Mercedes wants to shock the performance world with its first purpose-built AMG EV.
Mercedes-AMG has a cemented reputation for combining luxury and performance to create some of the most enticing cars enthusiasts have ever seen, whether those are large luxury sedans with serious brawn under the hood, long, sweeping grand touring coupes with brash exhaust notes, or off-road-ready SUVs with a generous side of Mercedes-AMG glitz. Recently, AMG entered a new realm by creating its first all-electric vehicles, using Mercedes-Benz’s EQ vehicles as the basis, but it’s ready to take that a step further.
Luxury performance electric vehicles are cropping up throughout the market at an incredible pace. The Porsche Taycan has been refreshed, with a new Turbo GT variant meant for racetrack domination. Meanwhile, Lotus has unveiled the Emeya, Audi boasts the RS e-tron GT, and Cadillac has teased the Opulent Velocity concept, which aims to preview an all-electric future for its performance-oriented V-Series.
Two years ago, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the Vision AMG, a concept car meant to preview the future of all-electric AMG high-performance vehicles, and with it, Mercedes-Benz announced its intentions to develop the AMG.EA architecture, which would serve as the basis for all-electric dedicated AMG models. Two years later, that very AMG.EA architecture is well on its way towards coming to fruition.
Mercedes-Benz has announced that the first dedicated AMG electric vehicle with the AMG.EA platform is currently undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden. Currently, the AMG.EA platform and its inaugural car are still at the beginning stages of a long and strenuous testing period, but this announcement means a major stride has been made in AMG’s approach to automotive performance. The AMG.EA platform uses axial flux technology, which offers an impressive balance of power and weight, in conjunction with a powerful battery to make for a formidable performance car, which we will hopefully see outside its camouflage soon.
