McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Manthey Racing Sets a New Benchmark With Back-to-Back Runs at the Nürburgring Nordschleife

When I met with Michael Grassl, Sales Director of Manthey Racing, at the Icons of Porsche Dubai last November, he teased an “exciting 2026”. The Manthey kit for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992.1), complete with its distinctive aero fin, had been unveiled over a year earlier in 2024, and I asked when the hot lap would follow. Five months on, that answer has arrived in the form of two Nürburgring laps set on the same day in mid- April. The headline belongs to the aforementioned 992.1 GT3 RS fitted with the Manthey Kit. Driven by long-serving Porsche works driver Jörg Bergmeister, the car recorded a 6:45.389 lap of the 20.832-kilometer (~13-mile) Nordschleife, improving on the already formidable standard car by roughly four seconds (6:49.328). Running alongside that effort on the same day was the latest iteration of the Porsche 911 GT3 (992.2) with the new Manthey performance kit. With Ayhancan Güven behind the wheel, the car posted a 6:50.863 lap, nearly five seconds quicker than the previous-generation 992.1 GT3 ( 6:55.200) equipped with Manthey hardware. The gains reflect a familiar Manthey formula, more downforce, sharper aero surfaces, and incremental refinements to suspension and braking. Grassl had outlined those updates in detail during our conversation. A larger front splitter, underbody fins, turning vanes, a closed floor, a revised diffuser, and a new rear wing define the package, which is supported by lightweight carbon components and optional track-focused upgrades. Inside, subtle changes signal the shift in identity, including Manthey branding replacing the GT3 badge behind the gear lever. Beyond lap times, the business case remains just as compelling. Manthey kits continue to command a premium in the secondary market, driven by proximity to record-setting cars and constrained supply. One of the most prominent and genre-defining MOBA games in the industry is League of Legends, and the intellectual property has risen far beyond just being a popular game. With a well-established e-sports presence, television shows, music, and more, League of Legends has risen into an unequivocal entertainment powerhouse. One of its spin-offs is a mobile game called League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Porsche has minted a new partnership with the game’s developer, Riot Games, centered around the mobile title. In-game, Porsche and Riot Games have co-created a cosmetic “skin” for the Wild Rift character Kai’Sa. With nods to Porsche and a motorsport-inspired design, the skin is part of Wild Rift’s “Neon Daredevil” update, which includes an alien planet where high-speed, futuristic vehicles compete. One of those combines design inspiration from League of Legends lore and the Porsche 911 GT3. Revealed: 2027 Porsche 911 GT3 S/C is Mega Manual, Open-Top Driver’s Car

In the pantheon of Germanic high-performance machines, few combinations are as evocative as a high-revving boxer engine paired with an open sky. Porsche has once again answered the call of the most ardent driving enthusiasts with the premiere of the 2027 911 GT3 S/C. Standing, of course, for ‘Sport Cabriolet,’ this fresh model variant is an emotional love letter to visceral, analog engagement, offering the world-class mechanics of the GT3 line in a pure two-seater, open-top format. The S/T Formula, Unplugged The 911 GT3 S/C is a sophisticated hybrid of Porsche’s most revered driver-focused attributes. It borrows the uncompromising lightweight components from the limited-production 911 S/T and marries them to the legendary 4.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine. To ensure the most connected experience possible, Porsche has designated the GT3 S/C as a manual-only affair. It is equipped exclusively with a short-ratio, lightweight six-speed GT Sport manual transmission. This singular focus on the three-pedal experience cements its status as a purist’s tool, reminiscent of the 2019 911 Speedster but without the production volume constraints. Consistent Lightweight Construction “We have managed to keep the weight of the 911 GT3 S/C particularly low at 3,322 lbs. despite the fully automatic top,” said Frank Moser, Vice President 911 and 718 model line. “The new 911 GT3 S/C responds to our customers' desire for sports cars that are particularly fun to drive. The exciting powertrain of the 911 GT3 comes into its own even more when driving without a roof, especially on winding country roads.” This featherweight figure is achieved through an extensive use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), which forms the