McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Cars North America Credits Macan For H1 2025 Growth

The first half of 2025 was the best one yet for PCNA. Porsche’s already celebrated lineup of luxury performance vehicles is rapidly evolving, with a new all-electric version of its Macan SUV, the first roadgoing hybrid Porsche 911, and new generations of its perennial staple vehicles recently unveiled. However, the first half of 2025 has proved to be one of the most successful periods for Porsche Cars North America yet, with 38,696 sales at the end of the second quarter exceeding 2024’s H1 number of 34,733. Porsche credits its robust sales success, which in fact resulted in PCNA’s best half-year ever, with the success of the new Porsche Macan. Already one of Porsche’s most popular models, the Macan spent past years trading places with the Porsche Cayenne, Porsche’s original smash hit luxury SUV, as the highest seller in Porsche’s portfolio. However, the introduction of the new Porsche Macan Electric saw the Macan’s sales rise to 14,563 in H1 2025 for PCNA, compared to the Cayenne’s 10,327. Compared to 2024’s sales number for the Macan in the first half of the year, the H1 2025 number of Porsche Macan sales represents a significant increase of 21.32 percent, signaling the success of the electric rendition of the popular luxury performance SUV. In addition, nearly a thousand more examples of the Porsche Panamera sold in the first half of this year than in the same period last year. Sales of 911 and 718 models increased during the half, as did sales of Certified Pre-Owned Porsches. The latest Cayenne is already breaking records and it hasn't even began production. Launching the luxury SUV segment with three generations dating back to 2003, the Porsche Cayenne has and will continue to cement itself as a staple for the brand. The Cayenne's addition to Porsche's sport-focused fleet of 911s and Boxters offered more space and the ability to travel off-road, expanding its customer base worldwide. With over a million Cayenne sold since its introduction more than 20 years ago, Porsche is now evolving the SUV as it's testing the capabilities of the first-ever all-electric Cayenne at the historic Shelsley Walsh hill climb event in Worcestershire. It made a serious statement by setting a new SUV record, driven by Porsche Formula E development driver Gabriela Jílková. The all-electric Cayenne ran the historic .56-mile climb in just 31.28 seconds, beating the previous SUV record by more than four seconds. And while the sprint is impressive, it passed the 180-foot mark in just 1.94 seconds, a time typically achieved by single-seater race cars on slicks. This latest version of the Cayenne joins the lineup as Porsche's second all-electric SUV, following in the footsteps of the Taycan, welcomed alongside the gas and hybrid variants of the Cayenne. While Porsche hasn't released full specs yet, the record run was done using production-level power figures, showing just how dialed-in the SUV already is ahead of its full debut. Porsche also highlighted how usable the Cayenne Electric will be in everyday life. British TV host Richard Hammond used the prototype to tow a car and trailer weighing nearly 6,600 pounds, and according to him, the SUV didn't break a sweat. Porsche confirmed that Cayenne Electric will support a towing capacity of up to 7,716 pounds, which matches the capability of its gas-powered counterpart. Hot on the heels of the recently announced 992.2 Carrera 4S family, in order to commemorate the 70th anniversary of what is not just one of the biggest Porsche Clubs, but one of the largest single-marque car clubs in the world, Porsche has just announced a new limited-edition model. This is the 2026 Porsche 911 Carrera T Club Coupe. Unveiled at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, Georgia, this highly collectible model, built upon one of the purest 911s on sale today, blends driving performance with curated design touches and honors the club’s founding in 1955 by Bill Sholar, which has grown to now have over 150,000+ members. The exterior is a celebration of PCA heritage, finished in a brand-new PTS metallic shade dubbed Sholarblau, in a nod to the venerable PCA founder. It also continues the PCA tradition of coming up with special colors for anniversary editions, more specifically, Clubblau was developed for the 60th anniversary in 2015 on the 991 GTS Club Coupe. That shade paid homage to the original Azzuro California Blue, on the first PCA edition 911 back in 2005, the 997 Carrera S. This newest color is the result of a multi-year collaborative effort between Style Porsche, Exclusiv Manufaktur, and PCA. Other highlights on the bodywork include Guards red accents on the front bumper as part of the SportDesign front facia and the 20/21-inch RS Spyder wheels