2017 Veloster Turbo

A "Hot Hatch" is only pertinent if the price is right. Hyundai decided to enter the hatchback market in 2012 with the Veloster. A fast name and a sleek design made it an instant hit. Although it only has 3 doors, it is perfect for college kids. At least that was the initial target audience. But much like Toyota found out with the Scion brand, baby-boomers flocked to the "neat design". Our parents have been given boring boxes since the '70s, so something this wild grabs their attention. Once they realize it is under $22,000, the deal is sealed. Many brands have moved upmarket to the point that an Escalade and a Maserati can have the same payments. Not at Hyundai. They offer a fun & safe six-speed car with a great warranty for a nice value. Is it fast? No, cars in this category are aimed at mileage, and the manual is rated a 33 mpg on the highway (25 mpg city). It is front-wheel drive, but the multi-link suspension is spot-on Inside, the controls are symmetrical and pleasing. The 201 horsepower 1.6L engine only has 195 lb-ft of torque, so you better like shifting. Two large cup holders south of the shifter are hard to use while driving. But the visibility and pedal placement are perfect. Wind noise and road noise are worse than a Corvair, so get a case of undercoating and spend the weekend filling in the seams. It takes quick shifting to reach 60 mph in under 8-seconds so your driving habits will need adjustment if you are coming from a powerful car. Even though the shifter is cable-operated, it inspires confidence and reliability. The clutch is easy, but a hydraulic restrictor keeps you from a side-step launch. After a week of cruising and carving the corners, there is only one thing we disagree on. I would put winter tires on the back for more rotation in the corners, and swap the sway bar bushings for polyurethane. 2018 Elantra GT

By Dylan Orluck –  June 04, 2018

2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Review

The new Hyundai Elantra GT is a sporty new hatchback that comes with four doors and your choice of a manual or automatic transmission. The example we tested came with an automatic transmission that was paired with a 2.0 liter, 161 horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. At first, those numbers startled me, but after jumping behind the wheel and feeling how light and nimble the new Elantra GT is, that nervousness turned into a smile. Although it isn’t the sportiest car in the world, when you put the car in sport mode the shifts and throttle response feel more crisp, which offer a more visceral driving experience. Not only that but the car had all the interior features you need in your day to day drives. It is comfortable and has a ton of room in the trunk for such a small car. The test car had a sticker price of $27,460 and featured options like blind spot detection, ventilated leather seats, LED headlights and taillights, Apple CarPlay and a sunroof. I don’t know about you but I don't need much more than that when it comes to driving on a daily basis. Overall, the car has a sleek-looking front-end with a large cargo space and a comfortable yet well-optioned interior. It checks all of the boxes for the average driver looking for an average 27MPG and a nice ride. Hyundai continues to impress me.

2018 Genesis G80

Hyundai doesn't want you to know they build big luxury sedans-- that's why their top two offerings were rebranded. The Hyundai Genesis has evolved into the Genesis G80, and the Equus is now the Genesis G90. Being a tremendous bargain in the sedan marketplace, you've probably seen them at work and on the street.Attention to details and great build quality have made the Genesis a smashing success, but perhaps Hyundai wants us to perceive them as the small & affordable alternative to Japanese or European imports. So the current strategy seems to leave Kia as the introduction, Hyundai for the mainstream, and Genesis for the elite. Sharing parts and engineering across the brands has allowed for innovation in every area. That is how they shocked the world with the 2012 Genesis R-Spec. It had a 429 horsepower V8 that was a plausible CTS-V fighter. And now they've done it again. The 2018 Genesis G80 Sedan is available with the same 5.0 liter V8 we've come to love, but this is something new. Under the hood is a 3.3 liter V6 with twin turbos. Everyone else is adding boost to small V6 engines, so it was bound to happen. The motor is the only real difference since our review of the 2017 Genesis G80, so click that link for the full rundown. On premium fuel it makes 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. Ken Lingenfelter Buys LaFerrariThe transmission is the same 8 speed automatic as last year. Shifting is on the comfort side so it would be nicer to have more bang on WOT downshifts. Brake boosting is a great way to launch, and it will catch the unsuspecting with tire smoke and strange looks. Although it only makes a few less pound-feet than the V8 Genesis, it is nice to have better highway mileage. To differentiate it from the V8 models, the Sport has satin nickel accents along with unique grilles & wheels. Apple CarPlay and Android are fully supported with the Lexicon 17 speaker system. Other pleasantries include a wireless charging pad, carbon fiber interior trim, and a full-color HUD screen. What are they asking for a new motor and upgraded details? Only $56,225. Much cheaper than any other twin turbo sedan, but almost $1,000 more than the V8 from last year. It is still a good buy if you are looking for a solid & quiet ride, especially one backed by a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty.
