Over two years on from first revealing its bid, Cadillac is officially joining the Formula 1 grid. Cadillac Formula 1 Team, backed by TWG Motorsports and General Motors, has received final approval from the FIA and Formula One Management to compete in the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship.
With this announcement, Cadillac becomes the latest manufacturer to enter Formula 1, bringing a uniquely American presence to the pinnacle of motorsport. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating: “The FIA Formula One Championship’s expansion to an 11th team in 2026 is a milestone. GM and Cadillac bring fresh energy, aligning with the FIA’s 2026 regulations and ushering in an exciting era for the sport.”
This decision marks a transformative moment, as Cadillac will compete against the world’s best teams, utilizing its engineering excellence, cutting-edge technology, and deep motorsports heritage to make an impact in F1.
The partnership between TWG Motorsports, which started out led by Michael Andretti, and General Motors forms a powerful combination of resources, expertise, and commitment to performance. TWG Group’s extensive motorsport experience, combined with GM’s legendary engineering and success in racing, provides a solid foundation for the team’s Formula 1 debut.
“For the past year, we have worked hand in hand with GM to lay a robust foundation for an extraordinary Formula 1 entry,” said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports. “Now, with 2026 in our sights, we’re accelerating our efforts—expanding facilities, refining cutting-edge technologies, and continuing to assemble top-tier talent.”
GM President Mark Reuss expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “We’re thrilled the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is official. We’re incredibly grateful for the support from the FIA and Formula One Management leadership, and for our collaboration with TWG. The excitement only grows as we get closer to showcasing GM’s engineering expertise on the prestigious global stage of F1.”
The Cadillac Formula 1 Team has appointed former Virgin and Marussia boss Graeme Lowdon as Team Principal, bringing extensive experience from past Formula 1 and motorsport leadership roles. Additionally, Russ O’Blenes has been named CEO of TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC, a new division focused on developing GM’s Formula 1 hybrid V6 power unit for the 2026 season.
“We have never lost pace in our planning or belief in this mission,” Lowdon stated. “We can’t wait to go racing and give fans a new team to cheer for.”
O’Blenes added: “Our power unit development is progressing rapidly. As we continue to hire top-tier engineering talent, we look forward to running our first V6 in the near future.”
Since announcing its bid to join Formula 1 in January 2023, TWG Motorsports has assembled a team of over 300 engineers and specialists working on aerodynamics, chassis development, simulation, and powertrain technology.
The team operates out of key locations, namely:
· Indianapolis, Indiana – Engineering & powertrain development
· Charlotte, North Carolina – Operations hub
· Warren, Michigan – GM Performance technology center
· Silverstone, England – F1 aerodynamic research & testing
With wind tunnel models, component production, and performance simulations well underway, Cadillac is on track to make a competitive debut in 2026.
As Formula 1 enters a new era with sustainable fuel regulations and advanced hybrid technology, Cadillac’s entry marks a significant step in American motorsports history. With a focus on innovation, performance, and global competition, the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is set to shake up the grid when the lights go out in March 2026.
