Almost as diverse as the automotive world itself, is the community of collectors and enthusiasts around the world who share the same fuel-driven passion for iconic sports cars. Bonding over the common denominator that is finely-tuned German engineering, Porsche purists come from all walks of life and often hold their own stories of how they became car crazy for the legendary 911. On the newest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, Jay spends some quality time with John Lewin and his incredible 1969 Porsche 911S. John not only stands out as a Porsche fanatic but also a star Prosecutor in HBO’s Emmy award-winning true crime series “The Jinx.”
The 1969 Porsche 911S was originally ordered new by Jim’s father and has stayed within the family after being passed down, making a true family heirloom for the Lewins. Ordered in a PTS (Paint-to-Sample) Midnight Blue finish from Stuttgart, Jim had the original color changed to silver as part of a ground-up restoration that further preserved its status as a collector-grade example. The interior also underwent a tasteful transformation, featuring a modernized cabin fitted with burgundy leather comfort seats. Pumping out extra power thanks to a 3.0L engine swap done in 1992, Jim’s 911 also housed a mechanically injected 2.0L and 2.7L in the past.
Jay and John enjoyed a spirited drive through sunny California, where the 911’s upgraded 930 suspension and braking components showcased their talents. As a custom Porsche upgraded to fit the needs of Jim and his driving style, Jay Leno best describes the Porsche 911 S as a “Singer on a budget” as he revs through the gears.
