it was in 1994 that the first Impreza WRX STI was introduced. The model launched in the United States in 2004. Available across sedan and hatchback bodystyles over 18 years, packing around 300 horsepower, the WRX STi was discontinued in 2021, owing to tightening global emissions norms with the EJ-engine series, leaving the door open for rivals. This latest reveal lands after years of anticipation and mixed signals. Subaru says that this model could go into production soon with deliveries as early as spring, but there is no confirmation on U.S. availability. Currently, the top-spec model is the WRX tS, which starts under $50k, is manual-only, and already features STi-tuned hardware. Subaru has leaned on STI branding through trim packages while rivals pushed horsepower and hardware forward. Demon Power Comes to the Gen-3 Rezvani Tank With 1,000 HP for 2026

Rezvani Motors has announced its latest Tank for 2026. This third-generation model is framed as the most resolved expression of the company’s core idea of a high-performance, go-anywhere tactical vehicle, building on nearly a decade of development. Founded in Irvine, California, by Ferris Rezvani in 2013, Rezvani Motors has always operated outside conventional segments with the brand first earning attention with lightweight, high-output sports cars before pivoting toward SUVs engineered around extreme capability. The original Tank, introduced in 2017, shocked the automotive world largely because it looked unlike anything else on the road. Its stealthy post-apocalyptic design language was aggressive, but it also introduced genuine off-road hardware and optional ballistic protection. The second generation added higher-performance engines, significantly upgraded interior quality, and also pushed the Tank into popular culture, appearing in films, music videos, and elite private collections. For 2026, the Tank rides on an all new sharpned exterior without losing its recognizable signature silhouette. The angular bodywork serves real purposes. A high beltline supports armored glass. Flat, slab-sided panels allow for integrated ballistic protection. The front structure accommodates reinforced ram bumpers and winches. What looks extreme is shaped around impact resistance, airflow management, and durability in hostile environments. You can configure it with three powertrains: a 3.6-liter V6 comes standard, but most attention will go to the optional 6.4-liter V8 rated at 500 horsepower, or the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 sourced from the Dodge Demon, delivering up to 1,000 horsepower. That top option pushes the Tank into supercar output territory while retaining Four Wheel Drive and serious ground clearance. In terms of hardware, two dedicated off-road packages add high clearance suspension, 3.0-inch FOX dampers, and terrain-ready tires. The Four Wheel Drive system lets you switch between on-road efficiency and full off-road traction, which is practical if this vehicle needs to serve daily duty and remote access work. Where the Tank separates itself from the field is with security. Rezvani offers an optional ballistic armor package that includes bullet-resistant glass, armored body panels, a Kevlar-protected fuel tank and battery, and underside blast protection. You can further add run-flat military tires, smoke screen deployment, EMP protection, thermal night vision from FLIR, and reinforced ram bumpers. These are integrated systems designed for occupants who prioritize personal security, disaster readiness, or high-risk travel. It is only inside the cabin that you are reminded this vehicle is built on a Jeep Wrangler platform. The upright seating position, switchgear layout, and proportions give it away. Even so, Rezvani reshapes the experience with more than ten available seat designs, leather interiors, a console-mounted safe, and integrated survival equipment. Electrified door handles, magnetic deadbolts, a PA and intercom system, and pepper spray dispensers, which allow occupants to manage threats without opening doors or windows. Pricing for the 2026 Rezvani Tank starts at $175,000 before options. The new Tank joins the Dark Knight and Vengeance SUVs, alongside the Retro RR1 and the aforementioned lightweight Beast, for a total of five models across Rezvani’s portfolio. The Supreme x Ducati Streetfighter V4 S is presented as part of the Spring/Summer 2024 Collection release, which features everything from an ICEE machine to a Roland TR-08 Rythm Composer. Along with a fresh paint job that shows off the Supreme logo on the gas tank, the Streetfighter V4 S also includes other hidden logos that commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Ducati Streetfighter V4 S is powered by a 1103cc Desmosedici Stradale engine, generating an impressive 208 horsepower and 90.4 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the motorcycle, Supreme and Ducati are also releasing a matching, limited-edition Corsair-X helmet in collaboration with Arai and Dainese Racing Jacket. In addition to the riding gear, which will be on sale exclusively through Supreme, the lifestyle collection consists of a Track Jacket, Hooded Work Jacket, Soccer Jersey, Track Pants, two T-shirts, and a 6-panel Hat.
