McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Unveils New 2026 Macan Electric GTS

Porsche’s new all-electric SUV gets a new performance trim level. Standing for “Gran Turismo Sport,” the GTS suffix has been an important one in Porsche’s history for over 60 years, since the 904 Carrera GTS was first introduced in 1963. Now, the three letters have been used to signify Porsche models with compelling performance and a sporty edge. Models like the 911, Macan, Cayenne, 718, and Taycan have all featured GTS variants, and now, the Porsche Macan Electric is joining the group, as a new GTS variant of Porsche’s all-electric SUV joins the lineup as the fifth model in the range for the 2026 model year. It boasts up to 563 horsepower of Overboost power, and distinguishes itself further with a limited slip rear differential, and an air suspension with decidedly sporty tuning. Made with optimal cornering precision and agility in mind, the new 2026 Porsche Macan Electric GTS also is set apart visually by the traditional GTS treatment: black accents throughout, along with sporty styling treatments. The new Macan Electric GTS will get from 0-60 in just 3.6 seconds, completing a quarter-mile in 12 seconds flat and reaching a limited top speed of 155 mph. It shares a rear electric motor with the range-topping Macan Electric Turbo, allowing the electric SUV to wield 509 horsepower regularly, with up to 563 horsepower in Overboost. The Sport Chrono package comes as standard for the new Macan Electric GTS, with the Track Endurance Mode that was introduced on the Taycan, optimizing the battery for extended performance driving. The suspension is specifically tuned for the GTS, with a low center of gravity, and the standard Porsche Torque Vectoring System mounted behind the rear motor to contribute to a slightly rear-biased weight distribution (48/52). Optional rear-axle steering also contributes to incredible handling. Three new colors will be available for the GTS: Chalk, Carmine Red, and Lugano Blue. The standard interior features Race-Tex and black leather upholstery throughout, with available contrast stitching and accents made to match some of the available exterior colors. Starting at $103,000, the new 2026 Porsche Macan Electric GTS is available to order now, and the first examples of the new high-performance electric SUV are set to arrive at Porsche centers in the US starting in the spring of 2026. The 2025 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge has officially reached its finale. Each year, Porsche Cars North America calls on its retail network to find a Porsche in need of TLC and either restore its former glory or give it a unique twist that breathes new life into a previously unloved classic, and those cars compete in the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge. This year, the Porsche Classic Restoration challenge saw a total of 73 vehicles, a new record number, entered in the competition, and regional winners were announced at high-profile events like Monterey Car Week, Luftgekühlt 11, and more. Now, the final crop of winners for the 2025 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge have been revealed, with the national champions in each category crowned. Each category, Preservation, Restoration, Individualization, and the People’s Choice Award, highlight a different aspect of what makes the Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge special. Porsche Bend won the Grand National and Individualization Championship with its 1973 Porsche 911T, RSR Tribute, which is finished in Viper Green, with custom finishes to evoke an “RSR” look, and houndstooth upholstery throughout the interior for an added touch of classic Porsche flair. Meanwhile, the 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 submitted by Porsche North Houston won the Restoration National Championship, with a Speed Yellow exterior finish, a legendary 3.6-liter Mezger flat-six engine, and a painstaking restoration job that lovingly brought it back to life. The Preservation National Champion in the 2025 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge was the 1988 944 Turbo S submitted by Gaudin Porsche of Las Vegas. Maintaining as much originality as possible, the car and its exciting story made it a clear winner for the preservation category. A 964 911 Carrera RS from Harper Porsche won the People’s Choice Award. It sought to capture the spirit of today’s revived Sonderwunsch program that allows Porsche clients to realize their wildest customization dreams. In that spirit, the exterior features a color that nods at iconic Porsche greens with a color-shifting aspect inspired by Porsche’s ultra-exclusive Chromaflair paints. A custom interior, combined with weight-saving carbon fiber and a robust engine, means that the car, while boasting stunning custom looks, also matches the power-to-weight ratio of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. Porsche reasserts its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship dominance. Last year, Porsche’s 963 racing hypercar and the 911 GT3 R were superstars in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Some of the world’s most iconic and challenging race tracks, including Daytona, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Road America, and Indianapolis, saw Porsche come out on top in both the top-class GTP category and the GTD Pro class of the championship. AO Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 R won the GTD Pro championship, snagging the Teams’, Drivers’, and Manufacturers’ titles with its cartoonish and now incredibly popular “Rexy” livery. Meanwhile, the Porsche 963 hypercar did the same in the GTP Category, with both Porsche Penske Motorsport cars finishing first and second in the Drivers’ Championship, the