Acura Announces New Adventure-Ready SUV For 2028
At this year’s Monterey Car Week, Acura unveiled the NEXERA Vision Concept, a sleek coupe with butterfly doors that envisions the near future of the iconic luxury marque’s design. With features like an illuminated “A” emblem and “Phantom Lighting,” the NEXERA reportedly features cues that will be seen in production, specifically in the form of Acura’s upcoming hybrid RDX, set to come to market in 2028. However, when Acura shared a business roadmap for North America with its dealers recently, the manufacturer announced that the hybrid RDX is only one of three upcoming models from Acura. Made for segments in which Acura does not currently compete, the new models will expand Acura’s reach and hopefully garner new customers as the brand celebrates its 40th anniversary since its 1986 establishment. The upcoming hybrid Acura RDX will be the first production model to feature Acura’s acclaimed two-motor hybrid technology, as well as some of the design cues showcased on the NEXERA. Joining it, however, will be an adventure-ready SUV model, which is set to arrive in the first part of 2028. Combining the capability and practicality for outdoor adventures with premium styling, materials, and technology, the new adventuring SUV will expand Acura’s portfolio to accommodate active customers who also want the qualities Acura’s lineup is known for offering. Along with that, an 8-passenger Acura SUV is in development, which will be the largest Acura SUV yet, above the 7-passenger MDX. The trio of new SUV models expands Acura’s SUV lineup significantly and continues a legacy that began with the SLX, Acura’s first SUV, which was based on the late ‘90s Isuzu Trooper. The SLX was replaced in 2001 by the MDX, which remains in Acura’s lineup today. These new models will join the MDX, as well as the entry-level ADX and Integra. With its bolstered lineup, Acura will be able to meet a range of needs and life stages, and the brand is also developing a new V6 hybrid powertrain for its D-Segment models, combining sporty performance with efficiency and towing capacity. About the upcoming three models, American Honda President and CEO Eiji Fujimura commented, “We are making a big commitment to Acura by delivering products and services that meet the needs of our customers at all life stages, which will create a sustainable long-term direction for the brand.” With three new SUVs: a hybrid RDX, an adventure-ready model, and Acura’s largest SUV yet, the 40-year-old luxury marque has an exciting near future.
