Mecum Auctions is bringing an incredibly rare collection of Ferrari prototypes to their Monterey 2022 event. This includes three LaFerrari prototypes and an F12tdf prototype. Each of these vehicles was essential for the development of their models, giving them a special spot in Ferrari’s lineage. 2014 Ferrari F12tdf Prototype MP4
This prototype, designated MP4, represents one of the finest milestones of the project and stands as a unique, evolutionary example of Ferrari’s model development process, offering an insight into the incredible engineering efforts that take a new Ferrari from concept to reality. Offered with just 31,728 kilometers, MP4 features a standard F12 hood and a Matte Black paint finish with white vinyl racing roundels. The matching black interior includes leather seats, plus carbon fiber accents on the dash and door panels. Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes provide stopping power, and road contact is delivered by Pirelli P-Zero tires on gorgeous 10-spoke lightweight alloy wheels.
2014 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype PS1
Offered with 16,348 kilometers, PS1 is powered by the definitive 789 HP Type F140FE V-12 engine with prototype ancillaries and components in place, supplemented by Ferrari’s definitive preproduction HY-KERS hybrid powertrain system. Distinctively finished in Ferrari’s signature Rosso Corso with Matte Black, the body of PS1 is based upon Ferrari’s definitive, competition-style carbon fiber chassis and central “tub” structure. Accented by white vinyl roundels and Pirelli graphics, PS1 importantly features the definitive preproduction suite of active aerodynamic systems with prototype parts. The passenger cabin features red leather seats with black piping, complemented by carbon fiber accents on the dash and center console. Staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels mount huge Pirelli P-Zero extreme-performance tires.
2012 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype MP1
Based upon a preproduction chassis and central “tub” in technical carbon fiber, the prototype drivetrain of MP1 was based on the final layout arrived at by Ferrari’s engineers for LaFerrari. Power is delivered by the Type F140FD second-generation V-12 LaFerrari engine and prototype hybrid HY-KERS (Hybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery) system, cradled within MP1’s prototype engine-bay layout. In addition to the massive performance potential of the LaFerrari’s 6.3L/789 HP, DOHC, 48-valve V-12 engine, the oil-cooled electric motor resides at the rear of the LaFerrari’s 7-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission and, in production form, delivers an additional 161 HP with a low-mounted, liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery pack storing electrical power and serving as a stressed structural member. Electronic controls activate the electric motor, providing a turbo-like boost effect for nearly instantaneous throttle response.
2011 Ferrari LaFerrari Prototype M4
M4 served as a development prototype from 2011 to 2012 for mechanical components and, in particular, for all emissions parameters, which was essential for eventual road homologation of the production LaFerrari. Special bodywork and Matte Black paint accommodated the LaFerrari technical package while confusing watchful spy photographers during the test cycle. Interesting features include a custom front valance and air inlets, plus Scuderia Ferrari front-fender shields, white vinyl roundels and Pirelli graphics, with the interior equipped with black leather seats and carbon fiber dash trim. A thrilling offering, this early first-phase development prototype offers an incredibly rare glimpse into the art of automotive engineering that brought the LaFerrari—translated as “The Ferrari”—to the world.