hood, fenders, and doors – components directly inherited from the 911 S/T. The underbody panels and rear anti-roll bar follow suit in carbon fiber. To further reduce unsprung mass, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) come as standard equipment, shedding over 44 lbs. compared to iron rotors. The 20-inch front and 21-inch rear center-locking wheels are forged from magnesium, saving an additional 19 lbs. A Technical Masterpiece of Open-Air Engineering Unlike its manual-roof predecessors, the GT3 S/C introduces a fully automatic lightweight top. Utilizing magnesium panels, the roof maintains the iconic 911 silhouette with a coupe-like curvature, free of visible bows. The hydraulic mechanism can cycle the top in 12 seconds, while an integrated electric wind deflector deploys in two seconds to preserve cabin serenity at high speeds. Under the rear deck sits the heart of the beast: a 502 hp naturally aspirated engine capable of screaming to a 9,000 rpm redline. With sharper camshafts derived from the GT3 RS and flow-optimized throttle valves, the GT3 S/C surges to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 194 mph. Bespoke Craftsmanship: The Street Style Package For those seeking a more individualistic expression, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur offers the Street Style Package. This ‘Director’s Cut’ option features Pyro Red decorative graphics, Victory Gold brake calipers, and a dark gear lever with an open-pore walnut shift handle. The interior of the package is a showcase of precision, featuring four-color braided leather and an aesthetic that leans into modern color combinations. Owners can even complement their vehicle with a bespoke Porsche Design chronograph, featuring a winding rotor modeled after the car’s magnesium wheels. Chassis and Arrival Advanced suspension, combined with high-grip sport tires and the lightweight S/T chassis tuning, promises a level of agility rarely felt in a convertible. “The arrival of the 911 GT3 S/C marks the first time an open-top 911 uses a double wishbone front axle,” said Andreas Preuninger, Porsche’s Director GT Cars. “In combination with the particularly high-grip sports tires and the low weight, the car offers driving pleasure on winding roads that has hardly been experienced with an open-top car before.” The 2027 Porsche 911 GT3 S/C is available for order immediately, with a starting MSRP of $273,000. U.S. Porsche Centers expect the first arrivals by the fall of this year. A significant number of features with this model become standard equipment that are otherwise optional on the 911 GT3:- Lightweight package: $20,350- Magnesium Wheels: $17,840- Cabriolet (not optional, but value shown represents typical gap between coupe and cabriolet variants): $14,000- Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes: $10,370- Leather interior: $5,020Adding those price equivalents to the MSRP of the 911 GT3 would bring the MSRP above $306,000. Considering that, the MSRP of the 911 GT3 S/C at 273,000 represents a discount of roughly 11 percent vs. the standard GT3 as-equipped. Manthey Unveils New Kit For 992.2 Porsche 911 GT3

Manthey dials in the Porsche 911 GT3 yet again. Porsche’s lineup of cars with the hallowed “GT” moniker are some of the most serious Porsche performance machines to ever roll off the manufacturers’ assembly lines. Previously only reserved for track-focused, serious versions of the 911, the GT lineup has expanded to include the 718 Cayman, and the Cayenne and Taycan Turbo GT models. However, one racing specialist division of Porsche does even more to make Porsche’s GT models racing-ready performance powerhouses, and that is Manthey Racing, a creator of kits that give cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 even more circuit-focused performance prowess. Being an undeniable staple at track days, the Porsche 911 GT3 is the subject of a new Manthey Kit, which is not only another kit dedicated to enhancing the track performance of the GT3, but one that has specifically proven its ability to improve the lap time of the race-ready Porsche on the Nürburgring, not only compared to the standard 992.2 Porsche 911 GT3, but also compared to the previous Manthey Performance kit. The kit is available to be installed for Porsche 911 GT3s at Manthey-certified Porsche Centers throughout the country, and it doesn’t compromise any existing factory warranty on the vehicle. It significantly enhances the aerodynamic performance of the car, with components that efficiently increase downforce to as much as 1,190 pounds. In addition, an adjustable coilover suspension allows owners to change the rebound and compression without tools and enjoy greater spring rates, allowing even better track versatility than the car typically offers. LIghtweight wheels with 20 and 21 inches of diameter are available with the kit, along with braided steel brake lines. With the kit equipped, the car managed to improve its Nurburgring lap time by 2.76 seconds compared to the 992.1-generation 911 GT3 with the Manthey Performance Kit. Specifically, that time was 6:52.981, an absolutely blistering lap time for the 12.9-mile circuit with notoriously challenging bends and dramatic elevation changes. Porsche Reveals New Sonderwunsch 911 GT3 "Ocelot"