Manufacturers’ Championship, and the Teams’ Championship. That dominance meant that in this year’s IMSA calendar of races, Porsche was the team to beat, and the pressure was on for Porsche to defend its many titles. Road Atlanta’s legendary Petit Le Mans race took place this past weekend as the SportsCar Championship’s season finale. With the championship titles all coming to a head at the 10-hour race, Porsche’s hypercar factory team managed to continue its winning streak for the 2025 season, coming away from Petit Le Mans with all of its championship titles defended. Cadillac Whelen finished first at Petit Le Mans, with driver Earl Bamber crossing the line in the Cadillac V-Series.R. However, the Porsche Penske Motorsport factory team’s Porsche 963 hypercars’ third and tenth-place finishes secured the team the manufacturer and team titles, and Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet claimed the driver titles. In the championship’s Michelin Endurance Cup, Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy claimed the drivers’ championship win. In a Halloween-themed skeletal livery, the AO Racing “Rexy” 911 GT3 R fought hard but came short of this year’s GTD Pro class wins. Other Porsche customer teams with both 963 hypercars and the 911 GT3 R added Porsche representation to the grid throughout the season. With solid finishes at Petit Le Mans, however, the factory hypercars continued a streak of IMSA dominance that will be tested again at the start of next year, with the Rolex 24 at Daytona taking place at the legendary Daytona International Speedway from January 21 to 25, 2026. Singer touches down in Japan for the first time. News travels fast in the automotive world, and eyebrows start to raise when people start talking about reimagining classic Porsche 911s through bespoke builds. It's the story of Rob Dickinson and his 1969 Porsche 911, which became the gateway into Singer Vehicle Design and the eruption of custom-built, air-cooled 911s. The car shown at Cornes Day featured stitched and burnished leather seams requiring 400 hours of hand-finished work and velvet corduroy accents in Mars Pink, a vibrant contrast to the Celeste Passalacqua exterior. Factory Porsche Hypercar Team To Quit FIA World Endurance...

Porsche AG has revealed that its factory-backed Porsche Penske Motorsport squad will end its involvement in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at the end of the current season, citing a “comprehensive realignment” of its racing programs. Porsche won last year’s WEC Drivers’ Championship, but failed to add to its record 19 overall victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans since it returned to the top class with the 963 LMDh car in 2023. Porsche will continue with its 963 Hypercar in the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, as well as running its 99X Electric in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. But declining EV sales, falling demand in China, and the impact of US tariffs, which have all impacted revenues, are understood to have contributed to this change of strategy. Explaining its decision, Dr Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Development at Porsche AG, said: “We very much regret that, due to the current circumstances, we will not be continuing our involvement in the WEC after this season.” Porsche won a recent WEC round, at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas, and remains in contention to retain its Drivers’ Championship crown in the Bahrain finale. The decision to pull out of the global series will considerably decrease its chances of further top-class success at Le Mans, although customer team Proton Competition could continue to race its 963 in the WEC. Should PPM’s works team claim the 2025 IMSA GTP title later this month at Petit Le Mans, it would gain an automatic entry to Le Mans in 2026. “We use motorsport as a development platform for future technology and to illustrate the potential of our sports cars,” says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “With the Porsche 963 in the North American IMSA series and the Porsche 99X Electric in the Formula E World Championship, we want to continue to fight for overall victories in the future. That is our tradition and our focus.” The exit of Porsche is a blow to the WEC, but this is softened by factory teams from Genesis, McLaren and Ford poised to join its ranks in the coming years. A weekend to remember. While some automotive marques pride themselves on building a community and cult following of owners and enthusiasts, none will ever achieve the status of Porsche and its passionate purists. Even after being debuted to the public on September 12th, 1963, the Porsche 911 continues to shape itself as one of the most beloved cars ever created among people of all ages. Today, Porsche continues to recognize and celebrate early air-cooled 911 culture through events like Luftgekühlt, which began as a passion project for former Porsche factory driver Patrick Long, creative director Howie Idelson, and motorsport legend Jeff Zwart. A crucial part of Porsche's longstanding connection to air-cooled 911s, Luftgekühlt, just recently celebrated its eleventh event in North Carolina this past weekend. Set against the industrial backdrop of the historic American Tobacco Campus in Durham, North Carolina, this year's event welcomed more than 9,000 attendees and roughly 200 cars. Curated with the kind of obsessive detail that's become synonymous with the show, the weekend captured the essence of Porsche's golden air-cooled era. For Long, Luftgekühlt remains as much about the people as the cars, connecting generations of enthusiasts through Stuttgart's best. Since its modest beginnings in Southern California, Luftgekühlt has evolved into a global sensation. Special