finished in a bespoke Satin Black with Brilliant Silver details, which completely transform their look. Outback, you get Guards Red Grill slats and a '70-year PCA’ badge on the engine cover. A subtle Club Coupe decal on the door and the body-colored Sholarblau mirrors instead of the Carrera T’s Vanadium gray finish tie it all together and lend a hint that you’re looking at something special. Inside, the attention to detail continues with illuminated door sills that read ‘Porsche Club Of America’ in a bespoke font, while PCA 70-year logos are projected onto the ground. The cabin is trimmed in a combination of black leather, accented with Speedblue stitching and Guards Red, with additional details including a special Club Coupe logo on the dash and an embossed logo on the center leather armrest. Another highlight in the interior worth mentioning is the Walnut gear knob, which in itself is a nod to racing Porsches of old, like the iconic 917 and subsequently the race-bred Carrera GT. An optional extended equipment package takes things even further with tartan inserts in a unique PCA pattern on the seats and in the glovebox, besides Guards Red seat belt loops, a leather owners manual cover with embossed logos, and a Sholarblue-painted key, also stored in a matching color pouch. In a special touch, each buyer will also be eligible to purchase a bespoke Chronograph 1 - 911 Club Coupe watch, by Porsche Design and handcrafted in Switzerland. Powered by the COSC-certified WERK 01.140 movement, it features a matte black dial, PCA banding, and a rotor that mimics this car’s unique RS Spyder Wheel design. Coming to performance, at the heart of the Club Coupe is the same 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six that produces 388 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque, paired to a six-speed manual gearbox (only available transmission on Carrera T) and rear wheel drive. It shares much of its mechanical underpinnings with the 992.2 Carrera T, and the Club Coupe continues to get the full enthusiast treatment, with the mechanical limited-slip differential, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), and lowered PASM Sport Suspension, which lowers the ride height by 0.39 inches (10 mm) over the standard Carrera. Only 70 units will be built for the U.S. and Canada. The first example, not part of the limited-run production, will go to the Porsche Museum, while the second example will be raffled off to PCA members. The rest will be offered exclusively to Club members. Production begins this autumn and will run through spring 2026, and while pricing hasn’t been announced yet, as this is a highly collectible model, expect it to carry a considerable premium over the standard 992.2 Carrera T’s $138,700. Luftgekhühlt finally arrives to the East Coast. It’s no secret in the automotive world that the Porsche 911 is one of the world’s favorite sports cars. Since its introduction in 1963, the Porsche 911 has amassed legions of fans who love its shape, its unmatched driving experience, its wide range of variants, and its cherished legacy. However, there’s a particular and passionate love among Porsche enthusiasts for the air-cooled generations of the Porsche 911 and Porsche’s other air-cooled models, a lineage that lasted from the beginning of the 911, until the end of the 993 generation in 1998. The particular obsession with air-cooled Porsches spurred an iconic event called Luftgekühlt, which brings air-cooled Porsches and crowds of their fans to unique venues to celebrate the variety, history, exclusivity, and stories of the various cars on display. Thanks to its criteria, the cars at Luftgekühlt are inherently classics, and the presence of purist-focused classics has made for a series of amazingly culture-rich automotive events over the past decade. The eleventh iteration of Luftgekühlt is marking a first, coming to Durham, North Carolina for the event’s first East Coast appearance. The venue was originally supposed to host Luft 7 in 2020, but those plans were postponed due to COVID, and now the historic North Carolina city is finally getting its chance to host a Luftgekühlt event. Known for its historic district, Durham was home to the American Tobacco Company from 1874 to the ‘50s, and the historic factory buildings even have connections to Porsche race cars, like the 917K that competed in 1970’s 9-hour race in Kyalami. After being a tobacco capital and one of the country’s busiest industrial centers, Durham had to reinvent itself after the tobacco industry faded, giving birth to the iconic historic district where the industry once thrived, which will serve as home to the 11th Luftgekühlt event. Finally arriving at an East Coast venue, automotive enthusiast scenes across the Eastern seaboard have easier access to the magic of Luftgekühlt. Ticket sales and car registration are set to open soon, and in the meantime, anticipation is building for the iconic Luftgekühlt to finally arrive to the East Coast. Porsche Unveils Three New 911 Variants