Porsche Sonderwunsch celebrates the natural beauty of the Amazon with a new GT3. Porsche’s Sonderwunsch is the pinnacle of customized, bespoke Porsche excellence, going even further than the stunning spectrum of color available from Porsche’s Paint to Sample program and offering the most discerning clients of the historic manufacturer the opportunity to create completely unique, one-off Porsche masterpieces. In addition to creating unique vehicles for the most particular customers, however, Sonderwunsch also embarks on projects that are commissioned to celebrate milestones or look back on history. The latest of those projects is Icons of Latin America, a project from Sonderwunsch that has debuted with the reveal of the new Porsche 911 GT3 “Ocelot.” With a design inspired by the stunning biodiversity and natural beauty of the Amazon Rainforest in Colombia, the bespoke Porsche 911 GT3 is named after one of the most intriguing animals that lives in the rainforest: the ocelot. Headquartered in Miami, Porsche Latin America is celebrating 25 years of its support of Porsche importers and the rich, passionate community of Porsche enthusiasts throughout Latin America, and the new Icons of Latin America Sonderwunsch project has been created to mark that milestone. Each car in the project, curated by Sonderwunsch experts, draws inspiration from the rich nature and culture that Latin America has to offer, and the 911 GT3 “Ocelot,” based on the 911 GT3 Touring, is the first. Its exterior color, appropriately, is a Paint to Sample Forest Green Metallic, with accents in Centenaire Silver. Inside, Cohiba Brown leather upholstery is paired with Pepita houndstooth fabric, completing a historically-inspired look that honors the rich legacy of some of the earliest Porsche 911s. Embossed ocelot silhouettes on the headrests commemorate the special edition, completing the special configuration for the bespoke Sonderwunsch masterpiece. Art meets performance. Breathing new life into a personalization program that dates back to the late 1970s, Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) aims to deliver true one-off Porsches with unlimited possibilities. The evolution of bespoke manufacturing has opened the doors to new opportunities outside Stuttgart, collaborating with artists to elevate the experience of creating a one-of-a-kind Porsche. Celebrating its 75th anniversary as one of the brand's first importers, Porsche Luxembourg commemorates the occasion by teaming up with Porsche Sonderwunsch on a special 911 GT3 Touring commission. The exclusive project hits home as the artist chosen to add in special artwork, Jacques Schneider, has roots in Luxembourg as a native self-taught artist with a background in painting, sculpting, photography, and textiles. Known as the Porsche Lëtzebuerg Legacy project, the bespoke build is both a tribute and a rolling piece of art. From the subtle yet vivid Fire Red lion graphics handpainted on its factory Ice Grey Metallic finish to the headliner embroidered with Luxembourg's outline and lyrics from the national anthem, every inch of this 911 GT3 Touring has been carefully crafted with meaning. The GT3's "Vive" motif shows up on the underbody, the wheels, and the seats, helping tie the whole tribute together. Artist Jacques played a major role in the creative process, leaving his literal signature across the car, from door sills to console stitching. Underneath all the custom art still lies a factory 911 GT3 with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six pushing out 510 horsepower, ready to scream up to 9,000 rpm with no rear wing in sight thanks to the Touring Package. Inside, the craftsmanship continues with printed leather panels, aluminum-backed sport seat inserts with "Vive" in white, and a red-finished accelerator pedal that matches the exterior. The Racetex headliner might be the most sentimental detail of all, with handwritten lyrics from Luxembourg's national anthem stitched in using a specially programmed embroidery machine. All design elements required hundreds of hours of new techniques, from multi-layer roller printing to laser-finished wheels, proving that the Sonderwunsch program is still pushing boundaries.