guests Bobby Rahal and Tommy Kendall brought racing history to this year's show, with Kendall's 993 GT2 Le Mans car and Rahal's stunning 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS on display. The stories behind these cars, meticulously restored and preserved by icons like Gunnar Racing, represent what makes Luft so special: a living, breathing archive of Porsche's motorsport history, told through the cars themselves and the people who love them. This year's central theme was the 30th anniversary of the 993-generation Porsche 911's arrival in North America. As the final air-cooled model produced, the 993 remains one of the most celebrated chapters in Porsche's history. Luftgekühlt 11 showcased a range of 993-era road and race cars, including the Emmanuel Collard-driven 911 Supercup racer and rare examples from AJR Restorations. The show's East Coast debut also brought out icons from Brumos Racing and Holbert Racing, creating a timeline of Porsche motorsport success that stretched from Daytona to Le Mans. Walk into any Concours event today, and sometimes even your local Cars & Coffee, chances are, that you’re never too far away from a restomodded 911. While several makes and models continue to make waves in the thriving restomod scene, Porsche’s iconic sports car, across several generations, has become one of the most popular platforms for modern reinterpretations for decades. Now, a new Dutch startup, Aerfal Automotive, is taking a shot at reviving a model that you’ve most likely only seen at auction, the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS. A follow-up to the immensely successful 718 RSK, Porsche’s earlier mid-engine racer that dominated endurance sports car racing in the 1950s with back-to-back wins at Targa Florio in 1959 and 1960, besides class victories at Le Mans and Sebring, the 904 carried that same momentum, taking the overall win at the 1964 Targa Florio, GT2.0 class wins at Le Mans in 1964 and 1965, and strong results at the Monte Carlo Rally and Sebring. Most cars featured a 2.0-liter Carrera 4-cam flat-four making about 180 horsepower, with a handful of examples later fitted with six- and even flat-eight engines with 240 horsepower and top speed in excess of 160 mph. Thanks to a fiberglass body bonded to a ladder frame, the 904 weighed just under 1,450 pounds, giving it a serious advantage over heavier rivals at the time. Just 120 examples were built between 1963 and 1965 to meet FIA homologation regulations, and it became one of Porsche’s most versatile race cars. The 904 would eventually pave the way for the 906, 910, and 917, which are some of Porsche's top motorsport models. Now that you have some context about the 904’s rarity and racing pedigree, it should come as no surprise that original examples are now trading hands for well over seven figures. That high cost is exactly why Aerfal founder Daniel Robledo has chosen the 914 as a donor platform for the AE94. These digital design renderings, done by Alan Derosier in a stunning shade of classic silver, give us a first impression of what the production car could look like. Some of the many modern visual touches that you can see include carbon fiber finishes inside the headlight housing, comprising of LED units. You'll also find LED taillights. Inside, expect vegetable-tanned leather-trimmed bucket seats, titanium hardware, and a Momo steering wheel. Even the dials are being designed with a luxury watchmaker, with each car set to include a matching chronograph. Aerfal’s approach also highlights a shift in the restomod scene. Builders are beginning to move beyond the 911. Nardone Automotive has reimagined the 928 with a carbon-bodied reinterpretation pushing around 400 horsepower. Fifteen Eleven Design has turned the once-overlooked 914 into a $440,000 Cayman-powered sports car. Kalmar has tried to capture the essence of the 959 with their 9x9. While 904 replicas and kit cars have existed for decades, and Porsche itself did a modern-day tribute when it debuted the 904 Living Legend concept in 2013, Aerfal is taking the idea further, combining modern engineering with OEM-level execution, while maintaining the design and ethos of the original 904. If production begins as planned, the Aerfal AE94 could stand out as one of the most unique and highly anticipated Porsche restomods in years. This Sonderwunsch masterpiece is inspired by a racing icon. AO Racing won the IMSA GTD Pro championship title in 2024 with a Porsche 911 GT3 R, however, it wasn’t just any Porsche 911 GT3 R. Nicknamed “Rexy,” the car quickly captured attention with its dinosaur-inspired livery, complete with a bright green color and a mouth full of sharp teeth at the front. With the car’s success and already iconic reputation for AO Racing, the team principal, Gunnar Jeannette, decided to commission a Porsche 911 GT3 RS through Porsche’s ultra-exclusive Sonderwunsch bespoke program inspired by Rexy. The exterior of the bespoke GT3 RS is Viper Green, a nod to Rexy’s striking bright green color, and the interior features various nods to AO Racing and the undeniable success of Rexy in its racing pursuits. A trim panel on the dashboard features AO Racing’s logo, as well as track outlines of Laguna Seca, the Detroit street circuit, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, all tracks where Rexy emerged victorious in 2024. The door sill features an IMSA logo with “GTD Pro Champion 2024” as a reminder of the victory, with the red in the IMSA logo being illuminated. One of the most painstaking but worthwhile details is an embossed Rexy logo in the headrest of the seats. The completed car made its first public appearance at Road America, just in time for the 2025 IMSA race that was recently held at the track, where it was showcased alongside Rexy in action on the circuit.