The new generation of the Porsche 911 continues to grow. Arguably the world’s favorite sports car, the Porsche 911 has spent over 60 years as one of the greatest legends in the performance car world, with an unmistakable silhouette, legendary driving character, and a rich legacy with fans across the globe. However, the latest generation of the Porsche 911, the 992.2, has introduced unprecedented innovations like unveiling the first road-going hybrid Porsche 911 variant, the Carrera GTS. As the new generation of the Porsche 911 grows, the 2026 model year sees three more variants added to the group: the new 2026 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Coupe, the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, and the 911 Carrera Targa 4S. The addition of the three new variants brings the total number of current all-wheel drive 911 variants to six. The new 4S models help bridge the gap between the standard Porsche 911 Carrera and the powerful GTS variants, while adding all-wheel drive in comparison to the Carrera S models. According to Porsche, United States customers who purchase a 911 “S” variant choose all-wheel drive almost half the time. Thanks to the torque split favoring the rear wheels, the 911 Carrera 4S combines fun-to-drive spirit with the practicality of all-wheel drive. Their twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six engine produces a significant 473 horsepower and 390 lb/ft of torque, with its increase in power coming thanks to intercooling improvements coming from the 911 Turbo. With that power, the 911 Carrera S Coupe rockets from 0-60 in just 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 191 mph. In addition to its power and performance, the new 911 4S models receive the upgraded standard equipment that comes with the S variants. The Porsche 911 Targa 4S’s introduction to the new generation for the 2026 model year marks the 60th anniversary of the model, since the first generation was introduced at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1965. While maintaining the original design characteristics of the roof that was manually removable and combined the appeal of both a coupe and a convertible, the latest generation features a charming look and a roof that is fully automatic, combining the Targa’s vintage appeal with modern convenience, luxury, and technology. Art meets performance. Breathing new life into a personalization program that dates back to the late 1970s, Sonderwunsch (Special Wishes) aims to deliver true one-off Porsches with unlimited possibilities. The evolution of bespoke manufacturing has opened the doors to new opportunities outside Stuttgart, collaborating with artists to elevate the experience of creating a one-of-a-kind Porsche. Celebrating its 75th anniversary as one of the brand's first importers, Porsche Luxembourg commemorates the occasion by teaming up with Porsche Sonderwunsch on a special 911 GT3 Touring commission. The exclusive project hits home as the artist chosen to add in special artwork, Jacques Schneider, has roots in Luxembourg as a native self-taught artist with a background in painting, sculpting, photography, and textiles. Known as the Porsche Lëtzebuerg Legacy project, the bespoke build is both a tribute and a rolling piece of art. From the subtle yet vivid Fire Red lion graphics handpainted on its factory Ice Grey Metallic finish to the headliner embroidered with Luxembourg's outline and lyrics from the national anthem, every inch of this 911 GT3 Touring has been carefully crafted with meaning. The GT3's "Vive" motif shows up on the underbody, the wheels, and the seats, helping tie the whole tribute together. Artist Jacques played a major role in the creative process, leaving his literal signature across the car, from door sills to console stitching. Underneath all the custom art still lies a factory 911 GT3 with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six pushing out 510 horsepower, ready to scream up to 9,000 rpm with no rear wing in sight thanks to the Touring Package. Inside, the craftsmanship continues with printed leather panels, aluminum-backed sport seat inserts with "Vive" in white, and a red-finished accelerator pedal that matches the exterior. The Racetex headliner might be the most sentimental detail of all, with handwritten lyrics from Luxembourg's national anthem stitched in using a specially programmed embroidery machine. All design elements required hundreds of hours of new techniques, from multi-layer roller printing to laser-finished wheels, proving that the Sonderwunsch program is still pushing boundaries. Porsche continues to dominate