Vote: Pick the Winning Shot from the Phase One Light Pain...
After careful editing and dozens of photoshopped layers, the participants of the inaugural duPont REGISTRY automotive photography workshop have completed their process of clear bonnet protection, and they are ready for you to choose your favorite one.
In January, the invitation was extended to photographers around the country to join us at our headquarters and take advantage of the opportunity to learn a new piece of equipment and a new lighting technique. Phase One shared a few of their IQ250 Camera Systems for the afternoon, allowing each photographer access to a camera with the widest usable ISO range of any high-end camera, capable of anything from 100 ISO to 6,400. Priced between $35,000 and $40,000, the IQ250 System is a powerful one to have your hands on.
When the ability of that camera is combined with Chris Garrison's techniques, the final results are going to be undeniably impressive. Garrison demonstrated a light painting technique during the workshop, which combines long exposures with a Westcott Ice Light to highlight individual portions of the car. Dozens to hundreds of these photos are taken, and then combined in Photoshop to create one stunning final image.
Each of the photographers tried their hand at Garrison's technique with Phase One's camera, with a beautiful, lime green, 2015 McLaren 650S, courtesy of Dimmitt Automotive Group, as their subject. "From the second I read what the event would consist of I instantly knew it was something that would be a great self investment. I was overall excited to have the chance to learn more about the commercial photography side of the industry and how major publications like duPont REGISTRY pick what images go into the magazine. All of the other stuff was just an added bonus. Using the Phase One was a first for me and adding in Chris Garrison to show us how to use it was amazing."

"Starting off with Cars & Coffee the morning of the workshop primed me for what was to come later that day. Heading over to Dimmitt Auto to pick up our McLaren 650S and to shoot inside and outside the showroom with the Phase One camera was awesome. As if things couldn't get better, I had the opportunity to ride shotgun in the McLaren back to duPont Headquarters. The workshop itself finished our day off right!"

"Overall it was an informative workshop. Though it didn't play out exactly as advertised I came away with knowledge of a technique I hadn't tried before. I have been shooting cars for several years and light painting didn't seem to have a place in my style. I have been shooting mostly collector cars and classics as they lend themselves well to a studio environment. Now, with the light painting technique I intend to photograph supercars and exotics. This lighting technique really brings out the sharp angles typically found on those cars."