Road Atlanta. Recently, Porsche took a field trip from its North American headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia to beat the previous production electric vehicle lap time record on the iconic course with its new pinnacle performance-orietned electric vehicle: the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. Equipped with the racing-focused Weissach Package available for the car, the Taycan Turbo GT was able to shatter the previous record set by the previous generation’s Porsche Taycan Turbo S by roughly seven seconds, a significant improvement. However, Porsche refused to stop there. Two other Porsche models, the electrified Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, and the most performance-focused version of Porsche’s SUV icon: the Cayenne Turbo GT, took to Road Atlanta to set lap time record of their own. In the case of the Cayenne Turbo GT, its lap time of 1:34.38 set a new record for Performance SUVs at Road Atlanta, while the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid set a lap time that bested the previous Panamera Turbo S at 1:30.98. Together with the Taycan Turbo GT’s record on the track, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and the Cayenne Turbo GT’s dominance of Road Atlanta demonstrates the incredible variety of Porsche’s performance engineering capabilities, boasting the ability to create not only an incredibly powerful electric racing-focused vehicle, but also a luxury SUV that can prove itself on the track, and a luxury sedan that uses an electrified powertrain to deliver formidable performance. 1-of-1 Porsche 911 GT2 RS With Over $92K In Special Wishe...

Unlike any other Porsche GT2 RS you've seen before. In line just behind the 918 Spyder and 911 Turbo S (992), the 911 GT2 RS (991) is recognized as one of Porsche's fastest production cars. Following the lineage of the legendary GT2 and its track-proven recipe of adding forced induction to a portion of Porsche's GT stable, the 991-generation GT2 RS has since aged like a fine wine and continues to skyrocket in popularity among passionate Porsche purists and enthusiasts. And while current market conditions reflect an uprise in demand for these cars, finding a true one-of-a-kind spec proves to be a challenge on its own. The Origin Story Of One Of Porsche's Rarest Colors

An obsession with one hue spurred a stunning collection. Porsche is of course known for its rich legacy of luxury performance vehicles, but among enthusiasts especially, Porsche is celebrated for its expansive library of colors throughout the years. Thanks to its Paint to Sample program, not only are Porsche clients afforded the opportunity to specify a certain shade for their dream Porsche from the manufacturer’s vast archive of colors, but they are also able to create new colors of their own for extra-special projects. However, one Porsche collection, owned by Justin Roeser, is dedicated to one historic Porsche color, which happens to be one of the rarest Porsche paint colors of all time: Moonstone. For years, Roeser has been acquiring cars painted in the elusive shade of lilac, and its origins are shrouded in mystery. Only 223 cars were painted in Moonstone between 1979 and 1980, and those were 924, 928, and 911 models. Appearing pink, white, or purple depending on the lighting, Roeser owns three Moonstone cars, a 924, a 911 SC Targa, and one of just nine 928 examples ever made in Moonstone. His first was the 924, the model that made up the majority of Moonstone cars. Then came the 911, which, being a 1977 model, was adorned with the color as a result of a special request. However, his rarest is the 928, which he was offered years before, but refused initially, only to eventually find it again. After acquiring his 928 in Germany, Roeser decided to discover the origins of the color, embarking on a journey that took him to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen to meet Vlasta Hatter, a member of the team that originally designed the color in the 1970s. The color, which has the name Flieder, or lilac in German, is inspired by the lilac plant, and the color was developed using inspiration boards that Hatter put together with wood, metal, faux leather, and clippings from fashion magazines. The reason the color has a mysteriously dynamic appearance without being a metallic paint is that it uses pigments that are no longer allowed to be used today. The color was quite unpopular when it first appeared as part of Porsche’s lineup, but today, it serves as inspiration for the color “Moongem” in Porsche’s Paint to Sample palette, as well as Provence, featured on the new Macan Electric. Despite being unsuccessful and also being one of Porsche’s most uncommon colors, Moonstone’s incredible legacy gives significance to part of Porsche’s massive spectrum of colors.
